@mattwilkie I'm with you that time spent by a moderator (with or without the diamond) is not nearly as important as what they do with the time they find themselves able to volunteer here. When deciding where to place my 3 votes (we all get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd to cast) next week I'll be looking for the candidates who I think "get" the way the SE model works: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/244534 (first two sections)
Good Stack Overflow Citizen by Jeff Atwood (its co-founder) is something that I think every prospective moderator (if not every serious user of every SE site) should try to find time to watch some time.
It goes for an hour but I think really helps place the SE sites in context to the rest of the Q&A sites, discussion forums, etc.

Getting out of a forum mindset of getting a solution to my problem and the back and forth until suddenly it works, and into a set question and answer format took me a little while to get used to but does make so much sense, particularly when considering how the same Q&A can help more than just the original asker.
that link posted by @PolyGeo is definitely worth a read - meta.stackexchange.com/questions/244534
