Personally i would think it should be checked by default. I myself don't need to use the sidebar once every 10 second

not horrible, but I preferred the previous design

just upgraded my gmail as well, and there the changes are much more annoying, had to actually use a theme to tune down all the irrelevant colors the default has

turned off the left navigation, and have to agree with @fuxia, no way 99% of the users will even know it is possible and find where to do it. bad UX

@MarkKaplun I actually switched to HTML view on gmail, either using it on outlook or HTML version

There's a theory of designers getting lazier and less intuitive over time
