11:32 AM
@Zanna Yeah I've accidentally bought the non-B12 version and then been like "why do they even MAKE one without B12?!?"

I think my mum has B12 deficiency. I feel really guilty :S

Did you convince her to be vegan?
Do you supplement? And if so what?

Been vegetarian for 2 years, but she mainly eats my cooking. She eats cheese sometimes and things that contain egg, but not much. She does eat marmite, but I think you have to eat like half a tub to get the RDA... She said "my hands and feet are itchy" and I was like "argh quick have some of this B12 liquid"

Oh nice one for knowing the signs of deficiency
Or did you google it? :D

@DavidS yeah I don't think it's practical to try getting B12 from food, unless you actually want to eat nooch in large quantities every day. I like the spray one but it's too expensive so I got some that you take in drops. I'm going to put it into a drink to make it taste inoffensive. I'm pretty sure the dose is huge enough that taking some whenever I remember to (at wildly irregular intervals, but on average about 3 times a week) will hit the spot. My B12 was fine last time I had a blood test
@DavidS nah that symptom is well known... but it's a late one :(

11:39 AM
I think excess B6 might have a similar symptom (tingling)
I used to take a multi but then saw something by Dr Greger I think saying that actually it's kind of a waste of time because your body kind of doesn't recognise it or something, so I get most things from a whole food source now and supplement B12 and D2, plus I think I might add Iodine because I don't eat seaweed every day, I need to see how often you can get away with it...

ah maybe yeah. I don't think she takes any supplements though. It could be a symptom of other things. But she's over 50 so should be supplementing B12 anyway I think
anyway, we'll see if the symptom goes away

Yeah even omnivores can be deficient as they get older huh

right

My mum doesn't like vegetables so she's deficient in everything and I can only nag her so much.
And diabetic

damn :S
I take a multivitamin when I remember, like once a week. But separate B12 and D-complex. That I also take when I remember
iodine is a really tricky one. Nobody seems to know exactly how much we need

11:43 AM
And on the basis of type 2 being frequently considered curable with a plant-based diet based on things I've been reading and watching of late, I really want to try harder to get her to but, I know she will struggle to change (she's 73)

yeah... does she like any kind of food you can easily hide vegetables in, like curry or pasta with sauce?

no
she basically doesn't like anything

that's... difficult
what does she eat?!

when she and dad would have chinese or something she would have chicken and chips
exactly
breakfast is fruit and fibre, lunch is toast with marmalade, dinner will be something with no colours or something fried or whatever...
like, she's ok with potatoes and cauliflower (boiled to death)

soup?

11:47 AM
she doesnt like milk, she doesnt like eggs (I mean, that would be fine normally but... just saying)
Yeah, well, I could make her homemade soups
she's even said "if you want to make me soup that's fine!"
cuz, she used to have heinz vegetable or tomato or oxtail ...

ah that's good. You can put anything in a soup

but now they have all this sugar she doesnt eat them, but she doesnt like cooking... so she doesnt make her own soup really
I've managed to coax her onto kale now and then and she says she's been feeling less tired (she's slightly anemic as well)

you can make a big soup once a week and she can reheat portions for a few days
good job!

ok, she likes onion so, although she doesnt like garlic at least i can get some of those things from onion
oh and butter beans
so like, in a soup I could get a bunch of things she would probably be ok with

yeah :) You can also put nut butter into soup

11:55 AM
sneaky
wonder how flax would be mixed in after cooking
I should check the effect of heat on omega 3

pumpkin seed butter or ground almonds or Brazil nuts too

Q: How does cooking affect Omega 3 oils in flax, chia and other seeds?

ZannaI often use chia and flax seeds in my baking, mainly to help bind the mixture (sometimes to replace egg). I know they're a great source of Omega 3 (potentially scarce in veg*n diets) when raw, but I was wondering if that held when they were cooked. Does Omega 3 survive cooking? If not, how does...

haha thanks

:)

12:37 PM

Q: How to manipulate people to turn vegan

Ram KeswaniThe condition of every animal, you name it in India and almost everywhere in Earth is terrible. Slaughtered, tied, locked in small cages and what not. India is one of the leaders in leather production. Leather is considered "luxurious". I have started doing atleast something for them. To stop peo...
