00:00 - 20:0020:00 - 00:00

8:00 PM

@Simply how would you rate my proof in the specific case of $\int_{T}f(z)=0$

@Zophikel It's incomplete, isn't it?

@Simply I added a remark putting the Bounds on $T$
therefore making the proof correct in the specific case :(
@Simply also when I copied the question it didn't include any constraits on $T$ :(

@Zophikel But I don't think you ever finished the proof?

8:08 PM
@Simply how come I thought adding the remark would be enough, also I did omit some computations

Oh, okay, then I suppose you are done then

@Simply also I see another mistake I didn't see at first $T$ is supposed to be a triangle but a curve would be better for visualization purposes
@Simply how would you rate my attack on the question

I'll give 2/5

@Simply :(
why a two if I may ask

8:14 PM
@Simply at least offer some feedback man was it the flow of writing not fully addressing the question what ?

Didn't feel worthy of a `3/5`, you can do better.
Didn't feel worthy of a `1/5`...
I kinda made it based on gut feeling

oh
@Simply so a 2/5 is needs improvement

That's how I feel

@Simply what could I improve on

I feel like your vision is too narrow

8:17 PM
@Simply elaborate plz

I feel like when you tackle the problem, you... tackle it
but you don't think around it
and you don't try to understand the big picture

@Simply usually I came up with an idea on why somethings true and then drill down the details
^ But that only happens when I fully understanding something

@Zophikel When you started the problem on Cauchy-Riemann + Green's theorem, what did you try outside of what you had on your math.SE post

@Simply nothing else :( usually I use the hints as steeping points
@Simply your saying I should have my "eyes" on a problem

I'm saying that perhaps you should take a moment and go back to older problems and see if you can solve them in ways you hadn't solved them before

8:26 PM
ahh ok @Simply
@Simply that's what you be expanding your vision

It's one of the reasons I love m.se. I get to read what other people try to solve problems I already know how to solve, but in different ways.

@Simply usually that way I do this is search for alternate proofs and work through them
But @Simply but usually understanding the "Big Picture" comes with breaking a concept down

I don't think breaking a concept down can be done by tackling a problem with only one line of vision
And its okay if you fail to see the end of the road. Tackling the problem multiple ways often gives insight
@Zophikel Did you know that I don't always know how I'll solve the problem when I see one on the main site?

@Simply no I didn't know that I've picked up new tehcniques from the main site
@Simply and when the books I use give hints sometimes I try to crave out my own appoarch

When I have an unusual problem I'm faced with, I take a moment to absorb the question
Then I just start typing
And I kinda let everything go between intuition and a sort of "in the moment" kind of thing
But I keep my eyes open
And often the answers I post on m.se aren't my first thoughts, or even my second

8:31 PM
@Simply when i'm faced with something unusual I usually break down the question inutution and build up any thoughts rigously
or play with it and see what breaks
also I have backup plans for when things don't play nice
                     ^ lol

Mmm... but my point is that half the goal is figuring out how to figure out

yeah
@Simply for me it's different every time
sometimes you just know what to do other times not so much

and that's a game you get good at by looking at problems and solving them in multiple ways

@Simply yeah
I've gotten good at having a backup plan now I need to learn how to use my tools In more creative way s

@Zophikel Well even when you think you know what you are doing, don't let it get to you
There is plenty to learn from each problem, and I don't think you've spent enough time going over problems after you've finished them

8:35 PM
@Simply yeah that is true.
@Simply usually I reflect on the problem
@Simply what do you mean by don't let it get to me

@Zophikel Have you answered any questions on m.se?

@Simply no :(
I should but I haven't

@Zophikel Don't believe you understand a problem just because you've solved it. Most problems hold more to them than one solution reveals

@Simply interesting, also some problems lead to bigger questions

Well, on the occasion, did you know I'll post multiple answers to the same question?

8:37 PM
@Simply yeah

oh, well, I post multiple answers to the same questions because I often look for ways to solve problems I've already solved

@Simply so your trying to extend your range

Absolutely, and I believe you should too

@Simply what i'm trying to do is coming up with new ideas to solve problems
@Simply hmmmm I should extend my range a little bit more maybe that's what's been missing from my development

lol, yeah

8:45 PM
@Simply usually for me to understand a problem better is to make mistakes
@Simply you should note that I don't really have a "Style" yet

@Simply i'm still trying to mathematically find my style I mean I've kinda figured it out
I start of by making observations and deducing moves from those "observations" and eventually keep making observations until the problem is solved
       ^ But the observations made can differ depending on the point of view you take

Well, that's good
@Zophikel Then take a broader view

@Simply that will require more time and knowledge
@Simply anything else or is that the only thing

@Zophikel What do you think makes me a seemingly good mathematician?

8:51 PM
@Simply hmmm... I'd say it's your current understanding

could you be more specific?

@Simply your intuition with $\mathbb{C}$
@Simply how you take apart and understand things

I don't think its my intuition with $\mathbb C$
@Zophikel I do think I take things apart well though

@Simply i'm not sure

@Zophikel What do you think it takes to take problems apart well?

8:54 PM
@Simply it requires a very deep understanding of the problem and concept realted to the problem

@Zophikel Then what allows me to tackle problems on m.se that I've never seen before?

@Simply understanding

But I don't always understand the problems well when I first look at them

@Simply hmmmm..... For me when I see a problem I haven't done before I look through lots of examples to gain as much eyesight into the probelm
I'm not sure what you do

Well I'd say I gain understanding of the problem by trying it myself, even if I can't solve it
In fact, I don't finish lots of the answers that I start

8:59 PM
@Simply interesting I didn't know that
@Simply but is it a bad idea to look at examples
@Simply so you try to make as much progress as possible that what I try to do
also I haven't had a chance to answer on MSE because of the time it can take

@Zophikel of course its not bad to look at examples. My equivalent is looking at lots of answers on m.se
@Zophikel perfectly reasonable

@Simply but I do try to border my range it's just that making observations takes a lot of time
I have to rip apart the concept behind the problem look at defintions to make sure i'm on the right track

All I'm saying is you get a lot out of trying a problem, even if you don't solve it, or if you've already solved. Just try the problem again a few more times
@Zophikel Maybe you should try solving a problem without looking at the definitions

Be gone, nearly closed question, be gone! @SimplyBeautifulArt math.stackexchange.com/questions/2308239/…

@Simply yeah
o/ @amWhy

9:02 PM
They say blind men see more than what we can see with our eyes in some ways

o/ @Zophikel

@Simply I have tried problems without looking at definitions I make the right plays I just can't justify them

@Simply 8P Fly-swatter question math.stackexchange.com/questions/2304842/…

@Zophikel Then try justifying something other than the definitions you're given. Don't try solving the problem in the way your first instinct guides you, find a new path.

9:05 PM
ahh ok @Simply

@amWhy D: I already voted lol

@Simply but I've gotten better at solving problems, but I sometimes find it hard to fight my intuition

@SimplyBeautifulArt :<)

@Simply usually when I broke down a problem to intuition it becomes easier to find a solution
@Simply thanks for the advice I think this was the one thing missing form my mathematical development
:<)

Community advisory (@SimplyBeautifulArt, or any user with close-vote privileges on MSE - I see you @Mithrandir ) math.stackexchange.com/questions/2318883/… ... the suspense is getting beyond bearable, so, "raise arms against a sea of troubles!" (per Hamlet) and close.

9:49 PM
:D

@SimplyBeautifulArt Glad you back!

lurking around

lol

@shredalert :P

10:03 PM
Oh no! I've been discovered!

@shredalert :p

10:26 PM
14 messages moved to trash

@amWhy :O One moment

I see messages moved to the rubbish bin

@shredalert I didn't think anyone was too keen on my plea for a star or two of the comment I made in Constructive Feedback chat, (it is a self-reminder comment), no biggy.
Actually, thanks to @SimplyBeautifulArt I learned about "pinning" a comment. I feel so silly now!!

@shredalert So... I never heard about the outcome of your exam on Friday.... or at least how you experienced taking it and how you think you did!? Hmmm Maybe I should scroll back to see any posts you made about it post-exam.

10:38 PM
@amWhy 95% at least.
More concerned about these modal logic exercises lol

I keep noticing MSE is much like reddit how do questions with enough work get downvoted

I had a little discussion in the logic chatroom about it earlier today @amWhy. :)

@shredalert Awesome. Yeah, modal logic kind of turns everything one's learned about classical logic tipped askew!

I'm embracing the madness.
2

Not entirely turned upside down, hence "tipped over, askew"... Embrace the madness indeed!

10:41 PM
@shredalert i'm really enjoying the theory of Harmonic Functions

@SimplyBeautifulArt One more plea for the (MSE) day: One more delete vote needed here

@SimplyBeautifulArt You are my hero, today, bro!

@Zophikel all you analysts

10:51 PM
@shredalert hmmm i'm not sure what I am yet

You are possibly an analyst

@shredalert interesting
if i'm a good analyst then why do I keep getting downvoted on MSE
:P
@shredalert how can you tell
