@TheEnvironmentalist [Disclaimer: I haven't seen that show.] A civilian AED (automatic external defibrillator; the kind that you find in public buildings along with fire extinguishers) has safety features that prevent it from firing continuously. AEDs refuse to fire if they do see a healthy pulse.

@TheEnvironmentalist The question actually belongs to the Movies.SE stack. The right way to do this would be to post the question to the Movies.SE, then post links to the question in the EE.SE chat (and to the Health.SE chat too, those forlks might be versed in defibrillators).

@NickAlexeev I think that it should be fine as long as whomever asks the question is sure to frame the use of the defibrillator around the TV show. Something like "Does this particular scene from Dexter accurately reflect how a defibrillator would operate?" I would suggest tagging it with the realism tag along with the Dexter tag, of course :) I am a nurse. I would be happy to answer that question for you if you choose to post it :)
I have migrated the question over to Movies.SE . I don't have the account there, so I can't fix the tags.
