@userabuser Don't you want to get a real avatar?

12:54 AM
@kaiser is there a filter for that?

@userabuser Yeah: pre_get_pattern_out_of_my_face
;)

hehe
ive been thinking about it anyway

Makes it more personal.
@userabuser You good with JS?

1:18 AM
depends on the time of day.. we have a love hate relationship - whats your prob

Hehe. Me too.

hehe its like that.. although i just accepted a complex JS project.. :( I need to learn to say no.. I always put myself under pressure lol.. sometimes best way to learn though

I'm loading a png img i generate from a canvas element (bitmap). This gets then gets loaded inside a div #preview, by the click of a button onClick="trigger_function();", so it's then inside $( '#preview' ).children( 'img' );. Point is that I see the img on the viewport and with the console log, but I get an empty element, when I try to console.log it directly. It seems to be too fast, so I can't grap it, as it's then not ready loaded. Q: How would I wait until the img is loaded?
<button onClick="trigger_fn();" />
<div id="preview">
    <img src="~/whatever.png" /> <!-- This gets loaded by onClick function -->
</div>

can i see your full snippet pls?
and functions

Hm. That's a lot. 3 JS functions + mark up file + ajax.php file
Really want to see all?

1:23 AM
would help to deduce
...so you cant cosole.log it right?

I can console.log( jQuery( '#preview' ) );
Then I see:
<div id="preview">
    <img id="preview-img" src="http://example.com/export/test_2012-04-24.032445.png">
</div>
But console.log( jQuery( '#preview img' ) ); or console.log( jQuery( '#preview-img' ) ); gives me an empty []...
So my guess is that the log still listens to the #preview container and appends the img on the fly, but can't directly look it up. Conclusion: I need to somehow wait until the element with the #preview-img ID is loaded into DOM. But I dunno how.

yeah it doesnt know of its existence
but just quickly... is there a purpose to you wanting to console this?
im talking about from a client/server perspective now

Answer is: No, I don't need it... I drop it into a blanket window, force a SaveAs and imediately close the win again. But it tells me undefined. Therefore I know that not only the log doesn't know, but also the DOM.
Point is that I can see the image loaded in DOM.

can you show me the url? just so i can debug on the fly

Currently have it only locally... Server version is stable :) Maybe tomorrow/later? Would highly appreciate some help on this.

1:38 AM
Yeah np
its definitely tied to the ajax here

thanks :)
Btw: Not even the following works.
	self.app.requested_img.onreadystatechange = function()
	{
		if ( app.requested_img.readyState == 4 )
		{
			if ( app.requested_img.status == 200 )
			{
console.log( jQuery( '#preview-img' ) );
			}
		}
	};

I think we need to be looking at: .ajaxComplete( handler(event, XMLHttpRequest, ajaxOptions) )
because thats what gets returned on an ajax request

Yeah, I guess I need to remodle this to use jQuery ajax.
↑ guess this will solve the problem, when it's integrated in the overall jQ concept.

mm
$('#preview').ajaxComplete(function(event, XmlHttpRequest, ajaxOptions){
console.log(event);
console.log(XmlHttpRequest);
console.log(ajaxOptions);
}

@userabuser This doesn't work. The request isn't there and I will first have to remodle it, but I'm out for today. Dead :)

1:52 AM
k.. same.. pick up later

thanks so far :)

np all good
im off, cya

Weird! his wordpress.com theme has font issues in IE9 - reddledemo.wordpress.com
In IE9, it shows 'serif' while others show 'sans-serif'

@toscho Entschuldigung. Ich bin an der falschen Stelle wieder!
No, actually, I'm confused. Just forget it.

We’re less than a week away from the Meetup day (April 28), so if you haven’t already secured a venue, it’s important to get that done. Several people ha …

he is not technically wrong, but he makes case for thing that is completely not normal practice

@TomJNowell hm? fixed what?

before: a horrific example advocating flushing rewrite rules on the init hook

yeah, looked at history... not my area :)

after: 3 examples, plug, theme activation and when it detects a file has changed, with warnings and clarification
hmmm who is the honey badger?

9:45 AM
@TomJNowell you mean who is really behind it? don't know :)

@Rarst any site?

he sounds like Otto or someone being sarcastic about Otto, but that might just be my Otto-phobia...

half a night of emails later it seems I set up myself with Query Posts to compete against core project and get crushed :) will be fun...

LOL, my blog got called bloated in batshit crazy comment... had that guy like seen Internet? :)
> This blog is an example of the worst of the Net in this category. More bloat here than any Windows OS. [...] You criticize some designer’s driver to make it sound like you build much better ones, but we all know that you never design anything, except sour, depressing rants in your posts. [...] What a waste of blog. This is not a personal attack...
I am genuinely puzzled if I should let the comment through. It's hilarious, but it's also pretty much worthless

Fatal error: Class 'WP_Query' not found in C:\xampp\htdocs\cah-new\wp-content\themes\carandhalf\includes\getpost.php on line 14
what can be the error.......... any ideas

@SolomonHenry Your blog is bloated.

@SolomonHenry Chat is for fun. Ask questions on the main site!

ok
@kaiser what do you mean by bloated?

@Rarst you made up that description by yourself, or you found it somewhere...

Q: Quotes not working properly

kaiserAs we got a lot of error messages like in this Q, I see the need to wrap them up in quotes (we're quoting what the server says). am i irritating all you people here with my questions :P

@SolomonHenry somewhat

10:14 AM
@kaiser Why the spoiler?

@toscho Sry. Will learn to behave appropriate.

@Rarst im new to WP and its been 4mnths and im struggling, i thought i can get some help from you guys....

WP.com official themes aren't tested seriously on Windows (especially IE). Does anyone agree?

@SolomonHenry [private] As you've seen with my quote: Don' t mess with toscho. Btw: If you type [private] at the beginning of your Q no one else than the one you're replying to can read it.

@geekpanth3r i guess they are 1st tested in chrome.....

10:18 AM
@SolomonHenry why would you say that?

@kaiser Wrong. :P

this theme has font issues on IE9 for example : reddledemo.wordpress.com
And it makes me wonder how well they test their themes across browsers &/or platforms.

@kaiser today i saw that private reply thing.... and it makes sense...

@SolomonHenry we are not here (in this chat) to educate. we can help with question that are interesting when we feel like it.
rest of the time - there is that main site that is meant for questions to be asked

@Rarst ok, i'll keep that in mind
@geekpanth3r just guessed it, maybe browser compatibility

10:22 AM
hmm..
Anyone ever used Google Web fonts here? What's your choice? <link> tag or JS?

@geekpanth3r yeah i used google web fonts once.....

WordPress is so much nicer with APC...

My blog once seemed bloated with W3TC, APC, Memcached, Varnish -- everything I knew/heard about caching was enabled (on a VPS). Just imagine!

I need to figure out Varnish next for new VPS... switching to nginx feels like too much to deal with right now

Varnish works great -- except that it can cache SSL and wp-admin pages if not setup properly

10:30 AM
I know, I have several bookmarks on Varnish config for WP... just need to carve some time to go through and get it done on VPS

fun time, then :)

@Rarst document document document

@TomJNowell I will be just repeating what smarter and better skilled people did... nothing to document :)

10:56 AM
@toscho Q to U: @import or @font-face?
(keeping cross-browser compatibility in mind)

@geekpanth3r Both are very different. What's your use case?

for displaying web fonts

In general: Don't use @import.

okay

@geekpanth3r @import doesn't load web fonts, it loads other style sheets.

10:58 AM
yeah, yeah...stupid question
Now the options are @font-face or JavaScript
@font-face is okay, right?

@geekpanth3r Syntactically: yes. It still hurts performance and interoperability.

I also read that some older browsers (like older versions of Opera) dont load @import CSS as they pretty much consider it like JS
> It still hurts performance and interoperability.

@geekpanth3r No, that's wrong.

It definitely hurts perf. because it has to download that font file

it's an extra step and request

11:01 AM
@geekpanth3r r u trying to use Google Web Fonts with WordPress

yes
@toscho But how does it hurt interoperability?

Every browser loads @imported files.

@geekpanth3r If your visitors use Google Translate to read your site, the style sheets and the fonts are loaded too. But your fonts may not offer all the needed glyphs. Result: mixed fonts, garbage in the worst case.

I am only using the fonts for headings -- which most probably won't have out-of-ordinary symbols

11:03 AM
@geekpanth3r Try a Polish translation.

Oh... you meant, that! Hmm... I understand
Is Droid Serif fine? That's what I am going to use
It's a Standard font on Linux boxes

@geekpanth3r im not sure but, when i used the example i gave you, the whole site turned on to that font, anyways try once

Thanks for all your help yesterday, in the end, I went back to basics: wordpress.stackexchange.com/a/50060/1341

Droid serif has a lot of glyphs and some fallback fonts. It is probably one the best choices for extra fonts. But there is no font with all possible glyphs. :)

@toscho Of course. So, finally -- @font-face or async JavaScript to load the font?
(IMO @font-face is better)
@SolomonHenry Yes, I will try it now, and let you know :)

11:07 AM
@geekpanth3r Asynchronous scripts will produce a flush of content when the browser has to re-render the whole page.

hmm...

@geekpanth3r sure.. :)

So, the road ends here ----> @font-face
Trying it out....

Extra fonts and performance just don't fit together.

@toscho It's just two 16KB files. Say, like 2 images. And I don't think the browser needs lots of processing power to render them

11:10 AM
@geekpanth3r 16 KiB? That's not Droid.

Wait let me see
Oops, that was some other file. It's 40 and 43KB
Still, 2 images :)
and they aren't loaded again (browser cache).

DroidSerif-Regular.ttf: 172.916 KiB uncompressed

@toscho Mine's woff
I got it straight from Google's font repo man

@geekpanth3r Still: You get it never compressed that much with subsetting.

hmm... let me see one more time
Only latin characters in there. So, is that what makes the diifference?

11:16 AM
@font-face Kit: Droid Serif. The regular cut weights 71 KiB.

these version control and linux things drag me back into DOS times... so much command line... :)

@toscho Let me show you

@geekpanth3r No time for tests. I feel guilty already for chatting. :)

test? No. It's a 40KB file. I just wanted to show you that it's 40KB.
Anyway. I will carry on with my tests. Thanks for the help. :)

@geekpanth3r A 40 KiB file of Droid Serif is incomplete. I don't even need to look into the file to know that.

11:21 AM
okay... I will get it elsewhere then

the only place you should be grabbing a font like droid serif
is direct from the source
also
have you tried downloading the fonts from gogoles font repo?
you can grab the OTF/TTF versions for use in photoshop/word/etc
googles*

@TomJNowell That's where I got it from
The ttf files are around 45KB, while Woff files are around 26 KB each

reminder to self: read further up the page

@TomJNowell :)

keep in mind google lets you choose what typefaces/styles/weights of the font
and what characters
the TTF download will be the whole font
your WOFF may be a compressed bold/italic only version with only the latin character set
aka no cyrillics etc

11:29 AM
As for droid serif, I am only able to select latin chars

Don't expect Klingon to render well
You're using it for a big header yes?

@TomJNowell that's right
@TomJNowell No. Headlines of posts
I don't like georgia

well don't bother doing it for body text if you can get away with that

No way. There's Arial for that.

not all browsers like webfonts as much as the other, Chrome can be horrible sometimes rendering them at small sizes
Big and beautiful is the way to go
or if you follow Zeldman, HUGE

11:31 AM
Hey guys

hmm... Yeah. That's why -- only headings
@TomJNowell Didn't understand

@geekpanth3r look at Zeldmans site
he redesigned recently

any wordpress guru care to take a look at this : wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/49578/… please :}

his new mantra is big and bold

@TomJNowell one moment
lol... that size doesnt work -- at least not always, not mine -- archive.whatthenerd.com

11:33 AM
@AyazMalik you don't need ot use the caching facility of W3 total cache
just use the CDN bit and turn everything else off
eitherway
if your host cannot support W3 total cache or supercache
then you've got a pretty bad host
or you're paying $1 a month

@AyazMalik This plugin should help, IMO: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-regex
@TomJNowell probably true.

@AyazMalik who is your server host?

11:50 AM
@toscho Polish translation: translate.google.com/…
@SolomonHenry Here you go. I just enabled web font for post titles: archive.whatthenerd.com

@geekpanth3r way to go.... :) cool

@geekpanth3r Try Vietnamese. I get mixed fonts here.

@SolomonHenry Now my titles look neater on Windows too
@toscho You mean, "GitHub" "Powered"?

i am with vps.net, cdn of maxcdn

@geekpanth3r Hm? That's a screenshot of your web site.

11:56 AM
lol no im paying 150$ per month,, a pretty good host but recently something went wrong :{

@toscho But what's wrong in there?

@AyazMalik ah so it's a misconfigured server

@geekpanth3r A mix of serif and sans-serif fonts.

guess so, been paying them for on demand tickets.. still no luck in fixing that

@toscho I am only using sans-serif in titles :)
Oh, oops!

11:58 AM
@geekpanth3r Wrong.

@geekpanth3r the best thing with these Google web fonts, is that you don't have to worry about whether the fonts are residing in user's PC or not

@toscho sorry, I should have said serif
And yes, I see sans-serif now

@geekpanth3r Wrong too. :)

But it fit in nicely!

so till this issue isn't fixed im trying to find a function or something to write the content image urls to cdn urls

11:59 AM
@toscho isn't that what you meant?

yes

So, yeah, that's a problem, but it doesn't look all too horrible. And it took me sometime to realize that there are some sans-serif chars. :P I will see if I can do something about it though
...off I go. Gotta take him for a walk. :)

@AyazMalik why does W3 not work? Have you reported this to the W3 total cache people?

@AyazMalik After reading over all your Qs - to be honest: Your setup is completely wracked. You got plugin that's not using real shortcodes, but linking images through str_replace or whatever in your one Q. Than, in another Q, you want your post permalinks rewritten. And in a third Q, you want all image URls rewritten to point to a CDN. You have 3 problems and trying to solve all in parallel steps instead of actually planing what you want to achieve. You'll likely hit a wall (or two).
That's a collision for shure.

12:15 PM
My house doesn't have window frames, how can I get this cookie dough to hold the windows in place
thats the kind of question you're asking
don't ask how to patch things over
ask how to fix the core problem, that your server is misconfigured
else you'll have another problem tomorrow, and another and another
and when your server is finally fixed, you'll be left with a slow hackish website
@AyazMalik case in point, nowhere have you asked why your W3 total cache is broken, or what's wrong with your VPS and how to fix it

@kaiser 6pts away from the ability to do that. :P after offering a bounty

@kaiser started 5 years ago!

From a brief look, you'd have to include include( admin_url().'load-scripts.php' ); and include( admin_url().'script-loader.php' );. Then jump into $GLOBALS['wp_scripts'] and use $wp_scripts->default_dirs( array_merge( $wp_scripts->default_dirs, array( '/themes/your_theme/js/' ) ); to extend it. But I guess this will only work if you use a plugin or mu-plugin.
And then use $wp_scripts->add( $handle, $path_from_content_dir, false/array( $deps ), $ver ) to add a script. Uncompressed scripts get searched by .dev (before .js ext). Same seems to be possible for $wp_styles.
@All Anyone ever tried this ↑ ?

1:30 PM
eurgh people using direct URLs to theme files for AJAX
it seems nobody is aware of the WP AJAX apis
this needs fixing!

jetbrains.com/phpstorm/whatsnew it's here it's here it's here

@TomJNowell thanks

Does EP_TAGS and EP_CATEGORIES work for anybody? All the rest of the EP_* seem to work, but those two :S

@kaiser There is a good plugin for that already

@Brady BWP Minify?

1:44 PM
yeah but I dont use it
their latest version they broke something

@Brady Works fine for me

Try using wp_localize_script()
broken^^
I reported the duplication problem:
`Fixed wp_localize_script duplication issue`
but when they fixed it they fixed it too well :)

Hm. My ajax contact form from contact form 7 works.

fixed it to a point it doesn't show at all

↑ what a sentence :)
Only one of the jQuery functions doesn't work anymore

1:47 PM
@Brady I know its author. He told me that it only works if the styles and scripts loaded by plugins are enqueued properly.

No success msg anymore and people are now sending me mail over and over :/

@geekpanth3r they are loaded properly... Who do you think I am :P

@geekpanth3r And you think @Brady wouldn't do that? :)

@Brady :P hehe!

There is my second post reporting the problem
@geekpanth3r I should give you a slap for that ;)

1:51 PM
@Brady I can take one ;)

@Brady Completely forgot about you - need help with a jQuery DOM issue

@kaiser say what?

@Brady I'm writing from canvas » PNG
Saving the file to the server (works)

@kaiser I've never played with canvas so I cannot be of much use

by the click of a button
@Brady That's not the point. Just illustrating the situation.
Then I add it to the page for testing (new element inside a div)

1:54 PM
Give me a few mins. Ive been at a meeting all morning doing WP training and Ive just got in and need time to reply to emails

@Brady n/p.

2:13 PM
^^ generate you own shitty theme ;)

Guess I'll click together some for Themeforest ;)
@Brady "Option to save generated themes for later: Yes (but can't download)" HAHAHA
free plan

I know. I didnt say you could download

Understood. But kind of funny to call that a free plan

@Brady lol!
@Brady Actually, looks like it's useful -- especially to those like me, who don't know that it actually creates shitty themes ;)

@geekpanth3r Already started learning PHP?

2:24 PM
@kaiser yes a little -- so far that now I know if an error shows line n, I should mostly be looking at n-1
at least that's how I understood it

@geekpanth3r It can be anywhere before it. The line is just where it triggered. Anyway: Good that you started. Will keep this room a little more tidy and silent ;)

2:38 PM
Anyone of you is "Marcel A. Weder"?

@kaiser no

@toscho puh, thanks

Some people have problems I better not try to replicate …

2:52 PM
@toscho Example? - Here goes the "why" - or even worse?.

3:14 PM
I don't think I can ever get used to SX's web chat :/

@Wyck Why? What's wrong?

    public static function save_post( $post_id = false, $post = false )
    {
        if( 'logos' != $post->post_type )
            return $post_id;

        if ( defined( 'DOING_AUTOSAVE' ) && DOING_AUTOSAVE )
            return $post_id;

        if ( !current_user_can( 'edit_page', $post_id ) )
            return $post_id;
^^ am I right to return $post_id here?

@Brady its an action. You can just return

and later on after success should I still return $post_id;
@StephenHarris facepalm
ofcourse. Why was I thinking it was a filter...

@geekpanth3r Ive been using irc on and off for twenty years, it just seems wrong lol

3:18 PM
@Wyck :D

@Wyck hello

it's also seems to be some sort of crap .net proprietary system
@kaiser hi ok /rant over:)

Why can't we fav answers instead of Qs...

is this answer still sound?

A: Attaching media to custom posts without editor

Jan FabryAt the top of wp-admin/edit-form-advanced.php I see the following code that seems related to the media uploader: if ( post_type_supports($post_type, 'editor') || post_type_supports($post_type, 'thumbnail') ) { add_thickbox(); wp_enqueue_script('media-upload'); } You'll need to add thes...

@Brady should still work

yes it works but the position of the button is less than desirable

3:47 PM
@toscho The flow chart is flawed you can get stuck in an endless loop

@Brady As a mod you should know how common this is.

if you don't give up on the question and the OP doesn't do anything about it
You get stuck in a loop of nagging the OP
;)

If the OP doesn't improve the question I close it and wait what happens. :D

I know but I was being pedantic

4:05 PM
The 5 sec. limit for comment upvoting isn't 5sec.. more like 15

I thought save_post( $post_id = false, $post = false ) $post was set?

@kaiser I'm glad to know I just can't count.
*I'm glad to know it's not that I just can't count.

do_action('save_post', $post_id, $post);
^^ from core
in a number of places

@ericissocial it's feeling. I know as I already used the stop watch to measure

@kaiser Does the timer reset every time you think it's been 5 seconds and click?

4:25 PM
@ericissocial guess so

I guess that's a good way to punish impatience. It definitely makes you stop and think before you upvote multiple items on a single page.

@all what PHP function will break down a full file and path down to its elements
/path/to/file/filename.extension
I need to just get filename.extension

Couldn't you just explode it and get the array count -1?

@ericissocial nope
found it
@ericissocial the directory Separator could be diff E.G. C:\\Some\Path/wp-uploads/logos/

Good call, I forgot about that.

4:41 PM
@ericissocial I normally read through discussion, then rate up. For me it´s annoying
@Brady now got some brain for me? :)

4:59 PM
By the way: drive.google.com is LIVE
Looks like it's replacing Google Docs

=]
just tried it
it works every nicely
and a very nice UI too
they've also 'synced' google docs into it
my GDrive folder has a tonne of GDocs icons with extensions like .gsheet and .gdoc
but they're just textfiles with json objects
a URL and a resource ID
anyways works veyr nicely, good web UI, syncs dropbox style, but double the space, just need a linux and command line client now

It's not available on one of my Google Apps domains.
This makes me unhappy.

@kaiser I'm working overtime all this week at work to get through my workload
sure I can help you ;)
hit me from the top
@kaiser come on then... Time is money :)
