@MonicaCellio worth a shot
@MonicaCellio @DoubleAA @msh210 Thanks for your moderation

YeZ
1:03 AM
@DoubleAA @MonicaCellio time to remove the pinned announcement of the purim publication?
@DoubleAA probably has the chumros of both.

@DoubleAA PTIJ question for next year. :)

1:55 PM
@IsaacMoses :-)
@Scimonster It says so in M'gila. Even says what city he was the barber in. IIRC.
@Shokhet Thanks.
@Scimonster I'm not sure it does.
@IsaacMoses Can't listen now. Will later IIRC.
@Scimonster One of the miracles during the time of the mikdash, recounted in Avos, is that no one ever complained for lack of place to spend the night in Jerusalem. (Of course, the miracle may have been not that there was room but that no one complained. :-) )

... and now I see others here in chat have beat me to that.
@IsaacMoses If you're referring to the end-of-season closurefest, I didn't help with that this year.

@IsaacMoses @MonicaCellio @DoubleAA What if "Coffee Addict" (on Yeshiva World) is Mi Yodeya's "Alex"?

6:08 PM
@Mr.Bultitude I rejected your edit to Alex's post because our copy is from 2009, while the Yeshiva World post is from 2012. Looks like they plagiarized us.

@Mr.Bultitude @Scimonster Here's the antecedent to "this is what I was referring to" in which Coffee Addict indicates that this is content he found on the Internet: "I googled christianity isn't avoda zara and I got a website (maybe a blog) that quotes the meiri (az 2b and 4b) that states believing in shituf isn't az for goyim and the rema (I can't remember where) agrees with that"
The post at hand is intended to be a quotation, and is just done poorly and without proper referencing.

@IsaacMoses At the very least, someone should explain to CA that we are not a blog.
:)

YeZ
@Scimonster I rejected it because chalila v'chas to besmirch our Alex! (Actually, for the same reason as you did, but hey.)
3

@Mr.Bultitude if "Coffee Addict" is Alex then he is of course free to post his content anywhere he likes -- it's his. Anybody asking them about it should point out the prior post so they can look into it; we don't have enough information to confirm authorship but they presumably can. Or at least they can ask him.

6:29 PM
@Scimonster we have the earlier copy. Their copy might be fumbled quoting or an honest error or knowing copying. Earlier in this conversation I failed to judge favorably and consider the former possibilities, which I regret.

I've posted a corrective message.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses I don't see it.

@YeZ Nor can I in Incognito Mode. I guess posts are pre-screened.
> Please note: The content that Coffee Addict referred to in this post and then quoted, in total, in this post is actually this answer by Alex to the question "Is Christianity Avodah Zarah?" on Mi Yodeya, the online Jewish Q&A community. Mi Yodeya is not a blog or a forum like this one; it features a more structured form of give-and-take centered on questions and answers.

In the future, if you'd like to re-post content from Mi Yodeya here or anywhere else, please feel free to do so, just make sure to provide a link back to where you got it on Mi Yodeya and to the author's profile, in accor
With the links you'd expect in the places you'd expect them, but I'm not in the mood to re-link for chat.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses You omitted that it's a mistaken citation, by the way.

@YeZ ?

YeZ
6:41 PM
@IsaacMoses Alex's original post had a mistaken citation, which was corrected. In that re-posting, it has the original mistake.

>Please note: The content that Coffee Addict referred to in this post and then quoted, in total, in this post is actually this answer by Alex to the question "Is Christianity Avodah Zarah?" on Mi Yodeya, the online Jewish Q&A community. Note also in that the original answer on Mi Yodeya, the final reference has been corrected from "Rema (Darchei Moshe to Yoreh De'ah 156)" to "Rema (Darchei Moshe 2 to Orach Chayim 156)."
Twitter (with creepy global search for "yodeya") FTW:

A: How does sesame oil differ from grapeseed oil?

R KlempnerLogically, you've got to consider the reasons things are considered kitniyos: the item is used to make some kind of flour, the item is grown among chometz species, the item was historically confused with chometz in storage or preparation -- and sometimes, there's just a longstanding minhag that t...

@Scimonster Oops! Sorry, gotta brush up on my attentiveness skills. That's embarrassing.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses well played

@YeZ Thanks.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses ich bin nisht a twitter user - how do you find these things?

6:51 PM
@YeZ In the Hootsuite dashboard that we use to manage the @mi_yodeya Twitter account, I set up a tab that lists all tweets that match the creepy-search yodeya OR judaism.stackexchange OR miyodeya
... which mostly returns times when people link to posts here, which is mostly us. This one was actually a false positive in terms of the intent of this search, but I figured it was worth responding to, anyway

YeZ
@IsaacMoses aha neato. So it's not an outreach strategy then.

@YeZ It partially is. People come across our stuff via Google (or SE HNQ) and then tweet it out, and not even always with a comment to the effect of "Isn't Judaism weird?" When we retweet and/or respond, it potentially reinforces their interest, making them potentially more interested in staying engaged.

@msh210 Oh? Any idea where? (Or should i post that to the main site?)

YeZ
It's shloshim yom kodem l'pesach, and gzeira shava tes vov tes vov, so this seemed appropriate to ask now.

@YeZ Whatever it takes to be able to look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day, man.

YeZ
7:00 PM
@IsaacMoses I'll need a new shaver for that.

@YeZ If you skip it, eventually you'll look like a rebbi.

YeZ
@Scimonster or perhaps rabid. Maybe I can work some froth in there.

I'm trying hard, but I am completely unable to follow what is being said here. Is anyone able to tell if it's nonsense as I suspect or if it's actually some valid argument that I don't understand?

@Daniel Looks pretty nonsensical to me

YeZ
@IsaacMoses and me.
Well, maybe not nonsensical. Just completely unfounded and wishful plays on words.

7:13 PM
@YeZ Once the fallacy count in a wall of text reaches a certain threshold, it gets a chezkas tarfus from me, and I feel comfortable writing the lot off as "nonsense" and moving on.
3

@Daniel Only he is good is a well-known user on Christianity, who spouts that nonsense all the time. He has his own "Decoded Version" of the Bible that he uses and everything. Don't worry about it.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses Yes, I was more just identifying the type of nonsense than arguing about it making any meaningful sense.

@YeZ I had to read it a few times before I realized he was trying to make a play on words. I still don't understand what the point is that he's trying to make
@Mr.Bultitude fair enough. I'll just let it go

@Daniel oh dear. You are far from the first person on the network to encounter that guy's peculiar ideas. Over on C.SE they made a special chat room because he kept derailing the main one with that kind of stuff. As far as I know he never sources any of it; he just asserts that words mean things that only he believes they mean. I do not believe you'll find it productive to continue that conversation.

7:20 PM
If you're curious, he's got his own chat room where he details how he concludes that certain words mean what he thinks they mean, and tries to enlist other people's help in finding the true meaning of other words.

@Mr.Bultitude oh. I must then correct what I said before: he has two rooms. Wasn't there a "sideboard" one created just recently because of this stuff? There was a meta post about it.

YeZ
So if I'm cookey enough I'll get my very own chatroom?

@YeZ There's precedent for that here, too.

7:51 PM
@YeZ you have enough reputation to make your very own chatroom with or without kookiness. Of course, as with all such rooms, getting people to join you in it is an exercise left for the user. :-)

YeZ
@MonicaCellio no no no. I want to be given a chatroom!

@Scimonster HNQ prefers new stuff (though it treats everything under 6 hours new the same)

YeZ
@Scimonster This may be my first non-PTIJ HNQ!

@IsaacMoses That much i knew. It also seems to have only 20 views ATM, but 3 answers totaling 10 votes.

8:00 PM
@YeZ ah. Well, I'm sure if you put your mind to it you can make that happen. :-)

@YeZ I'll bet this one did. Hundreds of views, and many answers soon after it was posted.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses @Scimonster think the network will be sadly disappointed at the lack of silliness of this question? They may have become accustomed to PTIJ.

@YeZ Someone posted that before, but i can't find it ATM.

@Scimonster I did.
@YeZ Maybe this one
@YeZ Probably this one
@YeZ Probably this one

@MonicaCellio Well, yes. The one I just linked is one he created himself some time ago. Recently the mods saw fit (with community approval) to create a specially designated "apologetics" room to keep long-running apologetics and theological discussions out of the site's main chat room.

8:12 PM
@Mr.Bultitude oh, thanks -- hadn't looked into the room you linked and didn't know it was his own creation. I wonder if y'all should make some bots to "talk" with him in those other rooms, to keep him out of the rooms you want to protect. :-)

Feb 25 at 20:02, by Isaac Moses
@YeZ I'll bet some SEians, conditioned to think that Jews on the HNQ are a good for a good laugh, clicked on that one and were wondering what's funny about it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for improvement?

A: How does "getting a heter" work?

NafkaminaIt really depends on the question and severity of the issue at hand ie. Shaas hadchak, money considerations, mental health. But generally, big questions such as medical issues, end of life issues etc. should asked to a world expert on that particular topic. Like medical issues should be asked to ...

9:02 PM
@YeZ We have 18 users whose top-scoring question was PTIJ.

@IsaacMoses Scimonster is counted twice. Also, one or two of the other users are likely sockpuppets, possibly of other users on that list.

YeZ
@Fred no, cnsersmoit is counted twice. scimonster didn't make the list.

@YeZ Pardon me, then. :)

@YeZ Ah, it's been a month. I can go back to my normal name!!

YeZ
@Scimonster And take your hats off?

9:16 PM
@YeZ That too. :)
Nope, another 19 hours.
