@kiriloff Neither sentence is correct as it stands. It has to be erspähen würde or erspähte respectively (assuming the verb is erspähen).

That being said, the actual Konjunktiv II form of this verb is identical to the Präteritum (erspähte).

To avoid the confusion arising from this, you usually the construct with würde as a substitute for the actual Konjunktiv II.
