This is far from ideal (I'd like to identify the orangy-brown that forms the background at the top and use that with dark text), but by way of illustration, plug this into Stylish and then start playing with colors:

Err, only the stuff from .topbar down is related to this; now y'all can see some of the other mods I need to make to be able to view the site more easily.
Part of the reason I kept it dark is that I don't know how -- or if we can -- change the light-gray icons for the inbox and rep-tracker. That's what pushed me to the dark background. You can make this per-site to match different sites' color themes if you want, BTW -- just override .topbar like I did here for Mi Yodeya.
