About your water tank, in the early days of computing, one early form of memory was a long trough filled with mercury, with an ultrasonic transducer at one end. The signal would be fed into the ultrasonic transducer, which would make a wave in the mercury. The wave would travel down the trough, reflect off the far end, and all the way back, arriving back at the transducer.
