I currently have 4x1GB. Any amount of 2GB sticks would be an improvement, and I would put the extra RAM in one of my other DDR2 Optiplexes.
Funny story, I salvaged these from a "computer art" sculpture made of surplus computers.

not sure what Dell system you're using but that's just one option
it's 'used' but 'guaranteed to work'
AND it's the low density ram you asked for :p
it's also an 8GB kit
