@Shokhet Very interesting. And helpful to know.
One more question......
Do you see the gold square with an 8 on it?
When I click on this, all the queues are empty
So then what is it that I'm missing?
@Shokhet in return, for you Schengen question, it is not a complicated system. In theory it is geared to someone who has made it part way through secondary school
Only a small fraction of the Schengen questions you see in the 720 you found are the first level of complexity or beyond.
The overwhelming majority of questions are concerned with "Best Practices"
OK I take that back.
Best practices AND common sense
But the 563 questions you found are not duplicates
The UK, on the other hand, is a den of snakes

Q: Schengen Visa quetions

user28487I am planning a trip across Europe but I'm a bit sketchy on the details and would really appreciate some help with the following questions: 1) I have a temporary UK residency since I'm a student there and intend on applying at the French Embassy in the UK, however I will be travelling with my fo...

That question is 100% pure Best Practices + Common Sense

Q: UK general visit Visa refused for my Spouse

SaurabhI am currently in UK on ICT Tier 2 VISA for 6 months. My wife (housewife) applied for general visit Visa in March 2015, to join me and for tourism purpose for 4 months. She intended to leave Uk with me in July 2015. But her visa was rejected, here is the exact reason stated: "You intend to trave...

That question, on the other hand, is a misconceived application and OT for here...

Q: What is "employer letter" for Schengen when I'm in college?

pllOne of the requirements to apply for a Schengen visa to Germany from the US is reference letter from your employer I'm a student in a university. Do I just need a document confirming that I'm enrolled as a student? Or something more?

And this one is pure Best Practices
@Shokhet I do hope that's helpful

@GayotFow to Tehran? Fly. Then after that travel around to say, Shiraz, etc by train or bus
@GayotFow the gold square is the review queue with outstanding (to be completed) reviews, as is my understanding. I dislike it, but the idea is to show you that some are still to be reviewed by others - ie they're not "complete", regardless of whether it's you or someone else who reviews it. It bugs me too.

6:28 AM
@GayotFow @MarkMayo So that square is basically saying that other users are falling behind in their review tasks? :)
@GayotFow @Willeke You can always edit your own posts without needing approval regardless of reputation count. When it comes to editing other people's posts then @Shokhet is right: ≥ 2k users can edit posts without needing to be reviewed. ≥ 20k users can exit tags without needing to be reviewed.
Post and tag edits give you +2 rep. Tag edits can sometimes count as two edits if you change both excerpt and tag wiki.

@JoErNanO well, sort of ;)

Q: Where is the official Iranian Railways website?

Mark MayoThis sounds odd, but my friend and I are struggling to find the official site for Iranian Railways. Any google search we do takes us to: IranRail.net Which describes itself as the "UNOFFICIAL Homepage of Iranian Railways". Unofficial? OK, but then were is the official one? Or is there not one...

this is confusing me, or my google search is failing me badly this week :/

@andra remember Huis Ten Bosch in Japan?

@chx thanks, that's just weird tho! :/

Edits only give +2 rep points if you are under the review threshold
After that, your edits don't need to be reviewed, can be smaller than X chars but don't bring you any reputation

@Relaxed Exactly
@GayotFow Yes, it is; thanks! :)

Yes right. Should have said reviewed edits give +2 reputation.

@GayotFow @MarkMayo @JoErNanO About the review queue number:

Q: Notification for reviews shows way too much

MołotSince a recent change in notifications, I see more than I should: I see no reason to see 134 posts are awaiting review, when there is literally nothing I can do about them. I think it is a bug, because notification is meant as something that will make me act. When I know I usually can't, obvio...

I just got 10K on one site (and 2K on a beta at the same time) and that number bugs me also....I think there was a on MSE to change it at one point or another, but I can't find it at the moment.

@Shokhet Thanks for that.

No problem.
I think this question was the one I was looking for:
18
Q: Review Count - Fix It or Lose It

RainboltAnother meta question identified a bug that was marked as designed. To summarize the bug, the little number that appears next the Review link in the header shows an incorrect value most of the time. Wrong posts number on SO Review section I would like to propose that the feature be dropped...

11:40 AM
I had the same question when I got to 10k: what's the purpose of the mod tools? Purely informational is the answer. The boxed orange number reflects that.

@JoErNanO Right. The answer to the first question I posted says something similar
I have to go now

11:59 AM
@Shokhet good find

12:14 PM
39/40 tags have 200+ questions. C'mon, we just need 4 questions to complete the 40!
anyone got a bus question they've been dying to ask, now is the time! ;)

@Shokhet regarding visas, the travel site is consistent from top to bottom, front to back on visa refusals versus rejections. But new questions always have to be monitored to keep it that way.

he said the word (shudders in corner)

@MarkMayo Why are London's bendy busses hated so much by local councils?
HYPOTHETICALLY: If there were a 'best-practices' tag, about 99% of visa questions would be tagged like that. But 'best-practices' wouldn't work.

12:29 PM
@GayotFow probably not a travel question, more political ;)
Also because double deckers have a smaller road footprint = win
also the first time you're in the middle bendy bit when the bus turns? SO MUCH CONFUSION AND TERROR!

@MarkMayo @GayotFow People all around the world have been using bendy buses for ages. My bet is that the Rosbifs see them as a menace to their precious status quo double-deckers. If they're all converted to bendies then the city will lose its spirit.
Even though the Majour would secretly like to convert them all into boris bikes... :D
Plus nothing beats attempting to get down the stairs to the upper deck of a bus whilst the damn thing is taking a narrow bend. :D

Trying to go up and down stairs in a double decker London bus is absolutely terrifying
Like those Air Crash Investigation shows with bad turbulence

Q: Where can a tourist to Malta ride an articulated bus?

Gayot FowI was thinking a short break to Valletta might be enhanced by taking one of the 'bendy buses' that used to serve London. Is it possible to ride one of these? Or alternatively, are there any bus routes in London that are still served by bendy buses? If not, then where would I have to go to ri...

@JoErNanO bendy buses are of the devil ;)
ah yes, memories of trying to dismount a double decker after a night at the pub, while still moving, good times

1:11 PM
What the world really needs are articulated double-decker buses…
Also, two-levels tilting trains

@Relaxed And the stairs should be designed to be placed on the bendy part.
Just for kicks.

kicks, flips, and general in-motion flailing about...

Wikipedia is already on it, of course
An articulated bus (either a motor bus or trolleybus) is an articulated vehicle used in public transportation. It is usually a single-deck design, and comprises two rigid sections linked by a pivoting joint. This arrangement allows a longer legal overall length than single-decker rigid-bodied buses, and hence a higher passenger capacity, while still allowing the bus to maneuver adequately on the roads of its service route. Around the English-speaking world, articulated buses have acquired several different synonyms that allude to their articulated design, such as bendy buses, bending buses, tandem...
Apparently not very popular

So if the road footprint is smaller why not make that a quadruple-decker bus?

1:34 PM
that is so awesome

I have ;)

Just for you. :D

except you've lost the APril one, so at present your only hope is March, otherwise you'll be tie with someone ;)
and @chx isn't going to let you win the March one ;)

I know I know. No need to rub it in. :P
I answered two questions, by researching and writing proper answers and got 0 votes.

1:38 PM
bugger!

@JoErNanO Where???

Then I answered one using the first result from a quick google search and got plenty of votes.

I still have 11 votes to get rid of :(

A: Driving 12 passenger van in UK

JoErNanOIf I understand the question correctly, you are asking about the possibility of obtaining a D driving licence for buses with more than 8 passenger seats in the UK as a US citizen. Setting aside the fact that D and C licences are arguably the most difficult permits to obtain in terms of practical ...

A: Appropriate clothing for Pantanal in Brasil during the dry season

JoErNanOPantanal Temperature Excursion You are right in saying that July falls in the Pantanal dry season: the Pantanal has two seasons: a wet season from roughly October to March, and a dry season from April to September. Nevertheless you should keep in mind that dry does not necessary mean warm....

@GayotFow @MarkMayo And here I am begging for votes. :D

haha

1:39 PM
No jokes aside I couldn't find any interesting questions.
So I let go of april.

I is actually HARD to use up your votes

But it's ok I'll wear @chx out.
@GayotFow @MarkMayo You two are going to get me banned for vote-begging! :D

And sometimes I do something stupid like u/v a crap answer

/flags for mod
;)

@MarkMayo I think we should add a quality criteria to the answerathon. Something like if the question is closed becaus unfit for tse standards then the it doesn't count for the answerathon.

1:41 PM
I have

And @GayotFow you should participate in the answerathon.

oh wait, I did it for dupes
IF the question you answer is marked as a duplicate on the same 'day', your answer is invalidated.
I might adjust it to include 'put on hold'

@JoErNanO I am a poor candidate for that competition

Yup I read that. I would make it "closed"
regardless of the reason.

But just to make you guys aware.......
I am totally WINNING the image competition

1:42 PM
have added it
image competition?
like identify-this ones?
I'm totally still stoked about this answer on identifying an image

:D :D

@MarkMayo Yeah, eat my dust!

@GayotFow Write the rules down.

@JoErNanO good point! Where to write them?

I also wouldn't mind an event like 'upvote day' on the first of the month, where everyone posts in meta that they've spent all of their 40 votes that day on quality answers/questions they've not previously upvoted

1:45 PM
@MarkMayo You are limiting the close/hold window to the competition day because it would be hard to backtrack and remove answers once the day is closed, right?

it'd actually give us some more 'hot' questions ;)

@GayotFow Make it a meta post.

@JoErNanO yes, very.

Gather some feedback.
@MarkMayo I guessed so.

@JoErNanO in META everybody would d/v it

1:46 PM
@GayotFow I had a couple of posts about the answerathon idea before it became a thing. Community on meta was supportive so I went ahead. Other competitions would be considered too.
meta.travel, not the angry meta.SE ;)

I will try to compose something
I was going to raise a META thread complaining about conflict of interests.
It's something BAD

Oh I always vote down complaints ;)

You see :)

Kidddddiiiing! ;)

listen for a moment..........
If you answer a question......
then everybody has a right to compete for votes on it
most importantly the noobs

1:48 PM
sure...

because they are entry level members of the community
yeah, but there's conflict of interests angle!

you'll need to elaborate...

How so?

If you answer a question and then issue a CLOSE vote......
then the noobs are denied
the opportunity to compete with you!

I don't think it's a serious issue
I mean I hope people don't do that regularly, I have seen no sign of it

1:50 PM
If the noob has a better answer

the 'noobs' as you call them also can't review, can't edit and a bunch of other stuff. it's a pretty rare edge case.

And?

sure, you can issue a close vote AND answer, but that's very, very rare, why would someone do that?

Theoretically, you could do that, of course but is it happening?

I saw an instance and decided it was UNFAIR conflict of interests

1:51 PM
noobs do have less 'powers', but that's just a limitation of being a noob.

It has happened in the past.

and it still relies on 5 people voting to close it

Personally, I might have done it once or twice but only because I changed my mind on the question

People get passive rep on those questions

I must have done it too.

1:52 PM
and if the noob has posted an answer, they still get passive votes too

and noobs cannot compete with you because they blocked from answering

OTOH, it's indeed kind of annoying to have valid questions with valid answers that will remain forever (because they were upvoted) but stay closed
Kind of prevents the system from working effectively

well, not if it was validly closed...

But I think it has nothing to do with conflicts of interests, mostly with differing views on what's a good question and what's on topic
@MarkMayo yes, but it kinds of begs the question ;-)

If it's closed, there's an ethical onus to delete your answer :(

1:53 PM
it's a minor issue, but no more than say, not being able to see who downvoted you, or requiring a reason for a downvote

Minor or not......

sure, but there are bigger issues I'd prefer they fixed first
like that damn number on the review button ;)

If you answered a question then you should up vote it - quoting Mr Mayo :)

yep, not disagreeing with that

Also, reputation does matter, provides incentive and all that
But it's a means to an end

1:55 PM
@Relaxed Said the guy with 30k+. :P

Think about it for a while

The platform is not there to organize a perfectly fair contest with some high rewards
It's there to generate good content and push it to the top
@JoErNanO :-)
You know I used to be called “Annoyed” and registered to complain about what I considered a borderline racist comment?
Never thought I would stick around, let alone reach that level of reputation…

So when I see a CLOSE notice and one of the voters has an answer........
I will flag it
as conflict of interest

I have also been accused several times of being greedy!

:)

1:57 PM
When commenting on other answers and editing aggressively…
Whether you yourself voted to close a question or not, it takes at least 4 other votes
It's more common for me to have an upvoted answer on a closed question that I voted to keep open

it's...not...a conflict of interest
you can't tell if that close vote is from the person who answered

So no contradiction and no conflict of interest but the damage is the same: Question remains and annoys those that want it gone
But it cannot receive other answers like it should

The close notice says who voted
and the answers show who answered

Also, the whole thing favours those that spend the whole day checking the site and answer early

@GayotFow only once the whole thing is closed

2:02 PM
If you have a large reputation, you can hasten the process a bit by voting to close but you cannot answer after it has been closed

@MarkMayo indeed.
but noobs can answer a question with 4 close votes :)

So at the end of the day, it might just as well freeze some ‘noob’ answer

I'm sure in the past I've voted to close, then after a day it hasn't been closed and some comments have convinced me it might be answerable. So I answer it, and then it gets closed.

@MarkMayo if you answer and voted to close or the other way around........

well normally in that case I'll retract my close vote

2:04 PM
And a noob might think it's answerable also

What I often do is answer in comments if I think I can provide some useful feedback but the question does not belong on the site

but I'm sure I must have forgotten to do so at some point

We could do some query to get stats on this ;-)

@Relaxed this is great ethics
@Relaxed No need for stats, it's a community thing that helps noobs
totally voluntary

Well, I see a need for stats because if it only happens three or four time a year, it's not worth worrying about in my view

2:06 PM
regardless, it's such a small, small thing. If I was a noob and somehow miraculously noticed it, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't care.

you guys have lost your noob viewpoint :)

and even if we all decide 'THIS MUST BE FIXED' a debate and feature request would happen on meta.SE
not at all, I'm often a noob on other network sites

No need to fix it, you cannot fix it in the past
It's a consideration going forward

most recently philisophy and astronomy.SE

And it's only me who advocates it

2:07 PM
But how?

I'm such a noob there, I can't even spell philosophy!

You can flag it and then what?
A ban for the offending user?

No bans
It's voluntary

Not sure I follow

I think he's saying we should just smack on the wrist any 'offender'

2:09 PM
Mark said in META -> if you think it's worth answering, you should u/v the question

that's a different issue, you can still upvote the question and close vote it...

Either it's a deliberate strategy from some users to hog reputation (which I don't believe) but then appeals to behave nicely are not going to help
You need more than gentle reminders and meta discussions

I think it's easy to do that now - downvote the answer and leave a comment as to why you did it ;)

Or it's a mistake that only happens once in a while and there isn't much we can do about it either

and the corollary is -> if you think it's worth answering, then give the noobs a chance also

2:11 PM
well, great, if you find someone who has done it, then @ping them, or leave a comment
I think that's about the best we can do

@MarkMayo that's right, a ping for comment :)
I will not flag then. Just a comment

yep, that seems the most logical

This type of ethic would NEVER EVER work on the main site

Stackoverflow?

yes, the one where I stopped at 5k
5k is all I need for my professional credential
More than that is bad IMHO

3 entrants already. C'mon @GayotFow, you answer a question almost every day as it is!
And @Relaxed, time for your 3rd comp ;)
And don't think I don't see you there @RoryAlsop and @AnkurBanerjee ;)

@MarkMayo I added a notice about regulations in the title.

saw that, all good

@MarkMayo I will give it a lash

I just realised that the acronym UTC should be CUT. Apparently UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. I feel like I knew that, but never realised the letters were therefore sort of out of order.

CUT?
But it's UTC specifically to avoid either CUT or TUC

2:21 PM
It's UTC for me

Because what UTC actually stands for is “temps universel coordonné” of course

The French invented it

It's definitely UTC, I just never really noticed the anomaly before

They call NATO -=> OTAN

but as you point out, blame the French ;)
2

2:22 PM
But in French, it would be TUC

The French are also out-of-whack on Shengen conventions

I can't think of French words without thinking of the Simpsons

In what way?

me or Gayot?
Hi @Shokhet!

Hi @MarkMayo :)

2:27 PM
Can we interest you in the May answerathon comp? :D

The whole “étrangers ni expulsables ni régularisable” business is probably in breach of the return directive

@Relaxed I will show you an example........

But as far as Schengen is concerned, I am not aware of any big issue
People have been complaining about checks in trains to Italy

I think after May, whoever wins it will have to run it. Every time someone edits the post, I get notifications, and I constantly panic when I wake up with 18 notifications in my feed

But everybody seems to agree that the regulations never established a guarantee never to be checked, so…

2:28 PM
@MarkMayo It looks really cool; I'm just not sure if I have the knowledge base for it.

@Relaxed read the comments

@MarkMayo What about Joey ?

@GayotFow Oh, this, OK, wasn't aware of it but it's possible

Is there a deadline for registering in the competition?

yes, end of May 1st :)

2:31 PM
I thought you meant some significant breach of the rules, not a technical issue like this

@Relaxed No, on balance the French are better than the UK

I'll think about it. Thanks for the invite! :)

The UK totally ignores some directives and gets taken to the ECJ for it

@GayotFow prendre ce retour!
(I have no clue about speaking french, I used google translate, it could be telling you "dogs curtain Friday" for all I know)
Although it tells me that would be chiens rideau vendredi

I learned French from my parents simultaneously to learning English

2:34 PM
chiens rideau vendredi??

Nothing worse than a kiwi attemtping to speak french.

It was a long time before I understood there were actually two languges

dogs curtain friday, man.

Except that mine doesn't translate back so nicely :/

Or a necklace.

Google says 'Dog day curtain' for the first one

29 secs ago, by Shokhet
Except that mine doesn't translate back so nicely :/

yeah, was just saying what that 'not so nicely' was ;)

Not sure why translations aren't bidirectional.... *shrug*
@MarkMayo :)

Malta bus question is going hot

@MarkMayo But riding in the middle is so much fun!! :)
They have articulated buses in NYC, for what it's worth :)

2:39 PM
@GayotFow The regulation definitely gives “EE”
But on the other hand, you can find all sorts of other codes in scans on Google Image

yeah I vaguely remember those

Maybe it's not only the French but other states that issue visas with wrong codes on them too…

and the child seating separate question is 2nd highest on the hot list

@Relaxed In the remarks area they can put anything, but in the harmonised area they should go by the regulations
but like you say.......

It's confusing obviously

2:43 PM
I don't know if the UK would refuse an application where the person had a schengen with an invalid country code
But I THINK it's possible

Hey, it's @Vince

6:48 PM
@JoErNanO So where's your entry? :)

7:14 PM
@MarkMayo Thank you for emailing the New Zealand Embassy, Tehran. We will endeavour to answer your email within three working days.
@MarkMayo
this late arrival on the bountied question about hiring a chinese translator...
Sorry for late reply due to my heavy workload these days.

Yes, you can contact me when things on your side become firmed up a bit more. If you need a fixed translator along your tour around China, I suppose a professional translation group may be able to help better. British Council Beijing has a fixed corporate translation group in Beijing which perfoms quite well.

Plus one late email (written in Russian)..........
from the Royal Aurora hotel in Moscow

@GayotFow You must detail the rules of the competition first. ;)

basically saying you cannot take your gf to your room after 11PM
@JoErNanO The royalty-free or "Fair Use" photo that totally answers the question.
Or gets to the "root" of it
The only complexity is the photo must be added within 1 hour of your 'fastest gun' answer
Once you make your FGITW answer, you have 1 hour to edit and add the photo
And if it's just any crap photo, like the Parthenon lit up at night, you LOSE!

7:34 PM
Who decides if it's a crap photo? What about the questions that don't require/can't be answered with a photo?

The other competitors decide
using principles of good sportsmanship :)
Do you want an example?

Hi.
@JoErNanO under the current rules I could visit the site every afternoon at or around 5pm (which is a great time for me, actually) aka UTC midnight, research and write an answer. Under the new rules I need to constantly verify whether the question (and the answer) was nuked and write a new one if it did.
Also, you should give up February, you simply can not win :P
eh, I mean March.

@GayotFow ah that competition one for images
big problem is copyright use of images
@chx it doesn't happen much, but you do present a good point. Good way of preventing it is to answer OLD questions I guess, but...
I'll have a think on it, we have 2 weeks to iron it out ;)
