lotta lurking

@A_S00 general chat is probably a better place to talk about that

(jokes about lurking success rate: 0/1)

gold star
@A_S00 reminds me of the 4e monster archetypes (ie how they behaved in the meta/dm strategy level) one of which was a lurkers which hid popped out grabbed someone and then took them away

@KRyan You should throw your hat into the ring
(I can ping people that aren't here, right?)

curious on the amount of time a moderate is intended to put in during the course of a day? a couple of hours?

8:38 PM
@mxyzplk described his mod activity as 10 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes to an hour in the evening in this answer:

not sure if that's current or representative

@SPavel Don't think so.

huh

I think you can ping people who have been in the chat recently (for some definition of recently; 30 days?) but not people who have never been in the chat.

@A_S00 thanks for the link, I've always been kind of curious about that.

Wow, ten downvotes

Moderation has a somewhat contentious history on RPG.SE.

Since it seems that diversity is important for this election, is there a way we can view current moderators, and what their knowledge, availability, skills, etc are? I believe this will help inform votes.

@JohnGrabanski Sounds like a good question for Meta.

9:06 PM
Whoa, one of the candidates is 39/40
@doppelgreener for president

I've nominated myself as a moderator candidate this year. There's several others in this community I think would do a very good job as moderators, so I'd be keen to see those of you who think you're suited to the role to nominate.
@SPavel Just as long as it's Space President.

space.stackexchange.com is a different website

All that space out there is pretty unruly and could do with some clean-up.

Will you build a wall and make space pay for it?

No, that's silly
there's actually a scifi story where that happens, though it isn't earth's idea....

Earth gets walled in Star Control

A: Name of a book where human thoughts are affecting the universe?

user14111Quarantine by Greg Egan, which was also the answer to this old question and this one and this one and this one. Any of these covers look familiar? From the Wikipedia plot summary: The novel is set in the near future (2034–2080), after the solar system has been surrounded by an impenetrable sh...

There's a book called Quarantine where the solar system gets walled in by aliens.
They find out -- because they're told -- that humans can collapse schrodinger-like superstates through observation, where other lifeforms can't do that.

This means they look out at the universe trying to figure out what stars are, and then determine they're all suns. This is a problem, because there were lifeforms dependent on stars being other things, and now the society that's dependent on their star being a big bright fluffy cloud has seen it suddenly turn into a giant ball of fire and they've been consumed and destroyed.
Once the aliens figure out who's doing it, up goes the wall, and a request to please stop doing this stuff.

Before today I was unaware who are Mods even are. Is there someplace where you can look them up? or is it even supposed to be common knowledge?

@JohnGrabanski This is about SSD and Mxyzplk, right?
@JohnGrabanski There's a Users tab for that: rpg.stackexchange.com/users?tab=moderators It's public knowledge.

9:14 PM
Excellent, yes, then the question is only intended for SSD and Mxyzplk
as it seems Wax Eagle is stepping down? thus election

The membership of the Moderators' Secret Police, on the other hand, is not public knowledge.

@ObliviousSage Yes. However, they are at least very easily contactable. Just type something into a comment field somewhere. No need to submit it. They'll be watching.

Yep. They'll leave a pink carnation emoji in your inbox when it's safe to resume posting.
