I would like to start encouraging more people to use chat
Philosophy perhaps more than any other SE really needs a place to discuss and do philosophy

Q: Alternative canon for Western modern philosophy

gogolgadgetsAfter Richard Rorty died, Raymond Geuss wrote some recollections of their encounters. In his reminiscence, Geuss mentions that Rorty projected teaching an undergraduate course called "An Alternate History of Modern Philosophy". The idea was that the course would teach philosophy from the Middle...

Yes, agreed and @JosephWeissman I agree; a contest would be pretty awesome! We need some motivation for people to ask some good questions. Right now, Philosophy.SE is dragging along with around 2 questions a day
(on average)
A contest will surely help increase activity
and yes, the chatroom is a very good opportunity to actually DISCUSS philosophy rather than strictly answer direct questions
00:37
Problem is that the activity increase from contests seems mostly temporary; as soon as it's over things settle back down to normal. We've held several contests in the past, and mods are able to see the data on site activity
incidentally I think simply asking more questions increases activity more; I did an experiment a few months ago where I asked a bunch of questions (even though I already knew the answer to them) and monitored site activity, and you could see a marked jump in activity.

exactly. we need more people to ASK questions. because even if we have the most knowledgeable people, it's useless if there aren't any questions to answer

the most knowledgeable people know the best questions to ask, and stoicfury's experiment shows that asking questions can increase activity itself
I don't have any suggestions for implementation, but what we need is a consistent asking-more-questions boost among the expert users
unfortunately right now they primarily give answers. Of course, that's excellent, but by itself doesn't improve site activity
if we got just one more question per expert user per week, we could increase our daily question rate by 1
02:50
...and that's a positive feedback loop!
Here's your motivation, expert users: the more questions you ask, the more questions others will ask (ref. stoicfury's immortalized-by-chat study), and the more questions there will be for you to answer! More answers means more rep!

Q: Is Philosophy formalisable?

ThisIsNotAnIdThis is something that has irked me for quite some time, especially since I come from a mathematically oriented background. Can the field of Philosophy be formalised in the sense that Mathematics is formalised? It doesn't necessarily have to be an axiomatic formalisation, but can we find some un...

I am just getting into philosophy(Logic), anything cool I should know about?

Not too much activity I see.
How formal am I supposed to be in this channel? I would be sorrowed to lose the oportunity to be in here.

@stoicfury I have a question: I just recently earned the +100 association bonus from stackexchange. However, when I click on users, my reputation under every different tab (except for the "all" tab) does not take into account this association bonus.
It would be nice if it counted it (especially for the week) since I would temporarily see my name high up there
but it seems that this is a glitch since it includes the association bonus for everyone else
except for me
:(
for example, gogolgadgets has earned the association bonus recently (after me, however) but in the weekly top users, he is now first because of that

@fabianhjr there is no real "formality" requirement
@Outlier: idk, i can look into it later, gotta run to the gym promised a friend I'd train him today, bbl

Q: Is it possible in any way to justify murder using reason or logic?

Kevin DavisSome believe that murder is only committed due to an emotional or moral action, but can you ever justify it with reason?
