@IsaacMoses :)

Hi all :) I have composed (but not saved) an edit to a question which needs a lot of improvement. Could someone please agree to temporarily close it after I save my edit, in order so that we can discuss it here?

You need five close votes, or one moderator vote to close a question.
Why not just discuss it first?

@Shokhet Fair. Let me post the edited question's text here.
Providing wine for Christian ceremonial purposes: allowed or forbidden?
by Rabbi Levi Cash
(edited)
Under Charlemagne in the 8th century and the Carolingian emperors, Jews were official importers of exotic foods from the Holy Land (source: https://books.google.com/books?id=GkzdBDuhoRgC&pg=PA120&q=exotic%20foods); they also provided wine for Christian mass.

What were the halachic issues involved? Food issues? Basar b'chalav? Is it forbidden, in general, to provide wine for use in a Christian religious ceremony?

And, in the end, was it halachically allowed or forbidden for the Jews to provide the wine?

@unforgettableid I guess, that's explicattly forbidden in the first mishnah in the avodah zara

The problem with the question is that it combines both food and wine in one question.

12:09 AM
So how is this different from judaism.stackexchange.com/q/10008/5323 ?

@Shokhet it's my proposed edit to that question
Shouldn't Rabbi Cash (a fairly new user; 91 rep) have posted two separate questions?
And, now that he combined both questions into one, what can we do?

@unforgettableid He probably won't ever be back; he is unregistered, and hasn't been seen since Sep 2011

@Shokhet ah. I stand corrected.

That said, I think we should still respect original intent of the author -- he wanted to know about rabbinic response to the situation with Charlemagne, specifically.....if you want to ask a new question, you could.
Just make sure it's clear how the two questions are distinct from each other.

@Shokhet No, I just want to fix up the original question. But should I really leave both questions combined in one post?

12:21 AM
I don't think the problem with that question is food and wine combined into one.....I think the problem is that no one here know what rabbis said specifically about Charlemagne....see this thread of comment to an answer there:
Re "why does it specifically have to do with the Jews under Charlemagne?": because the question sought "halachic responses to these opportunities [under Charlemagne and the Carolingian emperors]". — msh210 ♦ Nov 6 '12 at 6:40

@Shokhet ah. OK, if I make a new question about the same issues today, should I still combine food and wine into one?

@unforgettableid That's up to you. I think there is definitely room to say that they have separate issues, but I don't see a problem in asking them at the same time.
I don't know Yoreh Deah that well; those that do likely will be able to answer both questions, IMO

12:43 AM
@unforgettableid thx for edit

@havarka np :)

english is not my 1st language

@havarka I guessed so, since you wrote "Pressburg" in your profile. (What country is Pressburg in? Mind to please update your profile to enlighten us? I may have found out once, but have forgotten.)

Slovakia, Eastern Europe

@havarka If you don't mind my asking, what is your first language?

12:47 AM
slovak :D

:) ....I didn't realize that was a language :P
Sorry ;-)

maybe 7 mil people in the whole world speak it :D
less than nyc :D

Ah. I see.

whatever, actually i am pretty happy that i speak it, cause it's pretty hard and was easy for me to learn english and hebrew

NYC has their own dialect. They say things that sound sort of like "cwoffee".

12:49 AM
I remember hearing a shiur on the eiruv in Manhattan and Brooklyn -- the numbers blew my mind :P ....NYC is a BIG place ;-)

@havarka Nice! :)

what languages do you speak?

English first; Hebrew (a little rusty, though); and I can understand Yiddish (a little)

so basically no language :)
english is mother tongue, hebrew is must and yiddish is obvious :)

12:58 AM
Not so obvious; not many people around here even understand Yiddish, when spoken to :)
....but yeah, nothing really amazing, no :)
Do you speak anything besides for Slovak and English?

you said a little :) that what i meant obvious
basic russian

That's more Russian than I speak :)

if a person knows english and hebrew it's sufficent
sufficient

Pretty much, yeah....I would like to learn some more, at one point or another.
But what's holding me back is the same thing that ruined my Hebrew skills: there's no one around to talk to, so anything I learn will just be forgotten immediately :(

that sucks
there are absolutely no people around you who speak hebrew?

1:03 AM
Not really, no.
Everyone's first language is English, and that's what they like to speak.

so? Convince to speak with somebody in Hebrew

I've tried; it doesn't really work like that :P

in our Yeshiva in Germany it did, but we also had a chance to speak to a few hebrew natives

My Hebrew, even unpracticed, is much better than everyone else's -- people don't like to feel stupid, so even if we'd start, they wouldn't feel like continuing for more than five minutes.

it's a really pity

@Shokhet In my (large North American) city, there's one synagogue which acts as a "minyan factory". There are probably 20 minyanim or so per day there. There's a kitchen where there's free coffee, jam, day-old bread, and day-old pastry. Lots of the charity collectors visiting from Israel tend to hang around there. I used to live right nearby. At the time, I would sometimes pray there or hang around in the kitchen. Baruch Hashem, this has helped my Hebrew skills improve a lot.

thumps up!

@havarka I mean, my yeshiva once had someone from Mexico, who learned how to speak English in yeshiva.....one of his chavrusas tried learning with him in Hebrew for a whole seder.....it kinda worked, but they didn't do that again.

but if a person's hebrew is not good, what about his judaism knowledge? :)

@unforgettableid Ah. That's nice :)
@havarka You can know a surprising amount about Judaism without speaking Hebrew; it's just more difficult to get things from original sources (Shulchan Aruch, Rambam, Chumash, etc.)

@Shokhet Also, there's a family in my neighborhood who have an "open house" every week on Friday nights. Everyone is invited, and no reservations are necessary. I sometimes eat there. Israeli charity collectors and other Israeli visitors to Canada also show up. Talking with those visitors, baruch Hashem, has also helped my Hebrew a lot -- since their English normally isn't so good.

1:10 AM
Shokhet i know you can, but not to be able read original sources i couln't manage without it, would feel like invalid
@unforgettableid I did the same thing, at the beginning of my hebrew learning speak with randomly hebrew speakers and slowly improving

@havarka Same
@unforgettableid Yeah, speaking with Hebrew speakers is very important to keeping up the skill.
.....come to think of it, I actually know a few Israelis in the neighborhood....I should speak to them in Hebrew!

that applies to any language

That's true
Don't mind me if I'm drifting in and out of this room -- I'm helping to set up a Chanuka party, and people are starting to show up.....

i do mind, kick them out and chat with me
:D

:)

1:24 AM
@Shokhet Are you handing out copies of [a page of] Chanukah - Mi Yodeya??

@IsaacMoses Not a bad idea....I might; depends if we have printer paper.
.....we might have run out literally 5 minutes ago :P

I am football spock!
@Shokhet I had no idea what this was about, then I saw the edit description so I took a closer look.

@Shokhet I posted this, which is really all I am hoping for answers to. :) If you want to answer a question which is different than mine, feel free to post a question and self-answer.

4:21 AM
@unforgettableid Okay. I'll look into answering it tomorrow; I'm too tired to write a high-quality answer right now.
@YeZ :)
@YeZ You really should have pung @unforgettableid about that one ;-)
....anyhow, I've asked and answered my own question, but I'd love to get more answers, particularly those with a better look at the issue than the one I provided. — Shokhet 8 secs ago

5:19 AM
@msh210 I know it's been a while but.....
@msh210 @all: does belong on this question? ....I would argue that it does, because while it also concerns non-chasidic groups, chasidic groups are explicitly mentioned by the OP as a focus of the question. Additionally, if someone were to be tag-surfing, looking for information about the levush of Chasidim, this question would be that much harder to find.

@Shokhet Where i live there are people to practice Hebrew skills on. :D

@Scimonster :)
@all: Should reroute to instead of ? .....I started looking for menorah questions as research for a question of mine, and typed [menorah] into the search bar.
There are 6.5x the amount of [chanukia] questions than there are [temple] questions; besides the fact that most people simply don't think about the [menorah--in-temple]

4:11 PM
Tied in first with @IsaacMoses again!
18 hats each.

4:27 PM
@Shokhet I think it probably shouldn't be a synonym at all, requiring people to specify.

2 hours later…
6:07 PM
@Sci
@scimonster: How did you get so many?

1 hour later…
7:12 PM
@Superplane I hunt them. (See the hat I'm wearing right now)

7:35 PM
@YeZ that is very bizarre. I'm glad you're having fun with the hats. :-)
@Shokhet I agree with @msh210; it sounds like it's ambiguous and we shouldn't assume either.
Man, if I'd realized I was going to rep-cap last night I would have offered a bounty earlier. :-)

@MonicaCellio Would it be improper to refund it?
@MonicaCellio For a minute i didn't recognize your icon without the iconic mug!

@Scimonster no no, what I mean is that offering a bounty earlier would have dropped my rep below the rep cap so further upvotes (that I instead left on the table) would instead turn into rep for me. :-) And I would never, ever use mod powers to refund my own bounty just because I wanted to redistribute rep -- I'd only do that if there were a strong need to, say, close the question.
Also, this is purely about optimization; I don't obsess over rep, but it makes me sad to see those 0-score events. :-)
(Rep-capping is still pretty rare for me. I realize this happens routinely to others.)
@Scimonster yeah, I've been swapping the "hats" (or shirt and glasses in this case) around, and this one happens to obscure the mug.

@MonicaCellio Ah.

7:50 PM
@Scimonster nice placement of your crossbow and hat.

@MonicaCellio Adjustable hats are awesome. :)
They're also adjustable.

@Scimonster yes, that's a very nice change for this year!

8:51 PM
@IsaacMoses, nice placement on today's hat!

Q: How long do you really need to keep your sideburns?

user8613I've seen multiple sources that seem to indicate that one MUST keep his sideburns to either 1) The bottom of the ear 2) The bottom of the ear cartilage 3) To the jaw bone, around the middle of the ear. When looking this up online, I came across this psak halacha from R' Abadi, in which he indic...

^ This was duped, but I don't think it's a dupe (certainly not to the redirected question).
The question it was redirected to is about the minimum length of the hairs, whereas the new question is about the minimum zone of hair coverage.
Though an answer here is highly relevant.
@Shokhet @Scimonster @YeZ @ShmuelBrin

@Fred Voted to reopen.
Now where's my hat?

@Scimonster To get a hat, don't you have to edit the question before reopening, or something?

@Fred I just did. ;)

@Scimonster Ahh. Wow, hats are surprisingly motivating.
@Scimonster I'm guessing that's why you voted to close in the first place. :)

@Fred Actually no, it's because i thought it was a duplicate. After your clarification, i made an edit, and voted to reopen.

9:29 PM
@Scimonster I know. Just kidding.

@Fred FTR, I voted as too "Psak" oriented

@MonicaCellio science report: if you offer a bounty on a day you hit the rep cap, that doesn't lower your effective rep for the day and let you earn more.

There's the hat!
Putting me all by myself in the #1 slot (19), with @IsaacMoses relegated to #2.

@ShmuelBrin Might that be fixed with an edit asking about the various opinions?

10:14 PM
Guess what i just got. Hats 20 and 21.

10:42 PM
@Scimonster :)

10:53 PM
@Scimonster do you actually have both Android and iOS devices or did you use some sort of emulator? :-)
