@Daniel +1ed
@IsaacMoses care to cast a close vote?
00:31
@Daniel I know, but that's what @StackJudaism said.....
@YEZ I think so. It might even be an MY question if you make it into "where is Havillah?"

@Daniel I added a follow up.

Can someone describe when the tag should be used?
for any non-derasha/non-chazal based chumash question?
01:08
@YEZ Its wiki seems to indicate that it's basically for asking for peshat in the pesukim. I don't think Chazal's explanations thereof would be out of bounds. The actual contents of the tag may not be quite as narrowly circumscribed.

@IsaacMoses I haven't seen it applied so much. For example, does it apply to this question?
By "so much" I mean as much as I would have expected.

@Shokhet Duplicates are valuable. Don't worry; be happy.
@IsaacMoses I know....I'll leave it up so that people can find the question if they search "al hamichya" (phrase not mentioned in other question AFAICT)
@IsaacMoses Thanks for the support, though :)
You know that feeling of major satisfaction when you finally achieve something on a religious level that you have aspired to for a long time
?
@Daniel Mazal tov! :)

@IsaacMoses Thank you.
It feels as good as the first time I was able to learn a line of gemara without help or an artscroll
(which was relatively recently. I was a late starter)
@Daniel Thanks very much for sharing your experience with the rest of us.
@IsaacMoses I'm a little surprised at how happy I got from such a little thing
@Daniel It's not little! Davening properly is extremely valuable!
@IsaacMoses Right, but it feels a little strange that the thing that triggered it was going slower than the rabbi. It's not like that's an objective accomplishment
I've been working on improving my davening for a while

A: Experience-based advice for focusing and slowing down prayers?

DanielI was a major sufferer of the problem you describe, and to be honest, I have not completely cured myself of this; however, there are a few things that I have done recently that have made a huge difference in my level of focus during davening. First of all, the times when I paid the least attenti...

It wasn't like tonight I was much better than I was last night
@Daniel Mazal tov!
@Daniel And learning that last daf doesn't make you that much more knowledgeable than the 174 that came before it. But milestones are there to give us a boost of inspiration.

OK. Gotta go daven Ma'ariv while I'm basking in your inspiration. It'll definitely be higher-quality than it would have been otherwise. Yeyasher kochacha!
@IsaacMoses Fair point
@IsaacMoses I hope so :)
baruch tihyeh
@Shokhet Thanks!

This answer judaism.stackexchange.com/a/47676/759 pung me I presume because I had an active bounty on the question. Good new feature!

@DoubleAA I got the same thing for my bounty on the Mohammed question (Nic posted an answer while my bounty was up)

Shabbes!!!
@ablaze In Israel, it sure is.
Every sentence I say on Friday has to contain the word “Shabbes.”
@ablaze That's one way to maintain awareness :)
@Daniel That is a really awesome answer, @Daniel. I’ve also been really serious about “mashiv haruach” this time because of the drought in CA. I’ve also been doing the thing that ArtScroll suggests about reading a verse of Torah at the end of the Amidah that starts and ends with the letters of your name, and mine is all about drought, so it’s doubly serious.
(would’ve posted that as a comment on the answer itself, but I gotta earn 14 more rep first.)
… Shabbes.

@IsaacMoses Nice! I can do some of that on Sunday.
@ablaze Thanks! You might be interested in checking out the two previous projects in this series, for Pesach and Purim respectively, which you can find at s.tk/miyodeya.

@IsaacMoses I’ll look them both over carefully before I get started. I’m excited to contribute!
Open question: I’m looking for more blogs and podcasts to subscribe to. There are so many wishy washy “Jewish life” ones. I’m talking about Torah study ones. Halakha ones. Ones about the liturgy and the holidays. Media to help me keep learning while I’m washing dishes or sitting on the bus. Any suggestions? (This probably would be out-of-bounds as a Mi Yodeya question, yes?)
21:12
@ablaze in bounds! Make sure to include objective criteria that can be used to evaluate answers. What are you interested in learning?
... See products recommendation tag for similar.
21:38
@IsaacMoses Oh, excellent! Seemed like it was maybe too subjective to ask “Please recommend some blogs and podcasts,” but I can be precise about what I’m looking for. I’m looking for drashot and shiurim, sermons, and scholarly essays, basically.
@IsaacMoses Found this thread in there, which is very good. Not many ongoing podcasts, though. judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/7964/…
22:02
@ablaze you might want to also specify the level of learning -- beginner/intermediate/advanced, degree of fluency in Hebrew/Aramaic, etc.
@MonicaCellio Good call, thank you
@ablaze thank you for helping!
And with that, shabbat shalom all -- just passing through for now. :-)
Here’s my thread: http://judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/47692/what-are-the-most-active-and-educational-religious-podcasts-and-blogs

Gut Shabbes, everybody!
