@PeterGrill The regex solution can take care also of a complicated prefix. But specifying the complicated prefix needs some knowledge of l3regex

@egreg Yeah, still have to head down the LaTeX3 route someday... Only have 9 months left to get my App done, not much time for the amount of stuff I need to do!!!

@egreg and @DavidCarlisle I must be blind today; all this time I was thinking about \leftmargin and I didn't notice that the code had \leftskip; anyways, \leftmargin won't be of any use here either.
I still have to teach my eyes to read what it is actually written and not what they want to see.

@GonzaloMedina it's not possible, or I wouldn't post "teh" so often...

@Karl'sstudents Could you please be so kind and post your batch script for cwRsync? I was not successful with it and it would be nice to have something for comparison.

12:17 AM
@PeterGrill Having worked on the final edits on a small document (<20 pages) myself yesterday, I have to agree. XeLaTeX slowed my down a lot more than I was used to.

@Qrrbrbirlbel Yeah, try it again with pdflatex and don't see how you can go back, unless there is some font issues you really really must have.

@PeterGrill Well, now that you mention it; let me try to re-write the important parts to use pdfLaTeX (font settings, babel/polyglossia). Though, in the past I always had problems the Type 1 fonts of the libertine package.

I had to use \pgfmathparse{####1}. The new TikZ code is quite scary

@percusse only 4?

12:21 AM
@Speravir see above.

@DavidCarlisle Good luck with \tracingall :-)

@Karl'sstudents Oh thanks. But I see you do rsync only locally. I thought you connect to a remote server.

@Qrrbrbirlbel We know who is coding that part then :)

@percusse I don't even know what you're talking about. What did I sign up for? ;)

12:25 AM
@Qrrbrbirlbel I don't understand why they are rewriting the whole pgfplots into TikZ

@percusse They do?

@Qrrbrbirlbel shame tikz doesn't pass the values through a toks register then you wouldn't have to double the # (cf \g@addto@macro)

@Speravir: domain.org can be any mirrors.

@Qrrbrbirlbel Well this new datavisualization library is more or less a pgfplots package.

12:28 AM
@percusse Hasn't that library been around for some time now already? I always skipped that chapter in the PGF manual.
@PeterGrill Weird, I'm getting ! You can't use a prefix with \begingroup'.` on \begin{document}now ...

@Qrrbrbirlbel Don't think I have seen that one.

@Qrrbrbirlbel The CVS manual has 120 pages for that :) And it's not even half-baked. The graph drawing library seems TTantau's MSc student's work implemented completely. There are quite some interesting directions.

@Karl'sstudents Thanks again. Now I have something to investigate.

@percusse Over 1000 pages! But yeah, the Graph library sure seems interesting. The German students. :)

@Speravir You are welcome.

12:34 AM
@Qrrbrbirlbel I don't know how you can type out the thesis with everyword being 50 letter long in german. That's probably why most PhD programs are three years. It takes another year to type and spellcheck
:)

@Qrrbrbirlbel Hallo, Du Drääsdner! ;-) Did you have the opportunity to search for accessilibity.sty and its documentation?

@PeterGrill Ah, well. I guess something with glossaries and UTF8 and all my Üs. Without that I get miktex-makemf and miktex-makepk errors. Those type 1 fonts are seriously messed up in my distribution. I think I will take your advice and just use whatever @egreg's using (Palatino looks nice too and apparently has some fitting math fonts.)

@Qrrbrbirlbel Let me know when you figure it out as I want to move from the default fonts later when I get closer to release.

@percusse It's not that bad. :D But I do like my Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaften. :D

@Qrrbrbirlbel goggle gives me this
Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft

12:42 AM
@percusse It even has its own Wikipedia article (what hasn't).

I think you (germans) take this whitespace word too literally you can use one or two occasionally

@percusse Ask him yourself. ;-) (I guess, yes.)

I should try hanging out in German.SE. I don't understand most of it but ... yeah

@percusse Could help for learning. @PauloCereda it’s also a tip for you. ;-)

1:01 AM
Ah, would you look at, @PeterGrill. Ah simple initexmf --mkmaps and all works fine now. Even the longer document (minus math fonts I haven't set up).

@Qrrbrbirlbel So, what is the time comparison?

@Speravir: Are you the author of blindtext package?

@PeterGrill It's not looking good for Xe.

@Karl'sstudents No, “Blindtext” is just the technical term in German for “filler text”.

@Qrrbrbirlbel I think it is a well known issue, but haven't seen any talk of fixes -- no that I have looked since I decided not to use Xe.

1:04 AM
@Speravir I see.

@PeterGrill I thought, the development of Xe has stopped anyway. It's Lua vs pdf now, I guess.

@Qrrbrbirlbel Oh, well that would explain it then.

@Qrrbrbirlbel What did you do? A Manual font installation? Otherwise some time ago something must have been gone wrong.

@PeterGrill My advice would be: Choose a text font that has a compatible math font partner. Even Libertine + XITS Math (which is very close) feels uncomfortable.
@Speravir Guilty, I think. Some time ago I installed some Garamond math font stuff. (Never really used it.) Oh, and the licensed fonts for the Uni (haven't used that template either: sans-serif for running text, raggedright, ...).
@PeterGrill I'm waiting for @egreg to return so that I can ask him what he used in the one work we discussed lately.
@Speravir And you get two upvotes. Not that I actually have read your answer from top to bottom, but it looks good enough for me. ;)

@Qrrbrbirlbel Paulo mode Awww, <3

1:18 AM
@percusse Don't we have a tag for datavisuali[sz]ation?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Look yourself under tex.stackexchange.com/tags Neither datavisualisation nor data-visualisation nor visualisation – and nothing of them with z, too.

@Speravir Update the front page, we do now. :)

@Qrrbrbirlbel Ah, with tikz in front. Something for our retaggers …

@Speravir Well, there aren't as many questions around as I thought there would. There is one where the library is only used in an unaccepted answer so I haven't tagged that one.
@Speravir And I like structure hence the tikz- in front.

@Qrrbrbirlbel So you were the retagger for now.

1:24 AM
The very generic could be about or about one of many questions.
In my opinion, tags and their wikis are under-used …

badge arrived:-)

Vertical spacing is not identical.

@Karl'sstudents oh sorry I didn't see your code section I was just reading Andrew's answer, no he didn't mean \newline he meant a blank line in the file that is two consecutive newline characters

9:23 AM
@DavidCarlisle Oh. I see. Thanks. I thought the double newline stands for \newline\newline. If he said the double new lines, I would understand.

9:44 AM
@egreg turns out reasons for bidi removal were more reasonable than it might have seemed, not to go into the reasons here, but just saying for the record.

9:59 AM
@Karl'sstudents In this question one answer was setting \setlength{\parindent}{0pt} which is one of the "Deadly sins" according to l2tabu section 1.5. Should I rate down this answer?

@HenriMenke Wait...

@HenriMenke what's wrong with \setlength{\parindent}{0pt} ?? (nothing wrong being a good answer to that question:-)

10:39 AM
@JosephWright: I tried dandelion on one of egreg's answer some lines before. :)

@DavidCarlisle A hint?

@DavidCarlisle No longtable support? :)

@PauloCereda I have fixiing the LT support in bidi on my todo list, unfortunately it isn't really supported in xetex (it's ok in luatex which has a different bidi model)

@DavidCarlisle oooh <3

Q: How to get longtable and bidi to work together?

Aryeh Leib TaurogI am typesetting a Hebrew document using bidi. The material in the longtable environment still comes out LTR. How do I make it work? \documentclass{article} \usepackage{longtable} \usepackage[no-sscript]{xltxtra} % loads fixltx2e, metalogo, xunicode, fontspec \setmainfont{FreeSans} \usepackag...

@DavidCarlisle I don't think this is a good solution, as this might interfere with other packages using the \parindent variable.

11:08 AM
@HenriMenke I'm not sure of the question but it's perfectly supported in latex for a class to set \parindent (unlike other TeX primitive registers such as \leftskip) and the l2tabu section you mentioned didn't say you shouldn't set it just that you should use em units (which doesn't apply to 0pt as the unit is irrelevant)

@DavidCarlisle I'm sorry. I read the german l2tabu and it states that you shouldn't set \parskip. I'll delete my comment on the answer. Sorry again.

@HenriMenke ah \parskip is a little trickier than \parindent

We moan about people still using \bf after so many years. But somebody, in 1991, still used "Almost Modern" fonts.
3
Q: How to install or replace fonts in old TeX files?

makI got interested in a research paper from 1991, which I cannot get an electronic online version of. The author was kind enough to send me his tex sources, but is himself unable to produce a pdf file from it. Now I am trying to get this file compiled. The "style files" that are loaded start with ...

@egreg Well plain TeX is supposed to be archive-stable :-)

@JosephWright Not with regard to "Almost Modern" fonts. Knuth said to remove them from archives and documents; AFAIR, CM fonts were shipped with TeX82 (and the new MF82). AMS also removed msxm and msym, which was wrong.

@egreg Perhaps you might add this as an additional comment to make this clear for the questionner

@JosephWright: don't worry about the "unknown" commit, I used to do that a lot (my git configurations were project-based, and not global)... until the day I got mad and decided to go ballistic and enable global confs. :)

@PauloCereda It's like the joke about a devotee of San Gennaro, who always prayed the saint to make him win at the lottery; after some months, the guy got upset with San Gennaro, because he hadn't yet won. So he went to the Cathedral in Naples and complained before the saint's statue. Then San Gennaro quietly replied: "I would help you, but if you buy no lottery ticket…"

LyX Question: How do I bring up the command window? wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyxFunctions says to press (highlighted grey) M-x ? I typed M-x in a LyX document, nothing happened. Is there a special way (and place) I am supposed to type this?

@TheSubstitute M-x presumably means the thing normally called alt x in windows. Is that what you typed (I've never seen lyx, I'm just assuming it is the same as emacs:-)

It worked! I didn't know that, thank you. What does it mean when something is highlighted in grey? I see that a lot.

@TheSubstitute Not having looked at the document, I would guess it is just the style for keystrokes or what you type in as opposed to descriptive text.

3:03 PM
@TheSubstitute Perhaps the selection of a document?
I mean, selected text.

3:23 PM
@Speravir I can't seem to work out how to reply to your older message- apologies :) it was something about @harishkumar and indent.pl... :o

4:07 PM
Hello guys, does any of you know of a question here about defining a shape and using it again in Tikz? (Not a node, but a \draw (x,y) rectangle (x,y) node{}; type of shape).

@Alenanno That's not a shape. …

What is it?

@Alenanno A path and a node in the middle somewhere (depending on pos) between those coordinates.

Ok, I didn't mean shape in the technical sense but rather change that path and make it custom instead of a basic rectangle. I've thought about polygons but I don't know how to change the position of the edges.

@Alenanno See my answer in tex.stackexchange.com/q/106558/16595
There is a shape for a regular polygon that you can use …
(A shape is “just” a well-defined path (or paths) with text at a well-defined position relative to the path.)

4:15 PM
Oh I see

Tikzperts! I'd like to draw a catenary with nodes on it (that is nodes satisfy the equation of a drooping(?) down catenary... [parabola-open-upwards kind]...
Any hints?

@KannappanSampath Cheat and use a parabola. ;-)

@egreg with large positive a in x^2 = 4ay ? :)

@KannappanSampath It's just the truncation to the first two terms of the Taylor expansion, after all. :)

@egreg But, you know, tikz is ignorant of Taylor? :)
Question: Who is DEK's favourite detective?

4:32 PM

Answer: Anyone wanna try?
:( OK. The answer I had in mind was: Hercule Poirot!
[snip] so I can't give any explicit help.
Pretend that you're Hercule Poirot: Examine all clues,
and deduce the truth by order and method.

@KannappanSampath Here's a comparison

@egreg In the region that I care (the neighbourhood of 0), not bad at all!
(I have translated, but you'd see that already, anyway...)

@KannappanSampath Who isn't mentioned in the index of the TeXbook, while there are "Holmes, Thomas Sherlock Scott, 401." and "Wolfe [Holmes], Nero, 401." Two famous detectives.

@Qrrbrbirlbel \usepackage{ericclapton} :)

4:46 PM
@egreg Hmm, I should read the TeX Book. :)

@KannappanSampath Of course there's also "Watson, John Hamish, M.D., 401."

@egreg Watson is the Hastings of Poirot!
Hah, I was at a quiz where I fumbled when I was asked who the french Sherlock would be?!

@KannappanSampath Poirot was Belgian!

@PauloCereda Hehe. My thesis will have a soundtrack. ;)

@Qrrbrbirlbel Yay! :)

4:53 PM
@egreg Right! I know, I meant to say that I did not know the answer to that one and was embarrassed! (There are atleast two places where Captain Hastings writes how someone meeting Poirot mentioned his nationality wrongly and Poirot did not correct them: v. ABC murders for instance)

5:38 PM
@egreg I'd like to know, how, I'd specify the position of a minipage, I want to insert a picture which is running out of page in amsart...

@KannappanSampath why do you need a minipage to insert an image?

@DavidCarlisle No, I was wondering, if I could do sth with it... but, I would like to move the picture into the page (it is running out now...)
So, any suggestion to achieve that would be very helpful...

@Qrrbrbirlbel Sorry to bother you again but I still haven't figured out how to replace the usual rectangle path that I specified above with the signal shape. Is there an easy way to implement it using the macro you gave to me in my question? I tried all combinations but apparently I always choose to do something that is not explained in the manual. ^^'

(the point being, there is a lot of space on the left... @DavidCarlisle)

@KannappanSampath the same as you would position a letter, \vspace{-2cm}\hspace*{-3cm}\includegraphics...

5:48 PM
@DavidCarlisle It is ... you guessed it ... a tikz ... \ducks.
Hah, thanks a bunch!!
@David It was helpful! I should have guessed though!

@Alenanno Hm? \node [shape=circle] {Text in the circle}; is the usual syntax for specifying a different shape (and you can leave out shape=as it will be tried automatically).
Instead of circle you can insert any shape that is defined, most shapes are loaded with one of the shapes.* library.
Maybe an example would be helpful to know what you are trying to do.

6:54 PM
Some tikzpert might be able to help me here:
I think it is fairly clear what it is that I am trying to do...
I want the arrows to line with the dotted lines that I am placing at the node...
Strategy: draw a single arrow between the nodes but do something with the intersection library?!!

@KannappanSampath No, it isn't … How to you place the dotted lines? Where do they start and end?

\node (A3_4) at (4, 1) {}; %{$\ddots$};
\draw (4,1) [dotted, bend left=10] -- (4.2, 1.2);
\node (A4_5) at (5, 1.7) {$A^l[T]$};
(@Qrrbrbirlbel I apologise, I'll sift through the code and paste a MWE...)
The thing I am trying to draw is REALLY big, and this is my first experience with something so big in TikZ.
@Qrrbrbirlbel VVV For a MWE:
\documentclass{amsart}
\usepackage{tikz}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\node (A2_3) at (3, 0.7) {$A^2[T]$};
\node (A3_4) at (4, 1) {}; %{$\ddots$};
\node (A4_5) at (5, 1.7) {$A^l[T]$};

\draw (4,1) [dotted, bend left=10] -- (4.2, 1.2);
\path (A2_3) edge [->]node [auto] {$\scriptstyle{}$} (A3_4);
\path (A3_4) edge [->]node [auto] {$\scriptstyle{}$} (A4_5);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}

7:13 PM
@KannappanSampath Well, where should the dotted path be? Why don't you use node anchors?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Full disclosure: no idea what node anchors are.... :(
But, let me give you an idea of what I want:

\documentclass{amsart}
\usepackage{tikz}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}%[nodes=draw]
\node (A2_3) at (3, 0.7) {$A^2[T]$};
\node (A3_4) at (4, 1) {}; %{$\ddots$};
\node (A4_5) at (5, 1.7) {$A^l[T]$};

\draw (A3_4.west) [dotted, bend left=10] to (A3_4.north east);
\path (A2_3) edge [->]node [auto] {$\scriptstyle{}$} (A3_4.west);
\path (A3_4.north east) edge [->]node [auto] {$\scriptstyle{}$} (A4_5);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}
By the way, the bend keys only work with to. -- will always be a straight line.

I want an arrow from node A2_3 to A4_5 with an arrow head in between followed by dotted lines and arrow ensuing from there (actually, you'll understand what I want better if you look at the ugliness after uncommenting ddots bit and commenting out \draw bit...
@Qrrbrbirlbel
I will try your code now...

Should all three paths form one line? Or are kinks allowed?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Yeah, they form one line, does that complicate matters....
?

Well, now you have two straight lines with a bended line between. At the connecting points you have kinks, they are not continuous.
@KannappanSampath Do you have an example of how it would look like ideally?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Hmm, let me see if I can use a drawing tool to create what I am looking for...

Great, now my iOS devices are getting the bosses names from the game Bayonetta. :)

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: Good afternoon! I'm Psmith, the friendly TeX bot - the p in my name is silent, as in pshrimp. I'm here as a companion to our fellow users in the typographic land. As you probably noticed, I always reply under Paulo's account, but do not despair, I say, my replies are always preceded by my own name. Enjoy your stay at TeX.sx! If you need any help, just ask our chat residents. Cheerio!
How about getting the right syntax this time? :P

@DavidCarlisle Not dead, but sleeping, as the gravestones say... Now a bit grumpy, or is that his owner?
!!/Wht so grumpy?

@Brent.Longborough Psmith, the TeX bot: I'm deeply sorry, old chap, but the command wht does not exist.

@PauloCereda You should pick up every wrong syntax for help and supply syntax help:-)

And patronising

@Qrrbrbirlbel Here is my very bad GIMP try:

- University of Moratuwa v University of Liberal Arts
- D.A.V College Chandigarh v Karachi University
- Great Britain Combined University Team v University of Liberal Arts
- Royal Challengers Bangalore v Mumbai Indians

Our cricket expert David might explain these results later on.

@David Do you watch IPL? :)

@KannappanSampath I don't watch cricket at all:-)

@DavidCarlisle Heh. :(

7:41 PM
@KannappanSampath hm?

@PauloCereda the drawing tool, GIMP...

@PauloCereda Paulo, the reply to fail (specifically) should be "doesn't form part of my epistemology" rather than "does not exist"
!!/snooker

@Brent.Longborough Psmith, the TeX bot: I'm deeply sorry, old chap, but the command snooker does not exist.

Our fencing expert Alan might explain these results later on.

@PauloCereda That was a misteak.

There's nothing on fencing news? Quelle surprise.

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: I'm able to recognize the following commands: help, list, cricket, song, fencing, basketball, ctan, texdef, search, eightball, reputation, answer, translate, choose. You probably noticed that all commands must start with !!/ followed by the command name, didn't you? Splendid!

@Qrrbrbirlbel Did that picture give some sense of what I was trying?

!!/eightball should @KannappanSampath have used picture mode?

@DavidCarlisle Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: without a doubt.

@KannappanSampath Well, have you taken a look at the code I posted? This does that somehow.
@KannappanSampath If you really want a straight continuous line, you could use the calc library and ($(a)!.3!(b)$) for the point 30% between (a) and (b) (without the auxiliary node).

7:57 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel Yes, I did, but, there must be a slightly better soln.
@Qrrbrbirlbel "without the auxiliary node" -- I think that is the key somehow; I was thinking of sth like clipping...
@Qrrbrbirlbel Can you please post an example code... :)

@KannappanSampath Clipping would work but involves either filling an area with white (= background) or using inverse clip. Not very nice.

@Qrrbrbirlbel Hmm... true.

\documentclass[tikz]{standalone} \usetikzlibrary{calc}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}[auto,swap]
\node (A2_3) at (3, 0.7) {$A^2[T]$};\node (A4_5) at (5, 1.7) {$A^l[T]$};
\path (A2_3) edge[->] node {$\scriptstyle{a^b}$} ($(A2_3)!.45!(A4_5)$)
      ($(A2_3)!.45!(A4_5)$) edge[dotted] ($(A2_3)!.55!(A4_5)$)
      ($(A2_3)!.55!(A4_5)$) edge[->] node  {$\scriptstyle a_b$} (A4_5);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}
@KannappanSampath See above. Bending wouldn't work so easily, though.

@Qrrbrbirlbel I see... That does it!
Now, I need to understand the magic.

@KannappanSampath I would suggest to a) use shorten > on the first edge and b) hiding that all in a to path.

8:06 PM
1. auto is what you're passing to the nodes, right?
@Qrrbrbirlbel I don't understand (b), ouch.

@KannappanSampath Yes, it works scope-wide.

@KannappanSampath Also
\usetikzlibrary{decorations.markings}
\begin{tikzpicture}[
decoration={markings,
    mark connection node=my node,
    mark=at position .5 with {\node[transform shape] (my node) {...};},
    mark=at position  1 with {\arrow{>}}
    }
]
\node (A2_3) at (3, 0.7) {$A^2[T]$};
\node (A3_4) at (4, 1) {}; %{$\ddots$};
\node (A4_5) at (5, 1.7) {$A^l[T]$};
\draw[->,decorate] (A2_3) -- (A4_5);
\end{tikzpicture}
:P
By the way Underscores in node names are bad karma....

@percusse Wow! How did you salvage that ddots? Is it possible to get arrowhead there for the first part!! Fantastic... @percusse and @Qrrbrbirlbel I need to learn this stuff.
@percusse Well, I did some of it with Commu.

@KannappanSampath He used the ... in the nodes, the node is transformed so that it lines up with the line (similar to sloped).

8:11 PM
@PauloCereda Hahahaha !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@percusse Suddenly, everything happened in the fencing world!
This bot is scary.

@PauloCereda Hi Paulo :) any ideas what this would mean from arara.log 03 Apr 2013 13:12:40.645 TRACE CommandTrigger - Can't locate File/HomeDir.pm in @INC (@INC contains: C:/texlive/2012/tlpkg/tlperl/lib c:/texlive/2012/tlpkg/tlperl/lib .) at C:\indent\\testread.pl line 10.

@KannappanSampath @Qrrbrbirlbel's way is more flexible. This is just to throw some stuff on the path midway. Probably won't work with curves too.

@cmhughes Can I see the rule? :)

Whenever I turn my head to TV Real Madrid scores another

8:16 PM
@PauloCereda sure- it's pretty much the one you helped me create- works great on Linux, but Windows is giving me trouble:
!config
# indent rule for arara
# author: Paulo Cereda, Chris Hughes
# last updated: 3/23/2013
# requires arara 3.0+
#
# Note: overwrite takes priority over output
#
# Sample usage:
#
# % arara: indent
# % arara: indent: {overwrite: yes}
# % arara: indent: {output: myfile.tex, silent: no}
# % arara: indent: {output: myfile.tex, silent: yes, overwrite: yes}
# % arara: indent: {trace: true}
# % arara: indent: {localSettings: true}
identifier: indent
name: Indent
#command: indent.cmd @{silent} @{trace} @{localSettings} @{ isEmpty( overwrite, isNotEmpty( output, "-o" ), overwrite ) } "@{file}"

@cmhughes Hm this rule is Windows-specific. You might use the OS detection feature to make it more portable. :) Try to call indent.cmd preceded by cmd /c

@PauloCereda ah, indeed... any "" needed?

@percusse Wow!
Now, time to understand what swap does...

@cmhughes Just go with command: cmd /c indent.cmd and it might work.
And the rest of the command of course. :)

@PauloCereda still no dice :( it's interesting because the perl script works from the command line, but the error coming back in arara.log makes it look like a path isn't being found
Can't locate File/HomeDir.pm in @INC (@INC contains: C:/texlive/2012/tlpkg/tlperl/lib c:/texlive/2012/tlpkg/tlperl/lib .) at C:\indent\\testread.pl line 10.

8:22 PM
@cmhughes I don't have Windows machine near me right now, but I'll take a look in a few minutes.

@PauloCereda no problem :) if you'd prefer me to turn it into a question, let me know :)

@PauloCereda a surprise that:-)

8:53 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)
