What are the classical ones? 動詞「す」「く」 and 助動詞「ぬ」? I feel like there are more I can't quite think of

(How long has Matt been doing this sort of thing...?)

Anonymous
Hah, I had no idea 蹴る was special

Anonymous
I don't know. I haven't read most of Matt's blog

> (Although really, when talking about modern Japanese, I think the "group 1", "group 2a", and "group 2b" terminology is the most helpful of all.)

Huh. I always felt the group number stuff was opaque, whereas 五段・一段動詞 were relatively transparent, and that seems like a plus to me

Looks like the first post on his blog is in Jan 2005 and he's already talking about some hardcore poetry then, so "a long time" it seems.
I wonder what I'll be doing in 10 years.

I am thinking about people who stay at the same company for decades and am kind of taken aback at how that's even possible.

1:05 AM
Well, if they keep throwing money at you, and the company doesn't turn into something you can't stomach...

Anonymous
Why not? :-)

2:05 AM
I guess, looking back, I'm never intensely interested in a single thing for more than say 2 or 3 years.

Anonymous
Well, that might change as you get older. :-)

Anonymous
Or not. I have no idea.

Perhaps. Lately I've been very interested in Judo, though I haven't been doing it at all, so it's kind of a strange interest.
I'm kind of just hoping it will pass, because it doesn't make much sense to invest time in Judo.

Oh! Um. What sort of interest can you have in 柔道 without actually doing it? :-)

I suppose you could watch it, like a sport
I don't actually get to play Go very much anymore (sadly), but I do watch the tournament games on sunday morning

Anonymous
Oh. I suppose so.

2:47 AM
Just watching it and reading about it.
I've also been spending a lot of time getting in better shape, which would be necessary if I want to do 柔道, and totally a good idea even if I'm not going to anyways, hehe.

3:08 AM
@DariusJahandarie how long have you been interested in japanese?
i like to learn about lots of different things too
i could see myself settling in a job though, if i have enough hobbies to keep myself busy
where "keep myself busy" means... keep my mind stimulated

Anonymous
Technically, a job can do that too. :-)

Anonymous
I do have a lot of interests myself.

that would be ideal, if i could get a job like that
i'm not counting on it though. maybe someday :)

@ogicu8abruok Hmm, I've had a passive interest for 4 or 5 years (read: watching anime), but only a serious interest for 2 years or so.
I couldn't write a single grammatical sentence 2 years ago, anyways. Except maybe some really simple crap.

I started about 16 years ago (or is it 17 now?), but I wasn't able to devote a lot of time to Japanese that whole time

Anonymous
I should probably be embarrassed that I'm not better at Japanese than I am, after all that time... :-)

Well, your kanji knowledge surely seems decades away to me.
Oh, interesting. Apparently I could actually form a somewhat okay sentence 3 years ago. Full of grammar errors, but well, still understandable.
I don't recall actually starting serious reading about Japanese until 2 years ago though. Maybe I'm just forgetting something.
About 1.5 years ago is when I started my Japanese class in college, and my professor there was the person who started sending me linguistics papers, and that's when I really started getting into things.

Hooray!

Yeah. I'm very happy I got to meet him.
I think I probably would have quit Japanese if I ended up with a normal professor. :)

Kanji I forgot again today: 蹂躙

@snailplane: Hmm... I think I'm going to copy your intonation example into that formatting meta FAQ. Mind if I steal it blatantly?
(or you could put it in there) :)

@jkerian Steal!
