@DoubleAA You have far too much faith in humanity.

I'm not happy about the derogatory term in the title of this question. Am I right in thinking that should be edited?

Q: Should we censor the term "goy" when used in English to mean "gentile"?

Isaac MosesThe word "goy", used in an English context, can mean: "Gentile" - colloquially and innocuously "Gentile" - as a disparaging slur (It can also mean "Nation" generically and innocuously in a Hebrew context.) Given that the disparaging usage is, in fact, found ("matzui") in the wild and is, in ...

It is a more pejorative term than "goy," as it's a corruption of the Hebrew word for "vermin." Therefore, this policy ^^^ applies even more so.
... The entire quoted expression would be only marginally less offensive if that word was changed, though.

@IsaacMoses ah, thanks for reminding me of that meta post. Since the term here is way more offensive than "goy" (at least in my community), I think an edit is called for.
@IsaacMoses the idea is pretty offensive, but a question asking about it is different from someone espousing that view on the site. But I'm going to replace that word.

@MonicaCellio Maybe encase the replacement in brackets, since you're dealing with a direct quotation. Also, maybe relegate the offensive quote to the body and reserve the title for a more innocuous, technical expression?

@IsaacMoses I used parens but probably should have used brackets. Care to take a look at my edit and either make or suggest further changes?

@MonicaCellio OK. I gave it a shot.

@IsaacMoses that's much better than my edit. Thank you.

@MonicaCellio NP. Thanks for your work on this. I don't get the closure reason, as stated. Was that just a proxy for "this is offensive and can't be left open without some work?" If so, I'd recommend re-opening.
^^ @DoubleAA?
