@DLosc I like how many examples are math-based. :D

@flawr ELI5 conjugate transpose?
flawr
Do you understand the
transpose
?
Riker
yes
flawr
The
conjugate
in the conjugation of complex numbers.
Riker
wait why would you cnojugate though
flawr
And usually when you transpose matrices in the reals, the corresponding natural operation over complex matrices is the
conjugate transpose
(If you apply the conjugate transpose to a real matrix it is just the transposed)
Riker
20:29
oh, makes sense
flawr
This has to do with scalar products and norms
Riker
ah
why would you conjugate matrices though?
flawr
The idea is that if you have a scalar product, you can construct a norm out of that:
norm(u) := sqrt(scalarprod(u,u))
Riker
ah
flawr
But if you have complex numbers, you still want the norm to be a positive number.
Riker
20:30
ah
flawr
So you need norm(u)^2 := scalarprod(u, conj(u))
Riker
btw, is
u
standard for that?
i.e. x and y are standard variables for most linear equations
is u standard for matrices?
flawr
Ah no we usually use u,v,w for vectors.
Riker
ah, and then
z
for complex?
and abc are generally quadratics iirc but I may be wrong
flawr
Well it always depends on the context :)
Usually there are too few characters anyway, that is why we use the greek alphabet / script symbols / hats /tildas e.t.c
Riker
20:32
true
hats and tildes are cool
flawr
fun fact: In german we don't say x-tilde but
x-Schlange
(x-snake)
Riker
lol
