A nice read about LaTeX on a meta-level (article about the lwarp package): https://bdtechconcepts.com/portfolio/lwarp_paper.pdf

"meta" meaning "Why LaTeX, Why convert LATEX to HTML" etc.

12:57 AM
Does anybody in this chat have an opinion on this book?

A: What are good learning resources for a LaTeX beginner?

ShreevatsaRGrätzer's under-appreciated book is excellent, especially at showing you how to do things the "right" way: George Grätzer (2016), More Math Into LaTeX, 5th edition, Springer, ISBN 978-3-319-23796-1 (Earlier editions were called "Math into LaTeX"; it's not a sequel.) Especially if you're learn...

@PauloCereda ooh another duck

@CarLaTeX ooh
Meeting Bär in a week, but I cannot tell anything because we ducks are very good at keeping secrets

@PauloCereda ooh

@Dr.ManuelKuehner I just downloaded the book, but I do not really have an opinion on it. I guess it is fine, but it might depend on what you are after as well.

11:21 AM
@PauloCereda didn't hear no nothing about it, you kept the secret!

@Skillmon ooh success

11:37 AM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner Browsed it a bit. A lot more than just math.Im not sure of ot is updated regarding modern approaches and packages. The copy I downloaded was from 2016 or so.

@PauloCereda still not eaten by kaiman and piranhas but still no email either.

@UlrikeFischer ooh have you seen any toucans?

12:32 PM
@Rmano hi mr. squirrel!

@PauloCereda Or any dodos...

@PauloCereda 'morning mr. duck!

@mickep dodos aren't extinct, they are just very good at hiding

@PauloCereda eggstremely

@mickep :)
@Rmano ooh

@Dr.ManuelKuehner -- Biased opinion here. Grätzer's book(s) are based on the AMS document classes as well as on amsmath, Whenever he had any questions as to whether something was accurate, he checked, and followed our recommendations. I have found his explanations clear, and used some of them myself in answering authors' questions.

3:18 PM
@UlrikeFischer quack <3

@PauloCereda just a bit internet ...

@UlrikeFischer yay

@UlrikeFischer -- I hope you (1) are having a wonderful time, and (2) have a camera and are using it.

@PauloCereda But I can't reach German sites - I hope it still exists :-)

@UlrikeFischer oh nein :)

3:32 PM
@barbarabeeton we have a wonderful time, but we are not of the photographing sort of people. But Bär tried to imitate a sloth and made friend with a small wood duck

@barbarabeeton you got a secret duck mail. :)

4:02 PM
@UlrikeFischer it is still there, just checked :)

@barbarabeeton It doesn't look like anything else I've seen that uses the ams classes. But maybe content-wise it is based on AMS, if that is what you mean?
There was also a lot of test files to download. Together with some small film clips.

@mickep -- Yes, content-wise. It is definitely AMS-centric. I haven't really looked at any of this since I retired. amsmath has changed some since it was published, and amsmath was turned over to the LaTeX team the same year it was published, but the document classes changed only glacially while I was involved with them, and (although I don't know directly), I doubt there have been any drastic changes since.

5:09 PM
@barbarabeeton Does that even work? Normally \\ triggers a no line to end here error.

@HenriMenke -- Oh, `\` can trigger other errors too, In vertical mode, it will trigger the error you cite, but from horizontal mode I've more often seen "underfull box" (warning, not error, but usually not wanted), Or maybe you meant something else?

@barbarabeeton ok,I see. Maybe he used some ams class but also changed a lot of things like headings, fonts, ... so that it no longer looks like one is used to.

5:27 PM
@mickep -- I'll take another look when I liberate my library from boxes. (Sigh. Boxes. Actual cardboard boxes.)

@barbarabeeton Yes, indeed. I meant \\ \\

@HenriMenke -- Just tested. xxx \\ \` produces two "Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines ...". After a par, \\ \` produces (two) "! LaTeX Error: There's no line here to end."
@HenriMenke -- That should, in both cases, be two backslashes separated by a single space. (I will never master the input conventions of this chat.)

1 hour later…
7:07 PM
@mickep Thanks for the follow-up!
@barbarabeeton Thanks! I basically know nothing about the AMS document classes, I was assuming they are no longer maintained.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner -- Oh, they're maintained! (Slowly ...) If an author wants to be published in an AMS journal or book series, it will be with an AMS document class. Before I retired, there were updates to those classes that were only internal, not yet released publicly. I'm out of the loop now, but I doubt much has changed. When I left, there was a backlog of reports and requests. When I see a report in these questions, I still forward it.

7:37 PM
@barbarabeeton Ah, didn't know that! Hopefully, the updates will be pubölicly available at some point.

2 hours later…
9:26 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner Don't worry, we had access via work. If you wonder about anything on the book, just ask.

2 hours later…
11:20 PM
@PauloCereda We saw two tucans far away but more importantly: we saw a sloth! It fell into our boat, made a foto session and then climbed back on a tree.
