Taxis may not have worked right everywhere but back then I was able to get taxis near here. (Or maybe a bit longer ago, time goes fast.) Since they have deregulated the taxi market in the Netherlands you can not get a taxi booked ahead early in the morning, to catch an early train.
You can find a taxi from 60 km away at your local railway station but your local taxi company might be having their cars as far away, so no use calling the local company to come and pick you up from the station.
