@Burgi This is what my mom uses - do note that loratadine tends be slow-acting; you'll need to take it up to three days in a row to gain the full effect of the medication, and it tends to take a few hours after you take it before symptoms start to improve.

thanks for the tip

12:46 AM
@Burgi heh, one nice thing about the haze. N95 masks are readily available ;)

1:01 AM
its worse at night for some reason
anyway i'm going to go pass out for a while

1 hour later…
2:07 AM
Grrr, I'm impatient... Helping a friend recover her hard drive... I can read the filenames and stuff, but nothing else is accessible -.- ddrescue is taking a long time to tell me it can't read crap

hm
NTFS?

Bob
2:55 AM
X is driving me up the wall
(EE) parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory)
:S
why ... why does an X server need a tty? what arcane magic do I need to invoke to start a bloody graphical environment?
2
incidentally, this is why "the year of the linux desktop" isn't happening, and probably will never happen

lol @ "arcane magic"

Bob
3:22 AM

wat.

3:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yup, NTFS. ddrescue is on pass #3, no bytes recovered yet....

Well, I just started, so I'm going to be waiting anyways

4:04 AM
hey everyone! I've been facing a small problem with my internet...can I get some help?

4:15 AM

lol

Bob
4th rebuild of the container
I'm this close to ditching lubuntu-desktop and just running openbox

3 hours later…
7:18 AM
@Carrick that really depends on the problem
state it, if we can help we will, but it may need a question on the main site.
@CanadianLuke stick it in the freezer overnight?

Q: Why am I not dead after *repeatedly* touching a high-voltage source?

pankaj prasadI play with mosquito racket in my home, I unscrew the racket and touched the 2 wires with my hands I felt that my bones are dislocated(i get shocked) but I am not dead, but maths says I should die. Here are my calculations: the output voltage is 5000 V to 10000 V, my body resistance approx. 50 ...

morning

@JourneymanGeek please don't do this.

@JourneymanGeek lmaoooo

hmmm
is there a way in chrome, to nuke all cookies, set by a visit to a perticular domain, (even if the cookies aren't for that domain?)
Basically I did a 'pop out' on a liveperson.net box which broke it
while visting virginmedia.net
now I've nuked cookies for virginmedia.net, and liveperson.net and lpsnsomething.net and still it doesn't go back to 'normal'

Bob
@djsmiley2k F12 devtools, Application tab, Storage => Cookies on the left

Bob
shows all cookies on the current site, including third-party
you still have to right click them individually to clear though

ty
or hit the 'clear storage' button ? ;)
hmmm, still not showing up, dafaq?
ah fook it, I'll poke at it from home.

9:27 AM
hey guys, how u doing? can I run a specific form (WinForms) on VS 2012 without loading other forms code and ignoring errors? In my current machine I can't have MySQL installed and my program is firing errors thatcan't find the assemblies..

no idea
probably not

@Burgi thanks, I'll probably have to comment all forms until I get home

Bob
9:42 AM
@djsmiley2k idk if that affects third-party

@Bob I manually deleted everything.
Still no change.

Bob
idk

10:05 AM
ok haha the hinge on this laptop just died entirely

Bob

Wooooooooo
educating users (at work) via facebook, using xkcd :D
boom.

@Boris_yo why do you reinvert the wheel? Why was it inverted to start with?

12:06 PM
@djsmiley2k nuke it from orbit try another computer, in a different country try from a different ISP change operating system change hard drive format different user profile reinstall Chrome delete all Chrome profile content clear storage what Bob said

:D
@Bob did give me the exact thing I was looking for
which is to see what that site has touched.
ah heh
Sooooooooooo it appears that even tho the scripts are loaded, the button doesn't show up on your 'my account page', only once you go to 'upgrade'

So how do I make this hugo thing work

A:
cd hugo1
hugo.exe

Pretty much
hugo serve -t what-a-nice-hugo-theme
www-browser http://localhost:1313
Then edit/add content and watch the page refresh itself every time you save :D
use git to clone the themes into the themes/ directory first, of course
Most themes will walk you through what you need to do to get the most out of them

you say 'add' content.
Am i writing it all as html?

The themes will have examples, typically (always) in the exampleSite/ directory
Can be a combo of HTML, markdown and/or Go as you see fit

12:55 PM
dog --no-spider --again --extra-wow --with-all-day-moderation --include-matrix=#ra:roota.cc --more-treats --handle-flags --disable-warnings --verbose --name=JourneymanGeek

The examples are the best way to go, IMO

@bertieb aww, when you embrace it it becomes less fun.
you should be like "NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO THAT'S MY IP"

Did I say 'feel free'..? I must have misspoke, what meant to say is "You can take my life, but you'll never take my freedoooooooooom username!"

1:48 PM
@Bob oh, right :D

Ave
So I moved to proxmox yesterday

Bob
2:04 PM
@Ave how is it?

Ave
It's quite good. I'm not even done moving everything and we're at 4 CTs already
and the bizarre systemd issue we were having didn't happen here yet
though right now our plex CT is using up all the cores we allocated to it though, it really gets your CPU rather unhappy when you give it ~6k songs.

Bob
@Ave CTs?
oh

Ave
container
You can run VMs or CTs. I think that VMs use QEMU/KVM and CTs definitely use LXC.
the frontend hasn't been too helpful for me though, other than creating, restarting and dropping to console of CTs
for example there's no way of moving from one storage to another storage, and a solution I found online is "take a backup and then restore", but just copying the images from old folder to new folder and editing the lxc file for that CT was my solution, it worked and it worked well.
you also can't pass on a whole drive from frontend, or disable apparmor on CT so that docker can run. I had to get all those working by editing the LXC files.
(yes, I know that docker inside CT is a big "but why?", but this package is much easier to set up that way and all our config [which took almost a day to get right] for it is based on the docker version)

Bob
@Ave yea I remember looking at it
but I chose LXD over proxmox's LXC layer

@Ave I use docker inside LXD containers; there's no real drawback and it's not a "but why" because there's zero overhead (aside from a few MB of base userspace) and many advantages

Ave
2:17 PM
well I agree
@Bob lxd on ubuntu server, I assume?

it can add up if you have very limited RAM or disk space, but for most use cases it's far less overhead than a VM or other techniques for conveniently configuring a package that needs its own environment and has particular version requirements, etc
docker is little more than chroot automation plus a private IP space and pid space, with a nice configuration front-end (and docker-compose is even better)

Ave
RAM is definitely not a problem
it's the exact opposite, actually. It's at 10gb and all the CTs and the software running only gets it to 2gb of use.

@GDPR Something something semantic debate over whether laws are regulations or vice versa

Bob
@Ave nah, LXD on snapd on Debian
In theory LXD supports Ubuntu best, but ... I run Debian :P

Ave
ah. i was considering debian but I'm not familiar with it enough.

Bob
2:22 PM
I like debian for a host cause it's pretty damn stable, though of course it can be a bit behind
ubuntu works fine for some containers though

Ave
and I was also considering lxd on ubuntu but...
I sorta like painful stuff.
and proxmox has been that.

Bob
I used to run ubuntu
10.04 and 12.04
dropped it for servers cause upgrades were always a pain

Ave
I used to have arch on my server, which is...
please never do that.
ever.

Bob
lol
@Ave funnily enough I rely on the Arch wiki

@Ave ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ave
2:25 PM
arch wiki is the best

Bob
for systemd and uefi, especially

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy heh.

Bob
debian wiki is alright but doesn't always have the latest stuff (e.g. great if you're looking for a network/interfaces config, not so much for systemd)
ubuntu wiki is ... dodgy
ubuntu wiki is like a collection of half-arsed tutorials by randoms

@GDPR there is meow who's name is GDPR ...
mmmhhh

Ave
@Bob this exactly.

2:28 PM
wdbgpu0010bbk

Ave
@CanadianLuke hm?

Wrong window...
Thought I was typing in another browser's Google

Ave
ah

Bob
ok, I got 2x 480 GB SSD
mirror or stripe?

Ave
what's the data and age of SSDs?

2:33 PM
@Bob Pack 'em and send 'em to me?

Bob
@Ave server SSDs for OS/container data, unknown age
will be in a ZFS pool

Ave
I'd say mirror.

Bob
actually I can probably grab something from SMART
my theory is that a sudden failure of one SSD is astronomically unlikely and I can probably restore from off-site backup in that event
a sudden failure of both SSDs is probably more likely, and would make mirror useless...
otoh, striping feels nasty :P
one sec I forgot my server IP

@Bob dns

Bob
Model Family: Intel 730 and DC S35x0/3610/3700 Series SSDs

that looks like a lot of NAND writes
@GDPR I will later - it's the new server so IP only for now
MWI is till 100% though
that can't possibly be 214747 * 32 MiB writes?
wait no that's only 7 TiB
that's fine :P

Ave
2:43 PM
@Bob problem with that is the fact that it may take a while to restore from backups.

Bob
the drive is ... 275 TBW so it'll probably last longer than I'll have this server
@Ave true, but technically this server isn't critical
bah, I'll mirror it

Ave
In our case when we had a massive issue on prod last week (all important data was corrupted), we had to spend ~30m just loading from backups, and oh boy did people yell at us.

Bob
anyone happen to know of a good way to mirror the ESP?
@Ave ah, this is a personal server
so I'd just be yelling at myself

Ave
ah, then it isn't a problem I suppose
you can just do stripe

Bob
O_O
this is amazing
and by an Arch user lol (@Ave)

2:47 PM
cept the last line?

Bob
there's something about daily struggles with weird and buggy OSes that force people to think and document

I used to duplicate my boot sector over different drives because raid 1
and raid 5/6

Ave
arch, at least on my laptop, is more stable than any OS I tried

never did it with efi tho.

Ave
on any sort of server, however... hahahhaa

2:49 PM
Gentoo!!! ;)

Ave
I spent 6 hours installing gentoo

Bob
@djsmiley2k it's a bit easier with legacy BIOS cause you never need to touch the stage 1 bootloader after install, and the stage 1 and stage 2 can handle reading mdraid arrays

Ave
then I realized I can't use it because I had uefi disabled but picked gpt at the start
didn't bother with restarting install

Bob
with EFI the partition needs to be a plain FAT32 partition
no tricks, no funny raid headers

@Bob if you had grub2....
I had grub0.97 :D

Bob
2:50 PM
@Ave I thought you could use grub-pc (bios) on gpt

Ave
@Bob it just kept throwing random errors

Bob
I cheated with my first dedi

Ave
and I gave up

Bob
the EFI partition was on a flash drive :D
unfortunately OVH doesn't do flash drives in their syd DC

Oh bleh, setting up nginx to cache Wordpress isn't a five minute job D:

I'm liking these speeds
(though gigabit would be better...)
@bertieb yas

@Ave That sounds awfully like a work environment but I thought you were only 18
@bertieb Yes, it can
If it's not work, just yell back at them. Louder.

Any downsides to using just nginx+WP rather than apache+nginx+WP? I mean, other than having to redo a bunch of stuff and figure out nginx's version of mod-rewrite?

3:06 PM
(Not that an 18yo person can't work or be professional it's just unusual for someone that age to have jobs other than entry level)

Ave
@bertieb I prefer having less stuff that can break, so I usually just do nginx+WP

If it's your case @ave then congrats

@bertieb not too much

@bertieb I don't usually use Nginx but from what I've heard, core works fine, some well written plugins detect Nginx and take advantage of it, some Bradly written plugins break

Cheers guys, hold my beer, I'm gonna figure out how to do this
Oh wait, plugins break you say

3:08 PM
Wait now who's this Bradly dude and what's he doing on my WordPress
2

Let's do this... carefully

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy it's simple, don't use Bradly's plugins

@bertieb No, I said I heard that badly written plugins might break

Bob
Phil's plugins will probably work fine
not too sure about Peter though, he's a dodgy one

I know personally a guy that wrote about 80 WP plugins

3:10 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Heard it from a guy, who knew this guy who knew this guy who knew this guy, you say

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy We run an online file hosting tool with ~92 users just in our project's discord (I can't give prod data due to the way we handled our GDPR stuffs), and overall we're better than most of our competitors in all areas but privacy, anonymity and domain count (privacy and anonymity because we don't want to be arrested if someone does a bad, about domain count, we have around 30 domains, competitors have around 40-50).

WooCommerce plugins to be more precise

Ave
We try to handle it really professionally and don't leave much to luck. So people have high expectations.
But it doesn't even pay for its bills soo... yeah.

Then he was hired by WooCommerce who later got acquired by Automattic
Last I heard he was team lead earning mad dollars

Bob
@Ave but... then... why? :S

Ave
3:12 PM
@Bob it's fun.

Bob
oh

Ave
And we believe that we can make stuff better and get the standards higher.
It was never designed to make money. It's a tool, not a product.

@Ave From your description I'm assuming it's a paid service

Ave
It's free with optional patreon/liberapay donations.

Cool
@Bob It's fun, she'll learn a lot and it will look awesome on her resume
If they earn a little money meanwhile, even better

3:15 PM
cya

@bertieb A bit less levels and the last level was supposedly a pro, but yeah, technically you're right, anything I don't test myself I can't exactly give an in depth opinion

Ave
Yeah. Just through this project I got much better at postgres and nginx, learned how to use redis and sanic, and well... figured out how to design a proper API and write flexible, extendable backend code.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Fair enough, but I just wanted to link to the spongebob thing :P
Agh I just bit my finger
5
Who knew toast could be so dangerous

@Ave ❤❤❤

3:19 PM
Wish I were like you when I was your age

@GDPR om nom nom

@bertieb I'm on mobile so I didn't even open it :(

I love that animal

Oh, is this like the elephant thing?
Where they suck their trunk as a comfort thing
(like sucking a thumb)

3:21 PM
@bertieb I can't follow-up to that conversation without going to matrix because I feel uncomfortable making off-color references in PC FlagWorld

To the batcave other place!
But yeah, I'm sure it's a thing with elephants at least

lol that's so cute

that is cuten't

@bertieb one of the wounded fingers?

3:30 PM
@bertieb My father in law once cut his finger open on a toasted crumpet.

@Burgi Nope! Well, it wasn't wounded before...
@djsmiley2k A crumpet made of dwarven bread, you say?

it it the same hand?
@bertieb WAS IT A SCONE OF STONE?

heh

@JourneymanGeek That's the one :D
Other hand
I like to spread the injuries around
True story: the week after the original injury I put my left hand above a wood furnace stove at friend's bbq - because I don't know, that's why - and it was hot
tl;dr I'm an idiot who probably shouldn't be allowed outside unaccompanied

o0
or just wear fireproof, cut proof bear proof gloves...
so if a bear eats you, at least they'll find the gloves

3:36 PM
@JourneymanGeek Hah :P

@bertieb So long running joke that I wear no shoes at friends bbq
i also help out, with the bbq.

Uh oh
I don't like the direction this is going
But... go on :D

I now have a nice scar on my foot, where I trod on a bit of something that had fell off.
:D

D:

3:37 PM
it's fun how fast something can melt your skin, so it's stuck there.

I like being barefoot as much as the next guy dog, but sometimes... shoes booties are a good idea.

BBQ's r srs buziness.

> melt your skin

batman probably has the right shoes for that

why do we have two bots?

3:45 PM

Well I've just stopped laughing from that

lol

Sorry everyone who got caught in the ping crossfire

@jokerdino we do?

we do?

@Bob thanks for the invite. I feel so valued XD

I think I found my new profile page bio

@bertieb mutation :)

3:48 PM
@bertieb Did u watch the videos of 'A way out' ?
I wnana know if the parachute scene is as a funny as it seemed to be.

@djsmiley2k The prison dealie? Haven't got to that one yet

yah
ok np

Only seen one so far

we littereally laaughed at it for 10 minutes
and I'm like 'was I accidently high?';
but even when I think about it now, it's still funny

lol\
lol

3:50 PM
@bertieb deja vu O_O

@jokerdino Huh, I got a timeout thing
You know, like the rate-limiting error when you send messages too quickly and you get the you can perform this action in 2s retry / cancel / edit

yep

Except it just said 'timeout', which I hadn't seen before, so I just hit 'retry'
Thought the other one didn't go through

yeah, sometimes it goes wonky

Ah, fair enough

3:53 PM
it goes wonky to me too @jokerdino

I assumed that it may have been related to the messages getting moved
shrug

why?

The ping spam was probably bad enough that it warranted two apologies anyhoo :P

yeah. I don't like the ping spam.

Bob
gaaaaaaaaaaaah
