@ShmuelBrin I think that it will always be a redirect, like crossvalidated.com . For now, I own yodeya.com and miyodeya.com and have both of them and mi.yodeya.com pointing to our site. I have, @msh210, contacted SE about handing over the domains to them.
@Jin, did we lose the propellers?

Jay, welcome to Mi Yodeya, and thanks very much for this answer! You could improve it by [edit]ing in a source. Also, please consider registering your account, which will give you access to more of the site's features. — Isaac Moses 14 secs ago
Need to update meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/190/… , the FAQ, and probably some other stuff.

1:03 AM
@DoubleAA Don't you mean the @HodofHod color?
Am I the only one who would like to see a thicker divider between pinned chat messages and plain starred ones? I kind of ignore the bottom stars, so I never see what new stuff gets starred since the pinned ones make them less obvious. Anyone else have this problem?

1:21 AM
@HodofHod what's the difference between pinned chat messages and normal starred ones?

@ShmuelBrin The pinned ones are non-solid stars. the top three messages to the right side right now are pinned ones. They do not move (at least for a while). I think only room owners or mods can pin messages. Not sure

@Jin you around?
@DoubleAA Since you're here, I want to thank you for helping out with the systematic list of tags, and remind you that it's very important to make sure that tags are spelled correctly, or else they won't link properly.
I'm not saying you don't, I'm saying I just went around correcting a bunch of mistakes. I didn't check whose

@HodofHod I try my best.
@HodofHod No. It's an adjective. I wasn't trying to ping you.

@IsaacMoses Don't those come packaged with google accounts?

@HodofHod lo.yodeya

@IsaacMoses Even if they don't, creating one would be as simple as logging into Google, going to youtube, and clicking yes (or some such)

@HodofHod Yup

Is anyone else having trouble with editing their chat posts in here?

@IsaacMoses Oh yeah, that too!!

Jin
3:01 AM
@IsaacMoses @HodofHod on the homepage, between "Recent Tags" and "Recent Badges" there's a propeller divider.
for sections that have a "box" I didn't put a propeller divider because I feel it's a bit excessive.

@DoubleAA Blessed be He who directed me to think along similar lines to you

Jin
I'll be looking for other sidebar sections where propeller is appropriate.
I can already see on the single view, between "Linked" and "Related" sections there should be a propeller, but isn't

@Jin Gotcha. On that, I'm not sure I love the boxes

@Jin Between "Linked" and "Related" questions lists on question pages

Jin
I used our dev server to develop the css, but not all the content is available there, so I missed a few places I'm sure. I'll be adding it(propeller) where fits

3:03 AM
@Jin Btw, it's very difficult to distinguish between main and meta favicons

Jin
@HodofHod ok. i'll tweak the favicons. as I mentioned earlier, I may have to redo the favicons from scratch.
@IsaacMoses btw, we styled twitter.com/stackjudaism

@Jin Would it be possible to use it for the horizontal lines in the body of the question page? What about for regular <HR>s?

Jin
you have access to twitter.com/#!/mi_yodeya right?

@Jin I saw. Nice!

@Jin Right, just thought I'd mention so you would ahve that in mind

3:04 AM
@Jin I own it. I've offered to turn it over to SE.

@IsaacMoses if you like, you can use the same images to style it for now.

you can set all that in the design control panel
@IsaacMoses I talked to the community team about the twitter takeover, they haven't decided yet.

@Jin Not urgent.

Jin
I think the thinking is that, it makes no sense to have 2 twitter accounts(stackjudaism and mi_yodeya) for the same site. I'll let them decide.

3:10 AM
@Jin Sounds good.
@Jin Has there been any talk about domains?
@Jin Done

Jin
@IsaacMoses I haven't talked to the community team about it yet. it's really their call. you can ping robert about that

@Jin I emailed community@ Again, not urgent.

Jin
@IsaacMoses btw since the launch party is a bit further down the road, we have some time to prepare for promotional material, if you need me. just let me know.

@Jin Thanks! We will. First, we have to see if we can line up some headliners.

3:23 AM
@DoubleAA I'm inclined to say no, but I need to look at the two questions more carefully later.

Jin
@MonicaCellio I have updated main site's voting arrow/favstar/answer's on-state image sprite for better high contrast mode. you should see the change tomorrow morning. may require a hard refresh.

@ShmuelBrin @Jin apparently we got our own special set of privilege levels!

why does the order of privileges change from Beta to release?

So never mind, @Jin it's already been done. I want to thank whoever was responsible for the lower levels, though

Jin
3:49 AM
@HodofHod I think it's because Mi Yodeya existed as a SE1.0 site before, it had its community pre-SE2.0 beta already?
I'm not 100% certain, just a guess.

In beta, the highest privilege is trusted user, then protect questions.

@Jin There was an element of that that was actually an oversight, apparently:

A: Why can't I edit posts on meta?

@ShmuelBrin Certain privileges are more necessary on beta sites
perhaps?

In release, trusted user is higher.

@IsaacMoses No! That's disappointing
@Jin perhaps another place for propellers would be on the right side of question pages, between the "Tagged" section and the questions stats

@HodofHod good idea. i'll add it

@HodofHod we won't have stats anymore :(

@Jin I know. I was just pointing this out

oh yes. you can also view the site stats on stackexchange.com/sites

@Jin whats your thought on a propeller between "Linked" and "Related" sections?

@HodofHod i'll add it. i think it's a good place. however there's not a css hook in the html as of now, I'll need to ask the devs to make some html changes

@Jin nice!!

most side bar sections have IDs, e.g. <div class="module" ID="chat-feature"> etc
but Linked and Related sections don't have IDs yet. so I can't style it just yet

Q: Should we populate Shut on this site?

Shmuel Brin(Almost) by definition, questions found in Shut are the ultimate "on-scope" questions. Should we populate questions with Shut (like start with Be'er Moshe [Igros Moshe forbade translations of his Shut] vol.1 siman 1 and continue)?

@DoubleAA if you reload that should be fixed now (/cc @Jin)

Anyone object to my replacing the current ad with this:
?

@DoubleAA Hmm, I feel like this ad (as well as the old one) no longer fit with our new "classier" theme. Perhaps time for a new one? (If I'm stepping on anyone's toes, I'm very sorry, I didn't mean it.)

@HodofHod Definitely not my toes! I still think we should replace the color scheme at least temporarily while we design a new one. The light blue stands out too much לע"ד.

@DoubleAA agreed
since we're all here, has anybody else had this problem:

4:07 PM
@HodofHod The outlined versus solid distinction is plenty for me.

@HodofHod I can't say it bugs me much. Not that your alternative would bug me much either.
@msh210 Any thoughts on the ad switch?

@DoubleAA It would bug me slightly just because it would slightly reduce the number of starred posts visible (already not many).
@DoubleAA I'm the one who suggested it:
Can the color be updated to better match the site? Should it? — msh210 21 hours ago

@msh210 I agree.

4:16 PM
@msh210 a thicker dividing line wouldn't reduce the number of visible stars
@msh210 Agreed, if I ever post it in meta, I'll use that.

@HodofHod I was referring to the post I linked to with the word "this" (here linked to again).

@RebeccaChernoff thank you for our board back!

@HodofHod Wouldn't it lower all the stars that appear beneath it, leaving less room for them?

4:21 PM
@msh210 Whoops! Totally missed that was linked. Unfortunately, mouseover highlights my last post, which was on the divider

@HodofHod Ah. Yes.

@RebeccaChernoff True, False = False, True
True == False
>> True
@msh210 I don't think so. A slightly thicker line? It would only be a couple extra pixels.
@msh210 Hm, I think bug fits, since it's undoubtedly an undesirable and unintended behavior

@HodofHod ...which will sometimes be sufficient to move one post off-screen. Note my boldfacing of "slightly", and repitiition of that word.
@HodofHod I'm not sure it's undesirable or unintended, but feel free to revert my edit of course.

@msh210 I doubt 2 or 3 extra pixels will push off a message, although IANAD
@msh210 btw, if you have a sec, would you mind putting up a screengrab of the behavior on that meta post? I don't want to trouble you, though

4:38 PM
@HodofHod Done.

@msh210 Thank you!

@HodofHod You're welcome.

@hodofhod - I created the speech-balloons ad (although @IsaacMoses designed it, if I remember right). I completely agree that it'll stick out like a sore thumb with the new theme.
The new coloring is a start, let me think about how to improve the ad.

@NeilFein Thank you so much! Both for the old one, and for thinking about how to improve it now :D

I think the color is a bit too red now, but that's a detail.

4:47 PM
Btw, @NeilFein out of curiousity, did someone ping you here?

A reply on the ad itself in meta pinged me.
...that linked to the discussion above. meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/a/586/647
It's CW now, but I'm still the originator.

@NeilFein Ah, cool.
Btw, I need a guinea pig for testing a weird behavior; any volunteers?

@NeilFein ...which is why I commented.
@HodofHod Will it involve injections?

@Jin - You around? I'm redoing a community ad in illustrator now. Would it be possible for you to get me the art for the borders on the "love this site?" and "community bulletin" widgets?
(Hey, I spelled "bulletin" correctly. Yay!)

@NeilFein Community bulletin is cdn.sstatic.net/judaism/img/bg-fancyborder.png
(Thank you, Firebug.)
@NeilFein They seem to be the same, no?

4:55 PM
@msh210 - Actually, the first one's background is pale orange when I bring it into Illustrator. The second one has the "love this site" headline, but I can blank that out for now.
I'm doing a quick version, the same text in a nicer font.

@msh210 NO. All you need is 3 bottles of ketchup, one starbucks coffee (pike place roast) three white rhesus monkeys, 2 rats and one Bugatti. You have those lying around, don't you?
@msh210 Ah, Chrome has that built in. Gotta love it

I hate adobe illustrator

@Jin - What font are you using on the sidebar? Palatino?
The closest I can find is Baskerville, but the caps descend too far. (That question mark is a slightly odd one.)

@NeilFein What browser are you using?

@HodofHod FF has something like it built in now, too, but I haven't bothered figuring it out, since I'm used to Firebug. :-)

Chrome, but I'm not working in Chrome.

5:04 PM
@HodofHod :-)

Working in Illustrator, and will export a PNG when I'm done.
Did I mention that I hate Illustrator?

@NeilFein if you want to know what fonts: right click anywhere on the page, click on "inspect element", then click on "resources". in the search bar write "font-family" hit enter
@msh210 if you have time: favorite two related tags: go to the tag page of one of them. The questions should all be non-highlighted _except for those that also have a second favorited tag. I wonder if that's intended?

@HodofHod I would assume so. That sounds like ideal behavior to me.

@msh210 I guess. It took me a while to figure out what it was doing though. I issued the call before I "chapped"

5:19 PM
@Dave I can read it. Let me know if you want me to.

@HodofHod - This is really boring, but I suppose it'll do until I can get the actual border artwork from Jin. I think the type is off as well, not sure what typeface he's using here.
Any typos? Had to retype the text since Adobe Illustrator is a nasty, nasty co-worker today.

Q: Parashat Hashavua' Chat

Isaac MosesOur first Parashat Hashavua' (weekly Torah portion) Chat, despite the fact that it was advertised only minimally, turned out to be a lively, interesting discussion. So, why not do it again every week? Where: The Judaism.SE chat room When: Wednesdays at 17:30 UTC (19:30 in Israel; 12:30 in New Y...

@NeilFein You may also wish to change the background color to match the site (unless that's transparency and it's just not showing up here)

Anyone have something to start us off with?
Ok...How about: why are all the Moadim (holidays) mentioned here in Emor right among all the Temple oriented laws, especially if this listing omits the most Temple-oriented aspect of the holidays: the Korban Mussaf (which is found in Parshat Pinchas)?

@NeilFein The typeface for the Community Bulletin is Georgia. Which typeface were you trying to emulate?

@DoubleAA In a way, actually, I'd say they're sort of a new section of laws - ones that apply only in Eretz Yisrael (see Menachos 4:3) - and then it continues with Shemittah and Yovel. Except that wouldn't explain what ch. 24, about the menorah, lechem hapanim and the blasphemer is doing in between.

@Alex Also Erchin, Temura and Maaser Behema at the end. Those revert back to the Temple theme.

5:47 PM
In (perhaps temporary) absence of further discussion on that topic, allow me to ask about 25:8: what's with the repetition? Count seven weeks of years: seven sevens of years. Those seven weeks of years will be forty-nine years for you.
Rashi explains the second half (presumably quoting some midrash halacha), but the first half is itself repetitive.
Again, Rashi explains why it can't say only "count seven weeks of years" (though I'm not sure I get his reasoning), but it presumably could say only "count seven sevens of years".

@msh210 Sounds reminiscent of the weeks/days situation by sefirat haomer.
It needs to tell us to count each year, and to count each group of seven years.

@DoubleAA Is that a mitzva? If so, is it from this pasuk?

@Vram Welcome!
2
@msh210 Chinuch #330

@DoubleAA Also, maybe without it saying שבע שבתות שנים (where שבתות has the dual meaning "weeks" and "Shabbasos") we'd think that shemittah isn't necessarily every seventh year, just that there's years 1-6, then shemittah, then 49 years (with no shemittos) and then yovel. Adding those words clarifies that each group of seven years has to have a Shabbos.

@Alex 42, you mean, I think, but, yeah, plausible.

5:57 PM
@Alex Maybe, but I think that Hava Amina would be a weak pshat.
It just said 6&1 and now it tells you to count in groups of 7. That doesn't sound like much of a coincidence.

@DoubleAA It's also an odd hava amina to suppose that there should be seven shemittos consecutively (Rashi quoting Toras Kohanim).

@Alex Yes, I thought so, too.

Returning to the discussion earlier about what Parshas Hamoados is doing here: I see where Sforno (to 23:2) says that Shabbos and the holidays, like the korbanos discussed in ch. 22 (and earlier chapters), are meant to cause the shechinah to rest among us. So it mainly focuses on them being מקראי קדש, "called times" for Torah study, and not so much on the korbanos (so that we don't get the mistaken impression that those are paramount).
In that case, then, maybe we can say that the entire section from chs. 18-23, at least, is on this topic: being holy so that the shechinah can rest on us. (Then follows the part about the menorah, which as Rashi to 24:3 says is "testimony to the world" that this is indeed the case.)

What a great avatar @Alex.

@Gigili Thanks.

6:21 PM
I think I'm going to pack it in early - big day tomorrow, bez"h.

Isaac MosesWe've discussed naming our chat room before, but never came to a conclusion. @NeilFein Should "Chat" be boldfaced?

@HodofHod @ShmuelBrin @DoubleAA - changes?
I think it could go either way.

@NeilFein Okay, whatever you think.

The whole thing is extremely understated, in keeping with the theme.
Should I upload this to replace the old ad, or do a new community ad?

@NeilFein Same wording as the old one (or close enough)... I'm tending hesitantly toward replacement. What do others think?

6:52 PM
@msh210 Replacement sounds easiest.

@DoubleAA Easiest yes. My only concern is that people voted for the other who might not like this one: it's stealing their votes, in a sense, to replace the ad.

That's my concern.
It's one thing when an ad is continually updated, like this one.
But people here are, I suspect, more sensitive to the site's design.

@NeilFein So make a new one. It'll get votes. (And people should demote the old once the new has sufficiently many votes.)

7:08 PM
@NeilFein +1

@msh210 @msh210 It would be an honor!

@Dave ...mine. Forward me the text (and any instructions)

@msh210 Thanks, I'll let you know when it's ready. (Knowing me, it probably won't get done anytime soon unless you badger and/or threaten me.)
