@user2646 Seems you do not yet know about tikzmarmots. They are really wild. ;-)

Morning all

9:05 AM
Interface question: I'm working on siunitx v3, and am wondering about the current \SI{1 x 2}}{\metre}. With hindsight, I suspect this should have a separate command, in the same way \SIrange/\SIlist work. So (with current names) \SIproduct?
I'm also wondering about the current quotient support: \num{1/2} and so on. Does that constitute a single 'number'? ... I have a feeling it does, but that makes life complicated ...

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@JosephWright is {1 x 2}}{\metre} 2m or 2m^2 (you can tell I don't use the existing interface:-)

@DavidCarlisle It's 1\,\mathrm{m} \times 2\,\mathrm{m} :)

9:23 AM
@JosephWright ah so I suppose technically any operator in the middle would work but just product and division make sense in practice? using something that looks like an arbitrary expression probably isn't right if it only works for a \times b ...

@DavidCarlisle It's for the case where you want to say something like 'The room is 1m x 2m', which actually suggests it should be separate: one could I guess say '1m by 2m' or similar
@DavidCarlisle Division is a bit different: I added it to support fractions, basically
@DavidCarlisle What I could do with fractions is treat them as expressions, convert to a number then convert back ... would avoid needing more complex storage internally

@JosephWright yes I see the use, but the syntax suggests \SI{a+ \sqrt{\sum_i^n }{x^i}}{\metre} might do something useful, which I assume it doesn't

@DavidCarlisle I'm trying to get v3 finished, and this 'top level glue' stuff is what is outstanding. I'm hoping that v3 will address some of the conceptual issues in v2 ..

@JosephWright s/v/L/ :-)

@JosephWright did you managed to use a "lualatex53" on texlive? I made a format and kpsewhich --all -engine=luatex53 lualatex53.fmt reports hits in /texmf-var/web2c/luatex53/ but when I run luatex53 --fmt=lualatex53 test-utf8 it recreates the format and then claims it can't find it ...

9:28 AM
@DavidCarlisle :)

@UlrikeFischer I built one earlier, but from my own compilation not the texlive binary, I could try again..

@DavidCarlisle I think having talked it through I know what makes sense: thanks
@UlrikeFischer Haven't tried recently

@DavidCarlisle I used lualatex53 luatex53 language.dat,language.dat.lua lualatex.ini in the fmutil.cnf. I don't want to switch completly, I only want a "parallel test engine".

@JosephWright glad to have played the part of the rubber duck in that design session.

@DavidCarlisle Cool
@DavidCarlisle /Quack

9:35 AM
@JosephWright quack

@PauloCereda Quaaaack quack quack quaaaaaaack

@JosephWright ooh

@UlrikeFischer When I've done it, I've simply swapped my luatex.dll and rebuilt formats manually ...

@PauloCereda @JosephWright So nice having some quacking in chat again :)

@DavidCarlisle Not unless you turn off the parser

9:39 AM
@UlrikeFischer not sure about fmtutil config, didn't try but in an empty directory this works:
luatex53 --ini lualatex.ini
mv lualatex.fmt lualatex53.fmt
luatex53 --fmt lualatex53 sample2e

@UlrikeFischer You free on Thursday at 14:00 CET?

@DavidCarlisle yes when I copy the format to the current directory it works fine. It only don't find it in the "engine" folder. I think I will have to ask on the texlive list.

@UlrikeFischer which engine dir did you put it in?

10:02 AM
@DavidCarlisle the fmtutil line put it in web2c/luatex53

@UlrikeFischer I had a quick look at the sources and i suspect engine is set to luatex (I didn't follow the full thing)

@JosephWright I noticed that a user has several "Missing \begin{document}" errors within packages (hyperref, pd1enc.def, geometry, others) that are the newest versions, hyperref and geometry are up to date. It's a beamer document. Do you have seen such messages? Link: latex.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=31878 Log file is attached there.

@StefanKottwitz sigh looks like incompatible with geopmetry and hyperref? since both of those are with me I suppose I should try to reproduce....
@StefanKottwitz a full log is there but is there a test file?

@DavidCarlisle probably something like this. Well I asked on the texlive list....
@JosephWright Yes, should work. in the hope that 14.00 is my 14.00 (it is now 12.00 here)

@UlrikeFischer I think engine is supposed to be luatex because it's planned to be luatex just has a different name this time round for testing in parallel with luatex52

10:20 AM
@StefanKottwitz I suspect this is a "spaces in filenames" issue or perhaps "non ascii characters in filenames" I made a small beamer test file and had identical log up to the point that log file tried to typeset ady/symiprogprzeds/wersjanarokakad1819/niestacjonarne/"geometry.cfg before \begin{document} which looks like a failure to input a config file.

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! I already asked the user to post a test file.

@StefanKottwitz I suspect a file like this is enough but with a space in the current directory name or something else confusing geometry loading a cfg file, as the log I got from this was the same up to the error.
\documentclass{beamer}
\usepackage{geometry}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}
\begin{document}

\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer Yes: one hour ahead of me

@DavidCarlisle Thanks, looks like an issue in the url package (version of that user). Perhaps see my update at latex.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=107046#p107046

10:39 AM
@JosephWright So if were to meat at 13.00 CET today it would be 20 minutes?

@StefanKottwitz I don't think so url is loaded much later and latex is pretty well confused well before then it has started typeseting code that is intended to be executed, probably because utf8x has messed up " or ~ or something

@DavidCarlisle I managed to get it working with fmtutil-sys --byfmt=lualatex53 --fmtdir=C:\texlive\2018\texmf-var\web2c\luatex --no-engine-subdir

@UlrikeFischer Yes

@UlrikeFischer all those funky options. I thought using --fmt instead of \& was already pretty novel.

@JosephWright ok. And who explains the technical side to me?

10:41 AM
@UlrikeFischer That would be me
@UlrikeFischer We use Google Hangouts: I'll send a link around
@UlrikeFischer It only works reliably in Chrome at the moment ...

@DavidCarlisle ;-). Simply copying the fmt would work too ...

@UlrikeFischer I just replied on list saying that

@DavidCarlisle ;-) but manual copying is so boring ...

@UlrikeFischer if you don't use hangouts regularly you might want to practice setup with one of us first it can be quite temperamental (and just changed a lot and changed its name from hangouts to google meet or some such:-) (we use voice only and have video off)

@DavidCarlisle ooh

10:50 AM
@DavidCarlisle I never used hangouts in my life so I certainly will need a practice setting ;-).

@UlrikeFischer it works well enough once it has worked out if you have a headset or using the laptop speakers etc, but unlike skype there is no "test call" you can try so it's hard to know if it's all working without actually contacting someone:-) It used to work in most browsers but google "improved" it and now it basically only works in chrome.

@DavidCarlisle as I didn't use skype either ... But I now have to cook something first ...

@UlrikeFischer duck?

@DavidCarlisle fried rice with chicken

@UlrikeFischer close enough relative:-)

11:00 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh no

2 hours later…
1:02 PM
@JosephWright ok I have now chrome and hangout. And I found you and tried to sent a "chat invitation". Did this work? And which mail address do you see from me?

@UlrikeFischer I added you to the invite list using you troubleshooting-tex.de address ....

@JosephWright that is not the original address in my google account. But I know tried to add it. Can you find it in hangout? And did you got my invitation?

1:25 PM
@UlrikeFischer I've not had anything from you ...

@JosephWright ;-(. And can you find me by my email in the hangouts windows?

@UlrikeFischer I can find you with the troubleshooting-tex.de address ...

1:47 PM
@JosephWright and how do we now get in contact?

2:17 PM
@UlrikeFischer you should have an invite from me as well
@UlrikeFischer using the address you used on the luatex53 question

@DavidCarlisle you weren't there ;-). But I tried now a chat invitation ...

@UlrikeFischer chrome is saying I'll be able to chat once you accept the invite

@DavidCarlisle that is what it is my telling too. I'm waiting that you accept. But where is the invitation that I should accept??

@UlrikeFischer by mail I would guess (I just clicked your name as new contact in the chat interface and it said it sent an invite)

2:32 PM
@DavidCarlisle I see nothing. I will sign out everywhere and try anew. Perhaps something needs a restart ....

vlg
@DavidCarlisle You mentioned days back that boxes 0-9 were for scratch, for user use, or thelike. I opened the .log and say there were >350 '\count's. How do I know what I can use, so as to not overwrite sth? Is 0-9 again?

@vlg yes except 0 is the page number and they will all show in the log as [1.2.3.4] if non-zero on \shipout but why not use \newcount and allocate yourself some (and \newbox) the scratch registers were useful in classic tex as ther ther were only 256 registers so re-using the scratch ones was important but in etex there are 32 thousand of each type so avoiding allocation doesn't really have any benefit.

vlg
Didn't come to mind to allocate an unused one.
It should wokr like the newwrite/newread ones right, a simple subst?

3:00 PM
@vlg yes it's same allocation macro actually

3:17 PM
@DavidCarlisle doesn't seem to work. The only invitation I got was the one for the meeting. And I can't send you a new invitation. Can you perhaps look if you got mine under another address? My google-account address is dead old, and not much used. Something with "nililand" should be me.

3:28 PM
@UlrikeFischer that's the one I sent the invite to.
@UlrikeFischer found your invite...

@DavidCarlisle Hurra.

works:-)

@DavidCarlisle looks so, but it is a bit confusing ... It is telling me that I missed your call ;-)

@UlrikeFischer yes there were two calls,the first one lasted half a second, and you missed it: so slow!

@DavidCarlisle ah ;-). In the invitation link for thursday it is asking me "if I want to take part". Should I confirm this now or this for shortly before the meeting?

3:44 PM
@UlrikeFischer either, if you have a google calendar it'll add itself to that and ping you a reminder just before if you accept now, and it alerts @JosephWright to the fact that you intend to attend, it doesn't actually affect the connection, either way you just follow the link at the time.

@DavidCarlisle I clicked on it and now it is turning and telling me that I can take part if someone allows it to me. Can you explain @JosephWright how you found my invite? The old google address could perhaps affect other things too.

@UlrikeFischer I just added you using the address I have in my address book ... as @DavidCarlisle says, in the end, I can 'let in' whoever asks

@JosephWright I'll forward the address that worked with me

4:37 PM
@DavidCarlisle Trying that one

@JosephWright I think you tried the wrong one ;-).

@UlrikeFischer Will try the other one

5:28 PM
@AlexG Would you mind to write an answer here? (The OP asked me to write an answer, but this clearly would be a farce.)

1 hour later…
6:54 PM
@UlrikeFischer Working now?

7:32 PM
@JosephWright I'm not sure. I got the invitation and the link. But I'm not sure what it should show/do now (if it should do anything). I see a button which tells me that I can ask to be allowed access.

8:27 PM
@UlrikeFischer That should be enough

@JosephWright If you have time you could sent me an invitation for tomorrow afternoon or evening. Then we could run a test.

@UlrikeFischer Sure: will do

8:58 PM
@JosephWright got it.

3 hours later…
11:46 PM
Does anyone here have experience using lambda.sty? I'm having trouble defining some new commands with it.
The package implements a lot of useful functions in Lambda Calculus (cons, foldr, isempty, etc.). I'm trying to use the lists it creates and perform operations on these lists, but I'm having errors like "Runaway argument?".
