Q: Experimenting with Pro Tempore elections

Jon EricsonLast spring, I ran an election on Parenting for a new moderator pro tempore. It went pretty well, so this fall we are going to extend the program to sites that have been in "beta" for years. Here's how it works: We're reaching out to moderator teams to see if they would be interested in partici...

> It went pretty well, so this fall we are going to extend the program to sites that have been in "beta" for years.
> The long-term goal here is to increase democratic participation in all of our sites, break down the barriers between beta and graduated sites and eliminate one community manager task.
> We're reaching out to moderator teams to see if they would be interested in participating. Priority will go to sites with the longest history or that we've identified as having an urgent need. If you are a moderator who would like to nominate your site for an election, feel free to reach out to me. The ultimate goal is to have elections for all sites.

Interesting though I think we got a good moderator team right now

I also think so
but it's not about the mods
its about leaving beta
there it reads that "current mods won't be asked to step down"
only if they ask for such

from what I read this isn't about leaving beta and once we do leave beta the current moderator team would be part of the elections
as would anyone who gets elected as part of this

> Current moderators will not be required to nominate themselves—they will continue as moderators unless they ask to step down.

that is just for the pro tempore ones. If you read the comments a question is asked about current moderators having to be reelected when the site graduates beta and the response is yes

5:55 PM
nope, the comments are talking about the elected pro tempore
the post by Jon, and hte part I quoted, is regarding current mods
Just to be clear here, if the site does graduate, moderators elected as part of a pro-tem election will have to be re-elected to retain their moderator privileges, right? — Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog 17 mins ago
notice the "pro-tem" in the comment

That is what all moderators are considered while the site is in beta

.......

On the blog post about the position they talk about it being provisional until graduation and elections happen which includes any appointed ones.

https://stackoverflow.blog/2010/07/27/moderator-pro-tempore/

Candidates will be contacted and three of them will be selected to act as provisional Moderators until the community holds formal elections after the Beta period. Besides the normal abilities of a Moderator, they will:
That might change with new sites that are launched and hold elections instead of appointed ones

Yeah, but Jon explicitly mentions "Current moderators", referring to the ones currently elected... and then explicitly says that they won't be required to be re-elected, just a "new" set of mods will be sought...
Not sure who of us needs a cup of coffee lol :/

just saw your comment so will get a response on it soon

6:03 PM
yup :)

oh and thanks for finding that official ruling

@JoeW seems that you were right, see Jon's new comment

I looked for a while but couldn't find anything which is why I went with wiki

@JoeW no problem, had to search really thorooughly though, even asked my Judge friends
the Official YGO page is not so... user friendly
@DarkCygnus: Yes. On graduation, all moderators must stand for re-election if they wish to continue in the role. There will be on difference between moderators who ran for an election during beta and moderates we appoint. — Jon Ericson ♦ 1 min ago

and i think reelection makes sense as generally the first time people won't know a lot about the moderators and when it is time for graduation if they are doing a good job it should be easy for them.

makes sense

Q: Is this our chance to "graduate"? Is this something we want?

DarkCygnusJust today I stumbled upon this post: Experimenting with Pro Tempore elections, which seems to be a chance to the ever-lasting situation of still being "beta", and all the pros (and cons?) of "graduating". Extracting parts from it, emphasis mine (still I suggest you read it): Last spring, I...

One thing to remember about graduation (unless they add in a scaling permissions system) is that we would lose a lot of people who could help moderate. For example the vote to close would jump from 500 to 3000 and less then 100 people would be able to do that. That is not counting other things like tag wiki edits

2 hours later…
8:05 PM
We have way more people with high rep than you would generally need to moderate effectively, even with the graduated rep requirements

8:52 PM
The only real obstacle to our graduation is the low rate at which questions are posted to the site, and that hasn't changed in years.

9:10 PM
I didn't intended to say that the permissions changes would be an obstacle
rather that it was something to remember would happen if we did graduate
