12:00 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 Now that's a party :D

Henry WH Hack v2.1.1 has removed an event from this room's schedule.

I am glad I wasn't trying to view that on my mobile.
1 message moved to Sandbox

12:41 AM
I do believe I have found a bug in GnuPG. Now I have to figure out how to present it so that I can report it. Oh, and how to report it as well.

1:29 AM
@GypsySpellweaver D.Hutchinson is back.
Will you like to give a father grown up to son teen talk?

'll pass. Didn't do any good last time. :(

1:44 AM
Time to switch my OS and do a complete fresh compile/install of GnuPG for testing.

@GypsySpellweaver Please ignore me for about 5 minutes.

Think I'll try it in Ubuntu, just for fun. :)

Click the ignore button.
5 minutes.
And tell me when.
Are you ignoring me?
No response so I guess so.
I am going to invite you to a room while you are ignoring me.

Done. And WOW. all your chat posts vaporized. Of course you can't tell me anything until 01:51 UTC. I'll log in once I reboot into Ubuntu.

He wasn't ignoring me.
Nevermind.

1:52 AM
Well I'm back. In Ubuntu. and all your messages are still gone. Now I have to figure out how to un-ignore you.
Got it! :) All the posts are back, including what you said while you were invisible. I didn't get the invite either. Neither when you did it, nor when I removed the ignore.

2:40 AM
D.Hutchinson just floated into IPS chat. Lets see what happens.

@GypsySpellweaver Nothing.

Maybe he is going to watch and learn.

Ramiro LamboyI am 37 years old and I am and I am looking for a beautiful woman so that we can meet and take it from there so please put me at the right age I am trying to go to the free porno.com

:O
I will count it as spam.
Let me whois porno.com.
I could just open it in my browser but nope.
Ok.
@GypsySpellweaver How is your computer?

2:58 AM
Just fine. Running under Ubuntu at the moment. Want to make a completely clean build of GnuPG to verify the bug and report it.

3:49 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Dude, do you do any type of hacking?

In the sense of programming, yes. In the black hat sense, no.

I am talking about the white hat type.

I don't look for exploits, or do security testing. I rarely find bugs, and report them without trying to fix them when I do. Does that answer the question?

I am going to cover my webcam.
I have the weird feeling of you watching me.
I think am watching too much Mr. Nightmare.
But just incase.
OK, done. :D

I think I sent you a link to the EFF's stickers, didn't I?

3:58 AM
Yes.
I think so.
I think I am over paranoid.
Let's see:
I use strong passwords
I use encryption
I keep my system updated
I have my AV. (Even if it's not needed.)
I have a rootkit scanner.
I have two firewalls. (hardware (Router) and Software)
I use a low level user account
but:
I don't cover my webcam or mic.
@GypsySpellweaver Dude just use black tape.
Oh wait.
Also I use common sense.
Anything someone links in the chat that doesn't look like something I recognize will not be visited.
I think I have offended him.
@GypsySpellweaver Did I offended you?
No response.
OK, I guest he got offended.
BTW: ArtOfCode is still here.
Nice!

4:24 AM
Not offended, just got called away again. Duties are rather unpredictable around here.

AoC never left, but I don't think he's actually "here" either. Just never logged out of the system.

seen 52s ago, talked 2m ago
OK, he is here.
echo "<string>" | <hashname>sum
is nice.

He's active in Awkward Silence with D.Hutchinson

Let me see.

4:31 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 cat <<EOF | hashname sum lets you work with multiple lines.

Have you used the here-document format before?

The << tells the shell to start reading on the next line, and to continue reading each line, until a line has only the EOF on it. The EOF can be anything you want, but EOF is the most common thing used.
root@ubuntu:/shares/data/__restore# cat << EOF | md5sum
Hello there
How are you
I am fine
EOF
0bdc6f7a57a104038ffa44bf6752e43e  -

I already knew about:
>
and
>>
(>) Will override the current content(s) of the file and (>>) will add it to the bottom of the file.
Of course
You already knew that as well.
Simple Linux thing really.
Is
<
<<
the opposite?

4:39 AM
You can use > to change the destination of output from standard error (stderr) to standard output (stdout) as well.

I don't know how that will work out but, I must ask.
@GypsySpellweaver Yes, it's redirecting outputs.

the < tells it to read the file as if you had typed it, redirecting input. The << tells it to append what you type, until the flag EOF in this case, is read.

Dude, I already know a lot without even noticing. (Isn't this lovely?)
Not really a lot but I know a lot.
Not everything but i know things.

root@ubuntu:/shares/data/__restore# cat <<you_can_use_anything | sha1sum
> Hello there.
> How are you?
> Skipping you_can_use_anything
> because it is not by itself.
> you_can_use_anything you want.
> It MUST be all alone.
> you_can_use_anything

Ok trick question, what does the hyphen at the end of the sum line mean?

@GypsySpellweaver Of the hash?
DON'T TELL ME.

4:45 AM
Yes.
OK

It is usually there when you don't directing give it a file to hash.
44 secs ago, by Henry WH Hack v2.1.1
DON'T TELL ME.
Say:
hashnamesum <filename>
xyz123 - filename
but with something that is not direct like a |.
date | hashnamesum
xyz123 -

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 That one isn't copied correctly. Check it out closer.

@GypsySpellweaver copied correctly?
Wait there is not hyphen.

Expand your mind, sometimes the solution is in front of your eyes.

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 Good advice.

IGU.
I wasn't even thinking.
I was waiting until now.

The answer is:
It is the file name of the input that was hashed.

WHAT!!!???
That was obvious! :'(

5:00 AM
What file is named - ?
5 mins ago, by Henry WH Hack v2.1.1

Expand your mind, sometimes the solution is in front of your eyes.

Is this like *?
I did a cheat and ran cat -
Nothing is happening.
I feel bad.
IGU. (Once again I didn't even think about anything.)

the - is used as the "name" for stdin when used on the command line. For compliant programs that accept a file name for input, the dash means to read the terminal for input as if it was a file, and don't stop until a CTRL-D is typed.
It is cating everything you type
press CTRL-D and the prompt it back

Dude CTRL+C is standard.

CTRL-C is BREAK, CTRL-D is End-of-File

So it is echoing my input. (Not echo as in the command echo but, as in repeating.)

5:06 AM
It reads a like, same as if it was a file, then prints a line, like cat always does.

You can use that trick to quickly create a file, by redirecting the output of cat
cat - > new_file

I was about to say that. :(
Next question please.

BUT remember to use CTRL-D not CTRL-C

Nothing else?

5:10 AM
the first version, with redirected output cat >myfile <<EOF allows a script to create a data file when it needs to.
without doing echo "blah blah" >> my_file 25 times
It looks cleaner in a script and is easier to read as well

@GypsySpellweaver (Dark Voice.) I must get another question! >:)

So, if we go all the way back to where this started, we can replace:
46 mins ago, by Henry WH Hack v2.1.1
echo "<string>" | <hashname>sum
with md5sum - followed by as many lines as needed, and a CTRL-D at the end.

The power of Linux is only limited by the imagination of the user.
M$ users should be so lucky!!

@GypsySpellweaver I already knew that.
Why.

5:16 AM

Question:

For the poor M$ users there is only one way to do most things, and that's Bill's way.
Especially bad when Bill's way don't work. :(

It means that that is the second edit of the two made so far.

Wrong!
@GypsySpellweaver It means it's the third.
You are looking at the wrong number.
Then again:
I should of said.
OK, next question:

5:21 AM
3rd version, but 2nd edit. The first version is not an "edit"

Nope that is the 3rd post I have edited.
It's an editID I add myself.

Oh.
3rd for A51, or your 3rd ever?

Where you fooled?
@GypsySpellweaver For A51.SE

Phew
I thought maybe you had been lazy and only done 3 edits in all your time on SE.

Most are lazy.
Next question:
Why does my profile have:
I cast Close Votes on Area51.SE example questions that needs to be closed. (I was running out of ideas so why not.)
The last sentence.

5:26 AM
Never hurts to add details to a profile if it helps get a point across.

I mean:
"I was running out of ideas so why not."
Why do I have that?

It felt right to put it there when you wrote it.
Asking "why" is often pointless, and "why" seldom matters in the larger picture.

It's because if RC ♦ sees my profile I don't want him to think I am a weirdo trying to be like him so I added that to make it look I am trying to help but with no choice. (So it's a basically for me to tell him I had no choice if he is thinking I am trying to look like him.) (I always think RC ♦ is thinking I am trying to look like him when I do stuff on Area51.SE this is because most of the moderation stuff is done by him so I always assume he is thinking this.
Of course I DON'T emulate anyone I am just using my privileges because I can when needed.
@GypsySpellweaver See?

5:36 AM
Explain what?

What I said.
Next question:

You think that because what you said you do is like what RC does that he might think you're trying to act like, or be like him. I think he's not likely to think that, since many others do the same thing.
I think he probably wishes there were a lot more users willing to "help" and save him some of the work.

I am Privilege Advantageous person which means I will use my privileges when ever possible and when ever needed with no abuse.
Privilege Advantageous. Makes it sound cool.
@GypsySpellweaver So are you making progress with your PC?

I'm seeing if I can compile latest GnuPG on my Ubuntu install.
So far it's working.

I am watching a video on A+.
No reason.

5:48 AM
Is A+ the channel, the site, or the subject?

A+ is an exam.
IT exam.

From CompTIA

Yeah.
3 mins ago, by Henry WH Hack v2.1.1
No reason.

I earned that a few years ago. Used it once.

I learn things for no reason. (Is this bad?)

5:51 AM
There's never "no reason"

There often is "serves no purpose is my life"
Still, you never know when something useless suddenly becomes quite important.

6:22 AM
We have been found out.
I have no clue what is going on.
in The Awkward Silence, 2 mins ago, by Gypsy Spellweaver
Glad you spoke here @HenryWHHackv2.1.1
@GypsySpellweaver ?

You, and your room, were mentioned there. Read back about half a screen or so.

So, I wanted you to be able to "defend" yourself if you choose to, and for that you needed to see it for yourself. Don't mean you have to, but should have the chance at least.

@GypsySpellweaver what?

in The Awkward Silence, 17 mins ago, by D.Hutchinson
@ash @artofcode @catija I was in that teenager room because the bot / human @HenryWHHackv2.1.1 brought me in there once, and I used that room to mostly chat with it / him, as a way to keep distance from other rooms for awhile. A coping mechanism. Please don't let apaul instigate anything. There was no else in that room besides me and Henry. Thanks.

6:35 AM
@GypsySpellweaver I just don't care.

That's your choice. I just like for people to have the choice, rather than blindly plowing ahead and trampling on their options.
I have to start over with my GnuPG install on Ubuntu. It tried to link to older libraries and gave me a fatal error. :(

It was created because I wanted to moderate a room I figured that teenagers are well guys who don't follow the rules so I told myself a time if I can attract a bunch of teens to a room then things will go out of hand allowing me to step in and moderate it in an operation I call "Henry Hack and the Moderation Madman." (Yeah everyone knows I am a person who loves moderation.)
@GypsySpellweaver Do you get that. (IT IS %100 NOT WORKING.)
It was also because of this:

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 Some plans just don't go right.
Life does that sometimes.

in The Classroom, Jun 23 '17 at 17:29, by Aurora0001
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Hate to be the one to steal your thunder, but now we have our moderators it might be best to hand over room ownership to them, as agreed.

I remember that day.

6:53 AM
Yeah. :(
All I wanted to do was moderate.
@GypsySpellweaver:

Yo?
Maybe there just aren't that many teenagers using SE that trust chat rooms.

BTW: It was a bad idea.
I WASN'T GOING TO ABUSE ANYTHING.

Another possibility is that they don't want to be "teenagers" here, they just want to be a regular user, the same as anyone else. No special treatment, and no devaluing their input just because they are younger.

@GypsySpellweaver Start from the beginning:
When AoC linked a message from my room in room #61165.
How did this started?
WHAT IS THE POINT?

Not sure how it started, but maybe Mr. D. ain't 13. He was talking about a teaching position that he may or may not have.

7:07 AM
:O
Shocking.
I am really 15!

13-year-old teacher was a bit auspicious. So they (others in the 61165) started thinking adult in teen room - WHY?

So D went on the defensive and was passing blame around to avoid it himself.
He called this a counseling room. And you did say you brought him here for counseling.

It's a room for chatting with you.
OK it was originally for chatting with Sergiy Kolodyazhnyy.
Jan 2 '17 at 7:22, by Serg
you asked me to invite you into a room yesterday
Oh so that's why this room is here.

Basically it's your room. You can experiment with controls and you don't have to worry about something being "off topic" because there is no topic to be off of. :)

7:14 AM
Fun Fact: I have zero real world friends. :)
No wait, you are real.
I hope.

That's a very common problem for home-schooled people.

I don't really care about friends really.

Real person. But not "real world"

My sleep patten changes a lot.

We'll never meet. Or, if by some strange path of the stars we ended up in the same place at the same time, we'd never even know it. Even if we talked, I'd never know it was you, and you'd never know it was me. Cyberspace and real space seldom connect at all.
@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 So does mine. :(
I thought I was going to be able to go to bed soon, but the Lady is awake again. There goes that chance.

7:33 AM
:(

1 hour later…
8:58 AM
@GypsySpellweaver It is almost time!

Time for what?

Talk to the other guy. (Daily Chat with kenorb.)
From 6-7 or 8 AM.

That would be good.

It is usually shorter than the nighty chat.
If I know correctly you will be going to sleep soon.
@GypsySpellweaver TAILS on a USB stick running on a computer without a hard drive seems good.
I am not sure.
But it's suppose to be a pure live OS only system setup.

9:14 AM
Any OS running on a USB that has not had persistent storage enabled is a good system.
The catch is to trust the builder of the OS

Some say it's better to use TAILS on a bootable DVD.
DVD can be set to read only. (That's the point.)

It would be a lot slower
A USB can be set to read only as well. Some sticks have a physical switch on them.

Yeah there are slower. (Don't have first hand knowledge about bootable CDs.)
@GypsySpellweaver Thanks for reminding me.
Another way of me saying:
I already knew this.
I just wasn't thinking about it at the moment.

The best option, is also the hardest option. Make your own live-boot install.
Since you are used to Ubuntu, start with the Ubuntu installer as a base model, and make it into what you need.

@GypsySpellweaver TAILS is based on Debain so:
THANK GOD in my case!
For some maybe not.
Ubuntu is based on Debain
TAILS is based on Debain
You know one you know the other. (OK NOT REALLY %100 TRUE!)

1 hour later…
10:35 AM
@GypsySpellweaver You are still here?
or
Is it a ghost?

10:51 AM
Still here, more or less. Had to settle a fight with the cats

11:04 AM
It looks like maybe I can get some sleep, if the cats will behave.
Gypsy out
