sarcasm master here, but as the article points out the problem is first with the UI (as actually many tech human interaction problems are) If you flag bad questions and answers only to moderators instead of flagging it to the OP you get a disconnect
OTOH fighting the sense of entitlement is an uphill endless battle. You can for example force comment on downvotes, but as someone that does it alot, I will be the first to acknowledge that it just leads to many pointless arguments
@TomJNowell API is a contract. Can you imagine your landlord changing a rent contract just by himself without notifying in any way the renter?
some changes are minimal and might be considered cosmetic, which is not what pento wants to do (add a field indicating if content is gutenberg), but regardless it is the state of mind that do not get the contractual obligations of an API that prevents me to even bother commenting on that issue
... it is unsurprisingly that not only pento do not get it

Very productive day so far ;) found a description for all the americans that think that GDPR will have zero impact on them - They are living the trump dream.

Morning. Having problem with a backend where load-scripts.php fails (when editing a post). The request made has 3 load[]= parts, if I request each of those individually it works. Is there a simple way I can have WP split this into 3 separate requests?
ah, define( 'CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false ); should work, will try it
worked

@MarkKaplun all the more reason to raise the point

tom
do you get benefits at your job
like health care

@MichaelEcklund when you say benefits, that depends on the country

paid time off
health, vision, dental?

e.g. I get private healthcare, but as a UK national it's not the same as what the US employees get what with the NHS

retirement investments?

1:51 PM
and everybody in the UK gets paid time off, statutory requirement of 20 days + 8 bank holidays
and we get pension etc

okay so does automattic provide anything other than an income to you?

though again, all UK employers are required to have one unless you explicitly opt out
sure, coworking expenses, computer, WordCamp travel, swag, etc etc

my main thing I need is healthcare

you seen the embroidered timbuktu bags with the WP logo on them?

if I can get that I'd love to apply there

1:53 PM
healthcare wouldn't be an issue
I say apply

what's a good starting point

how do you mean?

I'm not super advanced, but i'm also not a newb
like what position would be a good place to apply for

well have a look through the different roles listed, not all are technical, plenty of variety

I wanna code
I like writing code

1:54 PM
I can only comment so much from a VIP side of things though as far as roles are concerned

What do you do in VIP
You write custom code for people's websites?

I'm a Launch Engineer

VIP doesn't build websites for clients, we host them

1:56 PM
the clients get an agency or one of our vetted FP's to build it for them

do you use GCE?

if we write code, it's usually tools or examples
I don't know what GCE is

Google Cloud Enterprise

nope, Automattic has its own servers
Systems does the whole installing servers in racks and running stuff in data centres shebang
much cheaper at our scale than going with AWS or GCE

I suppose.

1:59 PM
VIP-wise, I'd suggest if you wanted to go hardcore on writing code, apply for the Platform Engineer position, they're doing a lot of stuff with React/JS/Node/PHP and a little Go
else, the Expert Debugger role might be better

What about a Code Wrangler?

it's essentially VIP Engineer Lite, for those who aren't quite at that level but are expected to be given a little training
Technically I'm a code wrangler

oh okay so if I apply to be a Code Wrangler, I might end up in VIP?

but Code Wrangler is more of an Automattic role than a VIP role
vip.wordpress.com/careers are the VIP positions

oh you're specific to WordPress

2:01 PM
we've a separate hiring funnel and more autonomy than Automattic in general
not 100%, we do host the odd Node based site, and we've a lot of tooling and infrastructure that isn't WP

I wanna get in on writing code like plugins
maybe jetpack or woocommerce

but the focus is towards enterprise clients running WP at VIP
then an Automattic role would be better, and you'd mention you're particularly interested in those in the covering letter

I should just apply as a code wrangler on automattic?
I don't really mind what I do.
I just like to write code and improve wordpress

Yeah, there's a lot of teams a code wrangler could end up on, you can help guide that with what you say when you apply and afterwards during interviews and trials

can I see your resume? would you mind sharing or is it kinda secret

2:04 PM
hah it's public on my site but I don't really update it

oh is it? that's a good idea

but tbh Automattic doesn't care much about it, more of a formality, the covering letter and community contributions massively outweigh it

I've been self empoyed since 19

I've not touched the bits past employment history in a few years, they could do with being rewritten

wow that format is different than i've seen
What should I do about references, if I've been self employed
Clients?

2:06 PM
I don't know, but I would guess so
or other people you worked on joint projects with
but that's a somewhat general UK style CV/Resume
only time my references have ever been checked was when CFTP worked with the Scottish government, and we needed clearance for handling childrens data

ahh
You've got a very nice resume in my opinion
very solid

2:21 PM
I'm doing it Tom
made up my mind.
This is what I want

2 hours later…
4:11 PM
good luck man!

3 hours later…
7:35 PM
I wish more people would explain why they're asking something
