Q: What kinds of shopping questions are OK?

Robert LongsonHere's some example questions... How can I Electric Power, Water Wash soiled fruits and vegetables? Is there a vegan or vegetarian instant noodles? What is a healthy seasoning powder for vegetarians? There may be others but they are characterised by asking for where to buy something. Of course ...

@Randal'Thor great idea... reminds me of this recent question
@Zanna While you're here, what do you think about -tagging What can we do to avoid questions that will attract bad answers?, per this?
I've already -tagged a couple of other posts; my only qualm with this one is that I'm not sure if "Insist that questions and answers be limited to a specific veg*n lifestyle" is something we've actually done or want to do here (it certainly makes sense on religion sites, not sure about V&V), but you'd know better as you've been much more consistently active here.
@Randal'Thor yeah I totally feel you. When I re-read Jon's answer in the last year, I though, damn, we have not enforced this AT ALL
my site is Ask Ubuntu
the scope is defined pretty sharply and I feel understand it well (though there are always some corner cases as new stuff happens in the Ubuntu world)
so when this site came into being, I was using the same lens, and voting to close a lot
but years later, I still feel that I don't know what people want this site to be for (Nic did great work towards figuring that out for us), and since I realised that, I have taken a different attitude, like keep watching and thinking about this
and trying to accept as many kinds of questions as possible
as you can see, I really need your help :)
@Randal'Thor we have not really had 'sectarian' kinda problems
people can get sanctimonious and I've cited that post to try to get across the point that this isn't the place for evangelism

Yep, I'm trying to pick up Nic's work now - I can see from meta how much he did towards scoping the site and its tags.
@Zanna but maybe we don't need the citation to make that point
@Randal'Thor :)
It's difficult to know, as such a small site, whether to lean our scope towards strictness (prioritising quality at the expense of quantity) or lenience (to get more content but maybe some of it not so suitable).
thank you for your amazing work so far
My personal feeling is to push a little more towards strictness than we've been doing for a while. Later on when the site gets bigger, those very broad questions will start to attract more drive-by answers and won't give a good impression.
@Randal'Thor that's the problem, I need more examples... on Ask Ubuntu I arrived at my scope awareness by reviewing thousands of posts, and discussing hundreds
14:15
@Zanna Well I haven't done much yet, mostly gathering information.
@Randal'Thor I'm happy to go with that
@Randal'Thor research is hard work
@Zanna Yep, that's exactly why I've collated all those scope-related meta posts: if we have a list of what types of question are considered OK here and what restrictions are put on them, then it'll be easier for us to start generating good content. Even if it's just a few of us posting stuff for a while, that increasing volume will help to draw in more people. Especially if we can get a few HNQ posts (which only requires a Q&A with a few upvotes within 8 hours of posting).
At some point we might even think about, essentially, a planned HNQ: figuring out a Q&A to post together, that's both good quality and has an appealing title, to both draw people in and show them what we like here.
@Randal'Thor *_*
