I know "arbeiter" is the usual word for "worker" as well as in phrases like "ich ben arbeiten:, but in things I've read in German I've come across "werk" as a passive verb and if I remember rightly an abstract noun, the concept of "work". I apologize in advance as my German isn't very good.
