Q: Are foods with zero cholesterol always vegan?

NicI've developed this quick trick after reading a lot of food labels. If the nutrition label says it contains any cholesterol, it's definitely not vegan. This is based on the idea that cholesterol is only produced by animals, never by plants. Therefore, a vegan diet is completely free of diet...

Q: Which plant-based milks have the highest protein content?

NicI normally buy soy milk because I prefer the taste and consistency, and also because it's a good source of protein. But I noticed that some other non-dairy milks such as coconut milk seem to have very little protein content. Does that make them a bad substitute for cow's milk? Which plant-based ...

Q: Why am I receiving notifications about empty review queues?

NicI've noticed that I very frequently see the red dot appear on the navbar link to review queues, but when I click on it there are no queues that need any attention. This seems to happen almost every day, sometimes multiple times per day. Is this a weird timing issue where somebody else is consist...

Q: How should we handle parent tags and tag trees?

NicI've spent quite a bit of time thinking about the tagging structure we're using on this site, and one thing that particularly concerns me right now is parent tags or tag trees. Any tag which is a complete superset of another tag can be considered a parent tag, and when we get multiple levels of p...

I'm concerned that Area 51 stats show that Vegetarianism.SE gets zero visits per day.

@Nic I think there's a network-wide bug with whatever records site visits
the site analytics page shows 0 views on AU since before April XD

Nic

okay, well I feel a bit better about that!

@Zanna National Vegetarian Week in the United States, I guess.

looks like UK Vegetarian Society

I think Stack Exchange might be finally penalizing me for asking too many questions. I just asked about making egg-free okonomiyaki and it doesn't show up on the active tab or new questions tab.

Oh I totally failed to make that recipe XD

Nic
failed how? It didn't turn out at all?

I see your question
I'm not good at making anything fried, basically
that one fell apart
it tasted ok though!

Nic
6:59 PM
what did you use for the egg?

nothing - I make pancakes without egg all the time, so, why would it fail? XD
I have a recipe for okara okonomiyaki with ground flaxseed instead of egg

Nic
oh that sounds fun

shall I write it as an answer?

Nic
I have ground flaxseed on hand but not okara, so I might try it with just regular flour and water
sure, add it as an answer! (also I'm curious about whether it will appear on the active tab if it receives an answer.)
oh never mind, it appeared for me right after you upvoted it

Q: Why do some people have a bad reaction to dairy products?

NicI have a few friends who avoid most dairy products (liquid milk especially) because they have a bad reaction after eating those foods, even in small quantities. Some of them avoid all dairy products, but others seem to be okay with certain dairy products like butter or cheese or ice cream. What ...

Q: How can I make okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) without egg?

NicA friend of mine really likes okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancake) but always makes it with egg. I don't eat eggs, so I'd like to make an adaptation that we can share and eat together. Okonomiyaki is normally made from shredded cabbage, flour, eggs, and water. I know there are a wide variety o...

Oh and btw @Zanna I'm warming up to your suggestion that we should burninate the tag. I did some exploration of our "tag tree" problem on Meta.

I've yet to read that question
I decided I had to get some study done today even if I had to stay away from SE
I want to answer your milk question haha

Nic
Good plan! I'll stop tagging you in chat. :)

7:28 PM
feel free to ping me any time

1 hour later…
Nic
No, I think it's a good tag and I want to keep it. Maybe my suggested wording is bad.

I think the usage guidance (excerpt) should tell folks when and when not to use the tag
I wrote that because I thought the tag was good but might not be a phrase that came to mind when tagging

Nic
Oh, I remember why I did that. And my suggestion is indeed wrong. I was looking at the tags page and noticed that the suggestion was cut off, so I thought it would be better to remove the half sentence.

don't you think outreach is about talking to folk on the outside (non veg*ns)

Nic
But I just realized that you get a larger preview in the Ask Question prompt

8:52 PM
yeah, the previews on the listing aren't important imho

Nic
Definitely keep the sentence about [living-with-omnivores] in that tag excerpt.
@Zanna I see outreach as being inclusive of efforts to support current vegetarians and vegans, especially new veg*ns, mainly because a lot of people try veg*nism for a short time and then stop.

hmm... that's not how I understand the word outreach in general... if you are already in, there's no need to reach out to you
well, time for bed here, so I'm not doing anything with that suggestion just now

Nic
I'm okay with excluding that from the definition of the outreach tag, though I'd really like to hear a suggestion about a word/tag that describes supporting practicing vegetarians/vegans :)

thanks for your hard work on the tags!

Nic
thanks! goodnight.

Q: Did Gordon Ramsay actually go vegan?

NicLast month celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay posted on Twitter that he is going to "give this #vegan thing a try". Is Gordon Ramsay actually going vegan? This would be a huge reversal from his earlier statement that he will never go vegan.
