@ChristianHupfer I hesitated, since I'm very late for this, but I surely have interest and now I added a late nomination.

8:15 AM
@JosephWright No, thanks for the link! I'll investigate...

@topskip No problem

1 hour later…
9:22 AM
@topskip: Pat! <3

@PauloCereda Paulo!

@topskip I'm working very hard, so there's a chance for me to attend this year's TUG in Germany! :)

@PauloCereda I might be there as well, but it well be shortly before my new child is expected...

@topskip ooh congrats! :)

@PauloCereda thanks! (/me is happy about that)

yo'
9:34 AM
@PauloCereda See how useful my new nickname is (I refer to the macro naming convention): tex.stackexchange.com/a/223255/11002

@yo' I'll be in Prague in one month. Hope it's not that cold...

yo'
@topskip I won't ... :-/
usually it's around zero and quite dry in February...

@yo' LOL

@yo' I thought so. I'll be visiting xmlprague (xmlprague.cz) with lot's ex-TeX-users/programmers

yo'
@PauloCereda :)

9:39 AM
(and current TeX users/programmers)

yo'
oh Prague School of Economy ... :-/

@yo' yes
The social evening will be at Strahov Monastery
I love to walk up there from the Karl's bridge...
Strahov Monastery (Czech: Strahovský klášter) is a Premonstratensian abbey founded in 1143 by Bishop Jindřich Zdík, Bishop John of Prague, and Duke Vladislav II. It is located in Strahov, Prague, Czech Republic. == History == === The founding of a monastery === After his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1138 the bishop of Olomouc Jindřich Zdík took hold of the idea of founding a monastery of regular canons in Prague, having the support of the bishops of Prague and the Duke of Bohemia Soběslav I and after his death, Vladislav II. After his first unsuccessful attempt to found a Czech variant of the...

@cgnieder Was that spam or just a lost user?

yo'
@topskip yeah, you'll pass several embassies en route there if you take the left turn at Malostranské náměstí (which is my preferred route), so be careful ;)

Last time I took the left turn..

yo'
9:44 AM
@topskip it's a lovely quite narrow, long, straight street ending in old stairs, and you end up in the Petřin gardens, which are nice.

Hi guys!
I pressed enter too quickly...

@yo' but I felt lost, the year before that I took the other route

A friend of mine gave me this mug:

how to insert picture on chat?

Not sure if you guys can spot the reference, this medicine is used for people to sleep. :P

yo'
9:46 AM
@Cortizol there's an upload button on the right from the text field

@yo' Thanks!

yo'
@PauloCereda I know what is Clonazepam ;) That one's not for coffee huh

@yo' ooh! :)

@yo' My thoughts exactly. :) Unless of course we have some sort of negation symbol before that text. :P

do you know how to make this numbers 9 8 9... in same line, and similar for that numbers in ( ) ?

yo'
@topskip Or you can change your habits, start at Národní Divadlo, cross Most Legií, see the monument for the totality victims, take the funicular, walk around Petřín and then go to Strahov
(this way you'd go very close to my alma mater)

@yo' Thanks! I'll try it out and hope that I will find my way. It will be dark the time I walk uphill.

yo'
@topskip From the top station of the funicular, it's quite straight: mapy.cz/s/feaj
and the funicular itself is a funny experience. It stops twice in the middle even though there's only one station. And if there happens to be snow, you'll see people with skis and bobsleds taking it up :)

I missed the part with the funicular - that's cool. Yes, then it's easy to find.
@yo' thanks for the suggestion!

yo'
9:56 AM
@topskip well, you can climb the hill, but why would you do that ....

The person I am with this time doesn't like hills too much, so I might take a ride on the funicular

yo'
you'll manage :)
@topskip you travel with somebody or it's someone local?

@yo' My girlfriend comes with me
(and open street maps)

yo'
@topskip nice

@StefanKottwitz I saw you are moving golatex (i already thought so since the last time we talked). Short question: What happens to our guests? Most importantly Besserwisser.

1 hour later…
11:29 AM
@david I agree with you, this is definitely a duplicate tex.stackexchange.com/questions/223167/…
It seems the user has a thing for duplicate questions.

@StefanKottwitz Don't know if it is my buggy firefox, but i cannot stay logged in at 78.46.26.59
@StefanKottwitz Die Uhr scheint 15 Minuten vorraus zu sein.

12:19 PM
@StefanKottwitz Can you make the tt a bit more typewriter? Not sure i my eyes are going bad, but i find it hard to distinguish between normal and tt. I have the same problem on TeXwelt.

Do we have a question on how to determine the proper textwidth once I have the font?
@egreg I wanted to avoid the need to scale fonts by large factors. Other than that, I agree that your approach is probably more robust

@yo' Considering that very few fonts have 17pt optical versions, doing \larger\larger is not really different from doing \resizebox.
@yo' I think there is one, but it doesn't make much sense.

yo'
@egreg yeah I know. But for the scriptstyles, it can make a difference
@egreg ok. I just wanted to make sure that I don't stretch things too much

@yo' Maybe; but it becomes very difficult to find the right balance. One could add the size changing command: \sbox{\z@}{$\m@th#1#2$}, that would scale the font in the corresponding size.

yo'
@egreg yep. As well, if I was to use it, I wouldn't want the symbol to be as pricesely sized and position as the sum symbol, probably

2:33 PM
@yo' Oh, no! I have to change radio program: the usual one has Martinů! Unbearable.
Good, the other one has Corelli.

yo'
@egreg lol

@yo' Something from “Špalíček”, really unfriendly to my ears.

3:12 PM
Chocolate!

yo'
3:28 PM
@PauloCereda We love chocolate :)

@yo' Yay!

@Johannes_B Time fixed! Use the DNS name instead of the IP, for login cookie and working links. Does password reset link work now? Sorry I'm busy a bit, currently.

@StefanKottwitz Tried two minutes ago, it still links back to the old site.

yo'
@Johannes_B it'll take a while for all DNS to update a 2nd level domain's IP

@StefanKottwitz Cookie? Me want cookie!

3:39 PM
@egreg <3

Guys, gotta go. See you

yo'
@Johannes_B bye!

@Johannes_B See ya!

@egreg thanks for the creative numbering solution. I didn't think to do that. Though somehow it seems "sub-optimal" :-)
Really no "official" way to do it?

@PaulGessler There's no centeralignat . :(

3:43 PM
@egreg I see. Well I gave you a virtual cookie for it, anyway. :-)

@PaulGessler Yummy!

@Johannes_B Did you reset your DSL modem? (if at home)
@Johannes_B ipconfig /flushdns ?

@DavidCarlisle Now the function is only 2.2 times slower than the Matlab-wrapped Fortran implementation. Had to manually write a custom rank revealing QR factorization though :P

@Johannes_B Ok, tt to typewriter with small caps >:-)
@Johannes_B I will have time for further adjustments in the night

yo'
Any native speaker around? I would use a small English help, please :)

4:04 PM
@yo' yo!

@PaulGessler In the field of combinatorics on words, one of the most crucial types of questions is: Which properties can live together on a~single word?
there are too many "of"s and too many plurals to my liking
but the primary concern is: Is it correct?

@yo' grammatically I believe it is correct. But it reads oddly to me.

yo'
@PaulGessler it's from a research project for a French committee ...

@yo' maybe better to wait for some expert on these things. ;-)

yo'
@PaulGessler I can't really wait :-/ :-(

4:17 PM
@yo' Break it down to two pieces; The following question is one of the most crucial types in the field of combinatorics on words: Which properties can live together on a single word?
.... is: .... doesn't seem right and repetitive

yo'
@percusse sounds better, thanks :)

@ThomasF.Sturm: Well, nice to have you on the Show ;-)

yo'
4:34 PM
@ChristianHupfer The Show Must Go On

@yo': ;-)

@percusse ooh not bad..

4:59 PM
Paraphrasing Bjarne Stroustrup, there are only two kinds of open source projects: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses

@DavidCarlisle I really didn't know how much NAG played a crucial role in the scientific conputing since recently. Almost all articles one way or the other point to your stuff. Even SLICOT was released to public domain partially by NAG. I also have never heard about WGS before.
@PauloCereda Hahaha. I'll be joining both of them soon :)

@percusse I have both badges. :)

@PauloCereda Rezpekt!

@percusse <3

@PauloCereda Does Windoze command shell accept cd directory;command file (where command is any existing command)?

5:04 PM
@egreg Use pipe in between

@percusse So the answer is no?

@egreg Let me check before I type something stupid :)

yo'
@percusse this wouldn't work in linux AFAIK, since the receiver is creted before the transmitter. But Windoze may be strange.

cd MyDocu~ & dir
should work
put & in between

@egreg I think it doesn't, only if you chain commands, I guess.

5:09 PM
@PauloCereda Did I misunderstand the requirement?

@PauloCereda OK, I won't introduce system dependent changes. Too bad mpost doesn't accept the -output-dir option. :(

@percusse You got it right, sir. :)

@percusse You were quicker than me. :)

@PauloCereda I don't know if it is psychological but Windows command prompt feels castrated compared to the old days.
It feels like I can't do much in terms of OS functions

5:12 PM
@percusse "User friendly". :)

@percusse But then cd directory && mpost file would work both on Unix and Windoze

@egreg If change directory is successful, yes I think so.

@percusse Good, thanks!

@egreg My pleasure.
@PauloCereda ah yea that too

@egreg We will have MetaPost for arara 4.0 :)

@DavidCarlisle I would love that.

Q: TexWorks destroys tex document when compiling with pdfLaTex

helgsoWhen I input \documentclass{article} \begin{document} Hello World! \end{document} and compile with pdfLaTex, the output .pdf file is created and looks good. My sourcefile doesn't.

@percusse: ^^ please kill me.

@PauloCereda That's actually pretty clever! Though I smell a bit of trolling

@yo' seems we write the same comment (ouput filename:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle I just included a straightforward test for those who not believe ;)
so: post-doc application sent. Now cross your fingers, please! :)
btw, are people looking forward to March 20? It'll be a nice show, especially in the UK :)

@yo' Beginning of Spring? I don't think it's much different from high Winter, in the UK. :P

yo'
5:51 PM
@egreg you don't follow scientific news? :)
A total solar eclipse will occur on Friday March 20, 2015. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible over a region thousands of kilometres wide. It will have a magnitude of 1.045. The longest duration of totality will be 2 minutes 47 seconds...

@yo' Not total here, I guess. :(
@yo' Let's hope we won't have a TeXlipse. :)

yo'
@egreg nono, it's total basically just over the ocean

@egreg TeXlipse is one of the worst attempts of a TeX editor. :)

@PauloCereda I know. I'm not considering it. ;)

@egreg Wait for the integrated TeX editor featured in arara 5.0. :)

6:05 PM
@PauloCereda Are you rewriting Arara in Emacs?

@egreg I'm rewriting emacs in arara. :)
2

@StefanKottwitz Oh, right, forgot about that. But at my friends place i cannot just restart the thing. And at home, i have no internet connection.

6:22 PM
@egreg: ^^ :)

yo'
@PauloCereda I hoped for the suspended E in TeX.... :(
:D

@PauloCereda No arara directive?

@yo' LOL
@egreg Ouch, I forgot! :P

6:46 PM
@egreg latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=86973#p86973 :-p My personal opinion: I wouldn't do that.

@Johannes_B Isn't the same question we discussed the other day?

Yep, followup.

@Johannes_B I won't bother.

@egreg To be honest, i didn't really understand the question.

I would recommend him gather and \qquad. At least that's what I would change it into.

yo'
@PauloCereda I have a similar dino at home, he sits on top of one of my loudspeakers and dances every time I play.

@yo' <3

yo'
@PauloCereda well, he is there, that's for real (he doesn't dance tho, they gave him plush and not muscles)
how are your conference papers going?

7:29 PM
@PauloCereda Grrr, dinosaur

@PauloCereda: Hello Paulo, are you feeling better?
@PauloCereda: I will flag your post about rewriting emacs in arara... it's an insult :-P

7:51 PM
Back again...

8:06 PM
will someone have an idea why I get different character from those shown at this tex log page, than what I get from running pdflatex locally? Here is the code, and screen shots
\documentclass[a4paper,10pt]{article}
\usepackage[english]{babel}
\usepackage{blindtext}
\usepackage{microtype}
\begin{document}
\begin{minipage}{3.7cm}
\blindtext
\end{minipage}
\end{document}

@Jubobs: You managed to lure Thomas Sturm to TUG competition ;-)

But it shows << in there, on the page, but when I compile the above I get "" instead of <<, in the circled region. I am using texlive 2014
The blog is 2009 dated. May be latex changed since then?

@Nasser it's not just the characters you circled, the fonts and linebreaking are all different

@DavidCarlisle yes. I guess something changed. 6 years is long time, may be fonts changed.

@Nasser perhaps blindtex has changed sine 2.09 to adjust the punctuation (or perhaps it wasn't typeset with babel english option (that isn't a common style of quote in english)
@Nasser the default latex fonts haven't changed since 1987 or so

8:18 PM
is etex needed for lualatex? I know it is supposed to increase number of registers, was wondering if this also applies to lualatex or just pdflatex? I am trying to come up with a set of core needed packages to include all the time.

@Nasser Currently, the LaTeX format doesn't care if you use pdfTeX or LuaTeX: you only get the standard (256) registers available to the allocation system
That is likely to change soon: we think this needs addressing

@JosephWright more checkins .. :-)
@Nasser why?

@DavidCarlisle Yes

@DavidCarlisle sorry, why on what? Why I need to find min. set of package to include?

@Nasser since you are generating the documents (aren't you?) can't you just add them on demand, if you have a picture add graphicx, if you need tikz, add tikz, just loading everything all the time maximises the chance of collision and slows things down

8:30 PM
@Nasser -- the version on the left looks like it was run with microtype turned on (although i don't know how this was done). take a look at the right-hand edge -- the punctuation extends out beyond the letters just a bit; the edge looks even, but it's an optical illusion, since a punctuation glyph (except for the question mark) has almost no "ink" in its "box".

@DavidCarlisle I am not auto-generating latex files for everything. But for some report. Almost everything else I do, I start by doing \input{my_core_packages} and it got too big, and I need to clean it, so I only include the core packages really needed. I do not want in each file try to figure and type the same thing each time.

@Nasser why do you need more than half a dozen packages ever? :-) hypererf, graphicx, a font package, a drawing package, and then one or two specific packages for the subject siunitx or chemmacros or amsmath.

@DavidCarlisle yes. That is why I asked, if I need etex. Currently, this is my core_packages.tex
\usepackage{setspace}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{epstopdf}%
\epstopdfsetup{update}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage{amsmath,mathtools}
\usepackage{amsfonts}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage{microtype} %improves justification in pdflatex
\usepackage{etex} %adds more registers
Then if I need special package, I include that separately in the file itself.
@barbarabeeton The left one, I run on my Linux, texlive 2014, as is. I just typed pdflatex foo.tex, on the latex code shown above. The right image, is from the tex blog texblog.net/latex-archive/latex-general/pdflatex-microtype I copied as is.

@Nasser that's not so bad, you see "M"WE posted here with 50 or 60 packages:-) I'd lose setspace, I'd probably lose epstopdf, you don't need to specify amsmath if you have mathtools you dont need amsfonts if you have amssymb

@yo' Almost ready, I just need one submission and we are done. :)
@JosephWright :)
@ChristianHupfer I am, thank you. :)

8:40 PM
@PauloCereda: Yay! ;-)

@DavidCarlisle we need a GUI with an advanced A.I. engine to sort this Latex packages usages and dependencies and what to include and what not. I am thinking of this: I write the latex file, without including anything, but before I compile it, I run by the A.I. program. The program uses a database to figure which packages are needed based on careful analysis of the latex code, and it generates a .tex file to includes them. on next pass, latex file will include this file, it is all automated.

that's just the same as saying you want a system that reads your mind and makes the document. If you want do draw a picture and have read that \draw[-->@@::];foo makes the shape you want, then that will have told you to put \begin{tikzpicture} before that and \usepackage{tikz} at the start. What's the point in just automating the last bit?

@Nasser: Go ahead programming this tool ;-) After years of using LaTeX it's quite clear which packages to load (except some rarely used ones, whose names are often forgotten as well as the macro names)

@ChristianHupfer choose the ones with DPC in the \ProvidesPackage string, they usually work quite well I find.
3

@DavidCarlisle: No, I won't buy that packages, they are scratched :-P

8:51 PM
:(

@DavidCarlisle: Sorry ... I had to write this joke ;-)

@JosephWright ah finally I see. vlatex06 is extra \nobreak from new space hacks

yo'
9:06 PM
@PauloCereda Nice :)

@egreg Mu business apparently fixed in LuaTeX SVN

@JosephWright yo. and i have checked in all the tlg apart from fltrace ones. time to run it on luatex again I suppose:-)

@DavidCarlisle Sounds good

@JosephWright docstrip guards to make version of the output routine with every combination of 2014 or 2015 format. with or without one or both of fltrace and flafter are getting "interesting"

@DavidCarlisle You and Frank still need to decide on the plan, then

9:21 PM
@JosephWright we have a plan on how to decide a plan:-)

@DavidCarlisle Cool
@DavidCarlisle Trying check with all three engines here

@JosephWright I decided to leave luatex (you have a better handle on which are things fixed in their svn) but am running xetex now

@DavidCarlisle Cool

Can an array be inside the table environment?

@dustin it has to be in math, but you can have math in a table env

9:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle I am aware I could use tabular, but then I would need math delimiters in every cell. Is that the only way to go?

@dustin no you can have \begin{table}$\begin{array}{ccc} or \begin{table}\begin{tabular}{>$c<$>$c<$>$c<$}` (which is almost the same thing)

@DavidCarlisle ok thanks.

@dustin tabular and array share 99% of their code:-)

@DavidCarlisle is there are reason why array doesn't align around the equal sign like the align environments? Can I force array to do so? Even with rcl the spacing is still wide.

@dustin because it's designed for typesetting arrays/matrices with equally spaced columns If you want to fake align (why not use align?) use {r@{}>{{}}c<{{}}@{}l}

9:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle LaTeX complained when I put align in the table env.

@dustin the @{} removes the inter-column space and >{{}} construct means you get {}={} so infx spacing
@dustin you did something wrong then, you can put more or less anything except a float inside a table

@DavidCarlisle I will double check the align in the table then to see what went wrong.

@dustin you probably want align* of course as using a numbered construct inside a float is likely to make a strange number sequence (latex won't care but it will confuse your readers)

@DavidCarlisle I was using alignat*

@dustin should work

9:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle yes it did. I am not sure why it didn't like it the firs time around. Thanks.

@JosephWright most of the extra xetex failures are for ^^ab and allocations being one more,
@dustin ask @PauloCereda I can fix (or break) things at a distance:-)

@DavidCarlisle it worked. I did notice though that align in the table produces more spacing between the environment and the table caption then with array.

@DavidCarlisle Looking at those now

@dustin array itself makes no vertical space so if you had array in $ that would be parskip after it array in \[ would have belowdisplayskip which is probably want the ams alignments have

@DavidCarlisle thanks. I just issued a \vspace{-0.75cm} probably not the professional way to handle it but it works for me.

yo'
9:50 PM
@dustin align in tabular? Frankly, that smells badly

@yo' in table

yo'
@dustin ah, a bit better
but why would you do that?

@yo' I have a group of equation I want in a table.

yo'
@dustin like a bunch of equations that float all around the place? (I mean together, but in a float)

@JosephWright Good to know!

yo'
9:55 PM
something like this? @dustin
\begin{table}\centering
\(\begin{aligned}
c^2 &= a^2+b^2
&
E &= mc^2
\\
E &= mc^2 & c^2 &= a^2+b^2
\end{aligned}\)
\end{table}

Yes it is something like that

yo'
and the one I aboove doesn't work?

@JosephWright what do you think we should do with tests that do \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc} ? add conditional code so they do something else in xetex, just check in a xetex_tlg logging the error message, or make [latin1] it work in xetex?

@DavidCarlisle Is it really something we want to be doing to make inputenc work with XeTeX in that sense?

@JosephWright some days yes (I have a version that works:-) some days no.... As here, I don't think it is useful in general but it would I think really help the story to move people to Unicode engines if the majority of documents "just worked" and that means (or might mean) making inputenc work
@JosephWright probably in short term a xetex.tlg that just has logs the error message is i suppose the thing to do

10:32 PM
The caption says After a 14 hours coding session

yo'
@percusse I think I'll have to write enough messages to shove it off the screen or this's gonna drive me crazy :D

@yo' does that help^^

user image
i quoted it. it should reduce the effect

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Web Devloper -> Images -> Disable Images -> Disable Image Animations

@yo' we don't believe you'd do that:-)

yo'
10:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle how to say ... whatever you believe? :)
There's a good reason why this button has been invented.

Yes it is more than 3 clicks. As you all here are emacs/vim people. That's like restarting computer.

yo'
@percusse no, it's only 2 clicks

@percusse less annoying, as to say :)

@percusse shame that @yo' won't see the really exciting bit at the end

yo'
10:48 PM
but not as annoying as the current choice of mid-price keyboards :-/
@DavidCarlisle I see it ;)

@DavidCarlisle :-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle funny, really

@yo' sorry been running the latex test suite all day. Ah but I've been overshadowed by a real pro....

yo'
10:49 PM
@Paulo soon there'll only the white borders ;)

@yo' :)

Hahaha....
@PauloCereda I really tried to do that. A real troll is hard to come by :P

@percusse :)

@PauloCereda how's the interview edits coming along?

@PauloCereda Do you follow the coding love?

10:52 PM
@DavidCarlisle Working on it:
[paulo@cambridge Downloads] $ ls interview*
interview1.txt  interview.txt
@percusse No, what's that?

yo'
@PauloCereda show ls -l or how are we suppose to believe you that you actually do something with it? :D

Some of the funniest programmer gifs such as above.

@percusse OH MY!
@yo' Nope. :P

hello, what does the -| symbol mean in tikz?

yo'
@saadtaame in which context? It can mean several things

i saw it here, i'm trying to reproduce something similar but can't understand what it is doing: texample.net/tikz/examples/nodetutorial
it's in the last draw command

yo'
@saadtaame I see, it does some sort of projection, lemme find the page in the reference book
from `pgfmanual.pdf`, page 150:
\path . . . -|hcoordinate or cyclei . . . ;
This operation means "first horizontal, then vertical."
@saadtaame ^^

like (x,y)? @yo'

yo'
@saadtaame what is your operating system?

Dan

anyone know why a memoir doc won't let me use verbatim text without crashing?

windows, what does this line do: ([xshift=5mm]s -| l1) -- ([xshift=-5mm]s1' -| e1')?

yo'
or anyways, if you run texdoc pgf, a very very long manual will open. Go to page 150 and chec it there
ah damn that's even something different, sorry
@saadtaame if I understand it correctly, it takes y coordinate from the LHS and x from the RHS
so ([xshift=5mm]s -| l1) has x = s.x + 5mm and y = l1.y

what you said is the opposite of what you describe in code!

yo'
@saadtaame ah sorry, so maybe the other way around. Sorry, I can't find it in the manual :(
still I think I was correct, and I just don't see what the xshift is for

@percusse: ^^ look what you did to me. :)

11:32 PM
thanks for the help. is there another way to draw the middle thing in the example picture?

yo'
@saadtaame ah I got it, the xshift of course applies to the whole coordinate
well, I would draw the background rectangles before the wavy line, and then add the wavy line with [shorten>=5mm, shorten<=5mm]

but how do you know that this will go in between the two diagrams?

yo'
@saadtaame well, you take the node s as the y-reference and l1 as the x-reference

@yo' how do you do that?

Dan
can anyone help me understand how to do inline verbatim text? I know I've done it using \verb|text| before but now in a memoir doc it breaks it. I tried \ttfamily{text} but this changes all thereafter in the paragraph. I only want specific inline words/text within brackets

yo'
11:37 PM
@saadtaame try to add \fill[green] (s -| l1) circle (3pt); at the end of the tikzpicture
@Dan what breaks? \verb is one of the most fragile things. You probably want {\ttfamily bla} or \texttt{bla} ? The \XXfamily commands are switches, the \textXX commands take an argument ;)
@saadtaame can you see the green dot?

I see, but why didn't he simply write (s, l1)? @yo'

yo'
@saadtaame now, that's the point (s -| l1). And if you do ([xshift=5mm] s -| l1) you get a point 5mm right from this, and that's where the arrow starts ;)

Dan
@yo' aha, thanks!

yo'
@Dan youre welcome :)

I see, but why didn't he simply write (s, l1)? @yo'

yo'
11:42 PM
@saadtaame have you tried it? I've never seen that syntax, and it certainly doesn't work
! Package PGF Math Error: Unknown function `s' (in 's').

Alright, so it's a way of extracting coordinates. @yo'

yo'
@saadtaame exactly ;)

@yo' thank you so much for the time :)

yo'
@saadtaame you're welcome
TikZ is a beast, I only know small bits here and there

I'm just starting, taking me 3 hours now to draw a simple diagram :D

yo'
11:46 PM
@saadtaame we all have been there and done that. (Well, @David has not)

lol, who's David? The author of tikz?

yo'
@saadtaame no

A: Draw an aircraft with Tikz

David CarlisleIt was suggested in chat http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/9482087#9482087 That picture mode would be the ideal tool for the job here: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \begin{picture}(200,100) \put(30,40){\line(1,0){150}} \put(30,40){\line(0,1){60}} \put(30,100){\line(...

@saadtaame well, you shall ask @Paulo for some gossip relevant information about David ;)
anyways, I gotta go now, I've had a busy week and there's still one day to come. I think that Saturday will be a lazy day. Good night

@saadtaame I'm the site expert on tikz

@FaheemMitha The new years resolution is to get a tikz gold badge by answering tikz question with tex primitives, picture mode, or if really pushed pstricks, doing quite well so far this year.

@DavidCarlisle hi, what's something i can learn in 4 minutes about tikz?

@saadtaame honestly I know absolutely nothing about tikz:-)

11:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle you know how to draw a plane

@saadtaame not using tikz though

@DavidCarlisle: You should show him your drawing skills ;-) I remember the house you have 'drawn' recently ;-)

so who are you @DavidCarlisle ?
