@Zaid - I've got the short block together. There isn't too much more I can get done until I get the cam, so that will be the next purchase. As soon as I get the cam, I can fit the timing set, then put the front cover and the oil pan on. I still need to clean and paint the oil pan.
There are several things with the engine I've found as I've been putting it together:
1. The main bearing clearances are a little bit loose, but still within tolerance.
2. The rod bearings are right where they should be. They should be between .0013-.0035" and all are sitting at ~.0015-.0020". Very much on the lower limit the spread.
3. When checking for how much torque to turn the rotating assembly over, it was @ ~22lb-ft ... the spec says it should be no more than 35-40lb-ft.
I'm happy with all three of these things.
With the rotating assembly torque, the less you have, the better. It's one of the reasons they went to thinner rings in the newer engines is because it creates less friction in the engine, which allows for less frictional losses during operation, which means freed up HP and better fuel mileage.
