@ssb Oh! Good for you.

You know, I've read that some people think chairs are bad for people.

I'm so bad at keigo.

ssb
2:35 AM
everything i've seen seems to condemn sitting in general and not just chairs, but who knows
keigo.. i'm slowly getting better at it i think!

Is it the chairs that are bad though... or sitting?
Pretty sure it was the sitting (and the resultant spine curving)
ironically... slightly reclining WITH lower back support is supposed to be "not terrible" for you

@ssb ざぶとん?
座るのが良くないとしたら・・・立って勉強するほうがいいとか?しんどい
正座するのは足に良くないと思う・・たぶん
正座より椅子のほうがよさそう

@Chocolate I never learned to sit seiza

Anonymous
I always wondered if it was bad for your feet

Anonymous
Wikipedia says "Experienced seiza practitioners can maintain the posture for forty minutes or more with minimal discomfort."

I wonder if it would be bad for my knees... My family has bad knees

If I try sitting with pressure on my feet like that I get toe cramps... But I'm probably doing it wrong.

10:46 AM
only toe cramps? my thigh and calf can't take it after a while

Am I missing something? Who didn't grow up sitting a lot on the floor? Is it something super specific about the feet for it to be "seiza"?

I grew up sitting on the floor but not seiza, more like cross-legged (what we called "Indian-style")

@Chocolate yes zabuton, but i also have this floor-couch thing that I got that's pretty nice
big problems with condensation forming on my wood floor though so i have to be careful..
the latest trend is standing desks and treadmill desks for people who sit a lot

Anonymous
Yeah, those are neat.

Anonymous
I mean, in theory. I've never seen a treadmill desk.

Anonymous
Standing desks were around 10-15 years ago at least.

I've read that stuff about sitting being bad for you generally.

Anonymous
The stuff about other types of sitting besides in a chair being better for you were based on different ideas

What I think is actually true (ergonomically, that is) is moving around a lot is good for you, not staying in any one position.

ssb
i'd like to have an exercise bike style desk where it would be easier to start and stop physical activity on a whim

Anonymous
That's a neat idea.

My old office used to be directly next to the bay trail, and I went for walks every day

ssb
but ultimately that is sitting too so who knows how effective it is in comparison

Anonymous
It's a little less convenient here, although I can of course find places to walk.

I did a lot of my best coding in my head while I was outdoors. Being outdoors in a wide open space seems to put me in a better headspace for solving problems

These days I don't spend nearly enough time outside
