Okay so anyone who's been to Taiwan: what's the deal with receipts for store purchases made here? Why do store staff freak out if you refuse to take a receipt or try to throw it away?

in japan they had to put tiny stickers on things i bought at convenience stores when i didn't want to take the plastic bag. i don't think they did it in korea though

Pssh, small country. It'll take me 6 hours by train to go from Taipei to visit my friends in southern Taiwan. Singapore's much smaller than this!

no i wanted to go philippines->taiwan->japan by sea last year but turned out to be too nontrivial to arrange in a short time

I was talking to a Taiwanese guy who's spent 14 years in Singapore today, he was telling me how he was in the army when things weren't so swell between China and Taiwan. How the Chinese sent ships daily and they had to open up their artillery at them every day. What an awkward and pointless dance.
