@doppelgreener Why did you create a tag just for emblems?

4:28 AM
@murgatroid99 because there are questions specifically about emblems, and it is a taggable thing

I just don't see what makes that a valuable tag

the fact it's doing what a tag does, collecting questions about a topic? if people have questions about how emblem work -- and evidently they do -- they can look in the tag. if we suspect a question is a duplicate -- and we have a near-on duplicate just asked -- a tag means we can check in the questions in that tag.
here's a different question: is the tag doing any harm? is it functionally not doing the job of a tag in some way?

The way I see it, the purpose of a tag is to group an area of expertise, or to group questions in a way people will search for, and I don't see that tag doing either
Or, to put it another way, I don't see the benefit of that tag in particular. Why not [mtg-creatures] and [mtg-sorceries]? Or [mtg-combat]? Or [mtg-stack]? Do we have any criteria for deciding which MTG subtags are useful?

it's also to group the topic of a question to group it with other similar questions: rpg.stackexchange.com/help/tagging, rpg.stackexchange.com/help/privileges/create-tags
@murgatroid99 i'm not tagging those, so evidently i don't see merit in tagging those
my present criteria is "it is a specific thing and people have had distinct questions about the unique functionality of them specifically, and it is not going to be wrapped up in a billion questions nor is it something that almost every MTG question is about" -- those criteria include none of the theoretical tags you just mentioned
that's also why i added , which is for questions specifically about functionality unique to double-faced cards
people get confused about how these things work
it is a thing, it is not a problematic tag. it is a topic area it's worth having grouping in.
Or , because people get confused about how commander damage as a mechanic specifically works
(these are not on every question that happen to involve a DFC, commander damage, or an emblem -- these are on the questions specifically asking about how these mechanics work.)

OK, I can see how that would be useful

Thanks for hearing me out. Are we all good on this state of affairs then?

yeah

cool 👍

FWIW, i don't think "emblems" is the best or most needed tag I've made, though it is something taggable. I want to work on our MTG questions having nearly no subcategories beyond "I'm playing commander".
Most mechanics just don't have distinct questions about them though, or almost every question is about them meaning it's too omnipresent to have tags for.
There seems to be a sweet spot around oddball mechanics that show up infrequently but in more than one set, e.g. we would probably benefit from a Morph tag (I haven't checked) because I'm sure there's a number of questions asking how Morph works and poking at the edges of its functionality
