This is a very famous ongoing discussion within the (at least American) world of scholarly music theory. I'd be curious to hear what people think, if anyone has the time or interest to read it.

@Richard Music theory intro classes do tend to have a very European centrist material. I was lucky to have a wide array of theory teachers throughout college and high school of many different backgrounds so I feel like I got a rounded sampling more than most would.

I don't think I have much to add to this discussion since I only minored in music theory and composition and currently I'm only really performing.

The one thing I will add is working with many bands a majority of the musicians I work with are African Americans and it never seemed to reflect in music classes in general in college or high school. Although I cannot say if it was the material or the American school system in general.
