12:59 AM
yes im sorry
was too tired
my paper deadline was at 4 am
couldn't get up before 11
btw... my accommodation is the stupidest one I had. Can't even print my boarding pass. Every hostel can do that.

1:44 AM
where are the experts when I need them?

Q: What to do when you can print your boarding pass?

RoflcoptrExceptionI just use web checkin for my flight tomorrow. After that I should have printed my boarding pass. However, I realised that this is not possible. So what can I do now? I have already checked in, but no boarding pass. Is there any way to print that again at the airport? Or is it enough if I have my...

1:55 AM
@hippietrail Thanks!
@MarkMayo Really? I thought Rotovegas had lots of tourist trappish stuff.

3 hours later…
4:35 AM
well that's what I meant by the thermal stuff, and there's a Maori Village. And the gondola I guess, with a luge and stuff. But it's not a hugely-happening town really (56000 people).
Oh, @RoflcoptrException - on the skytrain at Broadway-City Hall, AND at Marine Drive, you can check in on machines there. I suspect it might be able to print it out there, although if you've already checked in, I'm not sure? I've not actually used them.
however most airlines will re-print them for you, except for RyanAir who will charge you 40 pounds to do so
although there's been a recent EU ruling that it's the airlines' responsibility to provide passengers with boarding passes, and so in Spain at least, RyanAir can't charge you like that any more, and it should spread elsewhere too
(here's hoping)

4:57 AM
cool
unfortunately, skytrain is not yet running when i leave ;)
how was the run?

I'm still digging paint out of everywhere
it won't come off my hands
came off most other parts
although when I blew my nose, blue came out :/
(looks down) yep, even now, my hands are still a bit blue. seems to be the blue is the dodgy paint - all the other colours came off just fine

Doc
5:47 AM
that's why i love travel - flight delayed due to an emergency landing of another plane (UA flight lost an engine out of Newark). Hertz booking system screwed up my drivers license. Hilton system screwed up my whole booking.
dammit.. someone finally asked the hidden city question i've been waiting for, and it's 2am in the morning so i cant answer now

4 hours later…
9:48 AM
reminds me of Brisvegas in Australia
@RoflcoptrException: when you can print it or when you can't print it?

2 hours later…
12:02 PM
i was going to ask a question about how to reset your internet banking password when you're overseas with no good telephone or internet phone connections ... but i finally solved it

You could ask the question and then self answer it. Now if it happens to me, I know that your know, but I can't find it in our favorite travel problem solver ;)

it might've been too specific to me
anyone else got any ideas?
oh i have another question too!

How did you solve it?
Is sending an email to someone with proper telephone connections an option?

12:21 PM
i hitchhiked to the larger town 10km away in the hope they would have more mobile phone towers so all the lines wouldn't be saturated thus allowing a better chance of a connection... and a chance of a place further from loud music and loud crowds
i think i would have to break the banking rules by telling the person my secret code word
but i asked a different question i've been thinking about:

Q: Are there any places that serve Korean food in Doi Mai or Mangalia in Romania?

hippietrailThose who've never been here before might not expect it, but there's something of a Korean presence on the Black Sea Coast within 10km of the Bulgarian border. The main entity is Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries. Basically one of Korea's biggest corporations is has a huge shipyard here with Kore...

12:40 PM
Thanks for all the comments and answers. I got my boardingpass ;)

how?
reprint it somehow?
oooook,, u have the PDF but u do not have a printer...
right?
@Andra you really answered it well.. you have sorted all options..

1:00 PM
phew took ages to ask a question over on linguistics.SE
anyone got any "matrix" software at hand?
doh battery low time to hitch back to my own beach - later peoplez! (-:

1:59 PM
@hippietrail you know about Koreans in Uzbekistan, right? I wish this weren't the case, TBH. You can thank comrade Stalin for that.

Doc
ahh the joy of visiting holiday destinations - hotels are cheaper during the week than they are on the weekend, rather than the other way around as normal

5 hours later…
6:35 PM
@AndrewGrimm: yes i did know about koreans in central asia - nowadays there are also central asians in korea. i hitchhiked with some kyrgyz there last year (-:
now i've thought up some freighter travel questions ...

1 hour later…
7:41 PM
there ya go - two new freighter questions (-:

cool
stupid air canada managed to loose my baggage

Andra - what's with the downvote campaign you mention in a comment?

8:06 PM
man i'm jealous - i've never had my luggage lost - make them give you compensation!
@MarkMayo: do you have access to any matrix doodads atm?

it will come with the next flight
tonight
i fear that's eraly enough

matrix doodads??

i think that's what you guys call the software or systems that travel agents have access to

right - no, just the matrix.itasoftware.com site
which makes competing on flightfox hard, as there are professional travel agents on there too

can anyone use that site? lemme ava look...

8:15 PM
yep anyone
although the learning curve with the routing codes is a bit tricky
but it still does pretty well even for basic searching
and then gives you the appropriate codes to take to a travel agent

> by Google

google bought it a couple of years ago
which reminds me, I really must play with google.com/flights more
gah, doesn't support ex-CHC flights

matrix.itasoftware.com doesn't work for me - just goes back to the default blank form under "round trip" when i click on "search" )-:

didn't miss a field or something? I've used it a lot, but it's finicky sometimes with input

if i did it's not showing me which one and it's resetting all the other fields
"finicky" is such a genteel word. i prefer "shit"
man the guys on linguistics.SE really hate clicking their vote buttons. i never go to japanese,SE anymore yet my rep there is steadily climbing and on ling it's almost pancaking d-:

8:26 PM
but that's lost its meaning somewhat - it just means 'bad' or 'crap' - finicky is more descriptive and therefore useful :)

but i meant the website is 'bad' and 'crap' (-:

yes, but in what way :)
otherwise when I do software testing, all my test reports would just read 'the software is crap. fix it.' :)

let's see if i have enough ram left to run another browser...
in bad crappy ways d-:
aka not-working ways

haha

evil skype snuck browser extensions in without asking me when it updated
no new news on our graduate design?
nope it's also shit (bad and crap and not working) on firefox! are you sure it's working for you? try looking for a one way flight from bucharest to sydney on september 15 with all the most flexible options

8:45 PM
trying it now

ta mate

yup, success, showing me a multiple airline flight with Emirates+ others on the 17th

suspect it was in Romanian
$859 usd

that's even cheaper than rofl found last time ... using regular websites (when my connection doesn't suck) the cheapest i can find is $1,200!

8:51 PM
well good luck!
I have to head out now

looking what emirates own site says

ttyl

the flight site gods hate me tonight

9:14 PM
so where can I find cheap flights in north amerika? are there any special sites or just the usual suspects?

Doc
9:27 PM
matrix.itasoftware.com

Doc
10:13 PM
hmm.. can you votes against closing a question?

10:39 PM
@markmayo Regarding the downvote compaign. For some weird reason I have touched a nerve with a travel.se member who disagree with my answers. He started to acuse me of downvoting on personal grounds, I was not aware of any downvoting, so I downvoted just to illustrate that it hasn't been me. Not a nice solution, but then I felt I needed to do something to stop the rude discourse. Now I choose to ignore it since it does not seems to help.

10:59 PM
yeah, escalating the downvoting probably doesn't help :) Best to ignore. If there are any actual comments of a personal insult nature directed at you, please do feel free to flag them. It's definitely preferable for everyone to stick to voting and commenting on the questions/answers' merits themselves, rather than personally - that's what the chat room's for (eg mocking the Australians about the rugby, just realised I hadn't brought that up yet)

Doc
crap. we lost?

it also helps the other person to air it out in here, as others may then be able to help convince them that you're not downvoting on personal grounds (some people do see conspiracies everywhere), or he might come in and reveal there's an entirely different reason he's mad.
@Doc - yeah man :) And SA beat Argentina. Both my teams won this weekend :D

Doc
i was considering watching it, but i had a 10am flight so it wasn't going to happen
then i forgot to check the score

11:19 PM
I ddin't see it, yet to find anywhere in Vancouver that might show it, and besides, was doing the 5k run I mentioned anyway at the time
but it seems that this year again, NZ is probably going to be the team to beat

Doc
you can always find it streamed somewhere on the internet
i think i saw an emergency landing at Newark last night. very boring. nobody killed or anything...

11:48 PM
not when I'm on the road attempting to jog ;) but yeah, I should look next time online
you think? was it just a go-around, or what?

Doc
nah.. flight to germany. blew a tire on takeoff and one of the engines injested it. they circled for an hour or so and then landed with no issues

yowsers
that could have been more serious

Doc
we knew what was going on, as the flight i was on had DirecTV and we'd seen a news story about it

I'd like to see a stat on how many go-arounds there are on average - or rather, how frequent they are

Doc
just simple go-around? depends a lot on the airport, but they are uncommon without being rare
i had one many years ago at.. umm.. Sydney i think.

11:56 PM
I've never been on one :/ not that I want any dodgy experiences
I've had one scary landing with RyanAir, that was enough

Doc
we were still maybe 1000+ feet off the ground, so it wasnt really scary

avherald.com - that's scary
look how many there are!

Doc
worst landing i've had was in your background - ZQN

(talking to an airline pilot friend about it)
ah, ZQN, most spectacular and scary landing :)

Doc
avherald.com is only scary if you don't consider how many flights there are globally every day
so, consider ZQN, on a day when no flights had landed there due to snow/ice (biggest snow in Queenstown itself in like 10 years). we were probably not going to land there but go elsewhere and be bussed, but at the last moment they decided we would go to ZQN after all
on landing, maybe a few hunderd feet off the ground, we get an updraft and the left side of the plane bumps up. i watched the runway threshold go under us and thought "hmm.. we're still pretty high"
