@JarkoDubbeldam Thanks Ser Jarko.

I don't understand why people have such a hard time believing that Sam hasn't deserted

hmm?
In the show? I don't remember what he ended up doing exactly

Yeah show
Because he left the Citadel before completing his Maester training
But he's going to guard against the WWs and help the fight which is literally in his oath haha
And I believe his main reason to go, from Jon's POV, is to learn about beating them

10:04 AM
Well, that, and to replace Aemon

I think Jon's main reason, at least show, is for Sam to learn about dead. Jon was reluctant to let Sam go until he mentioned about learning about the dead. When it was just I want to become a Maester Jon didn't want to

hmm, in the books it was the other way around iirc. Jon sending him off

@JarkoDubbeldam c'est vrai
350 rep and I have yet to post anything this year... This is easy

I guess so
@TheLethalCarrot is this a self-answer?

10:18 AM
Maybe I've sort of found something but it's not explicit so I'm still looking

Mmmhm maybe

What was the quote you found. Because I've just found an indirect confirmation in a SSM

Though that one only has speculative sources, might add an answer there instead if you think it is a dupe
Mine is indirect too
9- It's not really a question, but I've noticed a great similarity between ASOS and Lord of the Rings - the two Sams, Samwell Tarly and Samwise Gamgee. In particular, in each series, a Sam made a desperate attack on a hopelessly superior force (an Other and the huge spider Shelob) to protect a defenseless companion (Gilly and her baby and the bound Frodo). Would you care to comment?

There are a number of homages to LOTR in my book. I am a huge Tolkien fan.

Ye, that one
Have you begun writing A Dance with Dragons? And if yes, when will it be coming out?

The next book will be out in fall, 2002.
LOL

10:22 AM
Hahaha
It's not explicit though so i am still looking

3 years off.
@TheLethalCarrot Either way they're dupes as they'd have to be answered in the other one.
So, do you want me to VTC or are you going to Delete it?

I'll delete and answer on the other

(y)
I could've used that rep though ;P
Takes you one closer to gold anyways

Yup
I need to beet Egg :P
Jan 4 at 13:36, by Aegon
I think I will cry if that happens

You need a beet egg?

10:29 AM
Hahaha
You back home now then ED or you still skiing?
Also is the help link been placed on the top bar for everyone now/

10:58 AM
The difference is 24!
@TheLethalCarrot back home, just look at the review page!
@TheLethalCarrot ye just saw that 10/10
Replaced the winterbash trash

Hahaha been busy then

Well I got a few over the holidays but I had a nice leave from SE, which I may continue through the year, and enjoyed my time in the real world

@TheLethalCarrot Good, I found that one too hard to find in the new layout

I realised how much time I wasted 0.0, I’ve also been tracking my hourly activities

@JarkoDubbeldam Oh yeah it was awkward when the new bar was first announced on SO I was the first to complain about it and now it's gone through live on all sites and lots of others have complained it's finally been changed
@Edlothiad Yeah it is good to spend time away, it's part of the reason I'm only really active during work hours

11:15 AM
I want to be able to just check in from time to time but otherwise not be looking, otherwise I just end up spending all my time wasted

Aye, I only really look for new GoT questions to answer and spend time in this room

I just trawl everything doing everything trying to find things to do, rather than seeing that it's dead, being like "cool I'll be productive" then coming back

Haha fair enough

What is the etiology of Greyscale? (What is its cause?)

11:26 AM
What is the *insert big word here* of x? (In case you don't have the same extreme intelligence as I do, or google-fu, it means 'what is its y?')

Oh right

It was a long-winded joke that took me a while to type out

I'm smart but others might not be so I'll add this dumb question in too

@TheLethalCarrot /r/Iamverysmart

11:27 AM
Have you been on that subreddit? Golden.

No might have a look in a bit though

> they get salmon, sweet potato, quinoa, green bean/peas, and a multi vitamin.
This guy feeds his dogs healthier than I feed myself...

A lot healthier than I feed me too haha
@Edlothiad Actually did you look at the edit history? it wasn't the OP that added dumb title
It went from "What are the ways one can contract Greyscale?" to "What is the etiology ofGreyscale?" and then someone else added the other bit on
Though they still added the IAmSmart word to look smart by the looks of it

11:53 AM
@TheLethalCarrot "aetiology"
He spelt it wrong... LOL

Q: Is there any way to see all my answers quoted by some other users?

AegonRecently I saw an answer from another user where they had quoted one of my answers within theirs. It felt nice. So that had me wondering, is there any way to see all my answers that are quoted elsewhere by some other users? I know I can go through all my answers and see the linked posts which...

"I want an ego boost, how can I get one"

That's.... hard

Hahaha

hard or harsh?

Harsh comment by you and the information is hard to find :P

@TheLethalCarrot mostly the latter

12:29 PM
Just answered a [ASOIF] question only, what an idiot :P
@JarkoDubbeldam I know, I added the former :)

I guess if I knew how regex and pattern matching worked in sql it'd be doable
but very heavy

It'd probably timeout that way

that's what I'd think

You'd have to hope people had added the source and search answers for the answer link

12:31 PM
Then account for user ids at the end of the link

or test for a specific post

@TheLethalCarrot Or not having user ids.

so only look for quotes from one post

If you got a list of all linked posts, matched them against a list of all your posts you'd get them all.

And then look for question links only (accounting for user ids) and look for people mentioning the user name
Then account for name changes

12:32 PM
ugh
sounds like a pain

To find them all is just too much of a headache

plus
something like
> and

I mean if you could hypothetically get the the link of every linked answer in a list

would likely match every single post

and then you just see if any of your posts are in that link

12:33 PM
hmm

like /a/9337, look if 9337 is in the link if yes it's been linked

and then hope everyone linked everything

Well they don't have to have linked everything
I mean it doesn't count as a reference to your answer if it's not got a link, right?
Aegon said there's 18 dragons so there is.

Well yeah you could essentially
1. Get all answers with links to other SFF Q or A
2. Rule out those that you have posted
3. Check all those Q/A's if you have an answer there
4 (optional). Rule out those that are direct links to answers that aren't yours
If you want it faster you'd do the general one which will give false positives
Or you'd have to filter down further

Do internal SE links get sanitised when they're posted?

12:36 PM
sanitised?

Because iirc there are multiple ways to link to a post
with question id in the link, without

3 ways really, share question (includes user id), share answer (includes answer id and user id) and share link to question
The link to the question may or may not have the title in it

hmm
and only the second one of those is of interest I assume?
oh no nevermind
not if you want to include quotes from questions
ugh

Or people quoting an answer but linking the question

@TheLethalCarrot People that do that are stupid.

12:40 PM
People are stupid

oh actually not,
question was only about linked answers
so that's only one url format to worry about

Only one formal format to worry about at least

ok, but let's not worry about false negatives for a moment
it becomes slightly more difficult when there are multiple quotes in the same post though

In the formal and happy path you'd look for all answers/questions that contain (question url/answer id/user id) strip the user id and then check if that answer is one of the OPs
Though I suppose you don't really need to strip the user id

yep
hmmm, which exact language does SEDE use?
MySQL?

12:53 PM
SEQL

t-sql from the looks of it
which doesn't have regex, only the like operator
q.q

Not StackExchange QL?

hmm, my replace doesn't want to cooperate :/

1:12 PM
Could you search in the reverse look for all OP's answers and then do a search for answers containing the link?

hmm
possible
But what surprises me is that there are only like 2k posts that match the url
where Body like '%scifi.stackexchange.com/a/%'
returns like 1900 results
but the difficult step is getting the Id from the url
especially since it is not fixed length

Exactly you can get post id from SEDE directly so where post.userid = userid select post.id' then where post.text contains '%scifi.stackexchange/a/post.id%`?
Something like that anyway

hmm
so that's the other way around

let's see

1:23 PM
Just got a call from HR where she was speaking french and I had no idea what she was saying then it took about 2 minutes till they started speaking English

That's fun then

Whew. You'd think they'd have a note somewhere saying "dumbo only speaks English"

You would assume so haha

doesn't seem to be really fast
yep
timeout
hmm
running it on specific posts is decently fast
10 seconds
but I've yet to find a post that actually returns a result

Egg will have to do it himself then :P

1:38 PM
oooh
found one
scifi.stackexchange.com/a/164152/
quotes scifi.stackexchange.com/a/128221
much better now

Ah nice

2:06 PM
@JarkoDubbeldam I came up with this so far but it times out
with Answers as (
  select t.Id as Id
  from Posts t
  where t.OwnerUserId = ##UserId##
)

select p.Id
from Posts p
inner join Answers a on p.Body like concat('%scifi.stackexchange.com/a', a.Id, '%')
where P.OwnerUserId != ##UserId## and P.PostTypeId = 2

You want to filter on if there is any reference before joining
else it is way too many comparisons in the like statement
seems to work

Yeah I know that's why it's slow

Does all posts by the users, and checks if they selfquoted or not

I'm just not the best with sql

me neither
especially not with t-sql

2:12 PM
Egg's posted to mother meta if you want to leave an answer there with your efforts so far

Q: How can I view all of my answers that are quoted elsewhere in someone else's answer?

NSNoobRecently I saw an answer from another user where they had quoted one of my answers within theirs. It felt nice. So that had me wondering, is there any way to see all my answers that are quoted elsewhere by some other users? I know I can go through all my answers and see the linked posts which m...

was writing up
woops
initially posted it on the scifi meta question
gotta have that rep

You can leave it on both haha

substring(Q.Body, patindex('%scifi.stackexchange.com/a/%', Q.Body) + 26, 7) as Quote,
this is so ugly
im proud of it

What's it doing exactly? Extracting scifi.stackexchange.com/a/userid?

it's extracting the 7 characters after scifi.stackexchange.com/a/
ie the postid

2:18 PM
Ahhh okay, what if it isn't 7 in length though?
I'm not sure it has to be 7

that's the problem ye
but the id is at max 6
on scifi at least
+ / makes 7

Ahh okay

which then nicely matches cast(P.Id as varchar) + '/%'
so ugly, I love it

@Edlothiad Heh that's an accurate summary. :D

2:24 PM
Hey Egg

Hey TLC

Nice answer you linked to :P

Jesus, far too much wholesomeness for one day
I think I'm going to cry at work.

Weird, I did not get the SFF meta answer notification.
So @TheLethalCarrot Has quoted me the most times. Thanks bud!

hmm, too bad SEDE has pretty limited regex options :/

2:37 PM
@Aegon No worries, doing my part :P

Q: Why did the show appear to swap Casterly Rock and Highgarden?

TheLethalCarrotI've recently got a copy of The World of Ice and Fire and although I haven't had the time to read it yet I have had a quick flick through. One thing I've noticed that seems odd is that the castles of Casterly Rock and Highgarden seem to have been swapped for the show. The following are the castle...

As you can see the shows Casterly Rock looks very similar to the books Highgarden but just on the edge of a cliff instead of in a garden area. Whereas the shows Highgarden looks like a much more scaled down version of the books Casterly Rock.
How? Idk Casterly Rock is on the coast
High Garden is amidst greenery and has a running river nearby which can be called Mander (Although it is no where near as big)
Of course they couldn't get a proper Casterly Rock, nothing like that exists in our world
It's a Rock primarily after all
Am I missing something here? Because it doesn't look like they swapped anything, to me

so would Casterly Rock be easy or hard to lay siege on? I guess the rockyness makes sorties hard to pull off

The actual castles not the locations
Also George has said Casterly Rock was inspired from Gibralter rock

@JarkoDubbeldam Impossible really, Visenya Targaryen thanked the gods when she saw the Rock that Lannisters fought in the field instead of closing their gates
You could starve the defenders though but you would need to lay the siege both from sea and land

@Aegon And then hope that the mines don't go under your feet and exit on the other side of you haha
Though in that question I mainly meant Highgarden, just compare the castles
And the show Highgarden does look like a very very scaled down Rock

2:49 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Could you elaborate on that? I spent the whole day arguing with other devs

@Aegon hmm, then why did they?

@JarkoDubbeldam Cus they thought, together the Northmen, Reachmen and Westermen could finish the Targaryens even with their dragons

@Aegon Well just look at the shows Casterly Rock and the books Highgarden. To me the castles look almost idesntical

@TheLethalCarrot Ohhhh you mean the basic round shape of the outer wall and the towers, got it

The turrets, it's layers, the main keep, it's white
Just looking at the two they look the same

2:51 PM
And who are you, the proud lord said, that I should bow so low, only a mount of a different (?) size (?), that's all the truth I know.

@JarkoDubbeldam They were on their way to meet their allies. Reachmen made it, Lazy Northmen were late as per fricking usual. Gardener King died with his whole family, Loren Lannister legged it, Stark came late and bent the knee
@TheLethalCarrot Yup, I see your point now

I know the Rock is next to impossible to do without CGI but Highgarden (show) does look like a small rock with a castle on top and closer to what I imagined the rock to look like than what they actually went for haha
It was just one of those things that when I saw it I couldn't unsee it and it made me go "Eh? What were they thinking?"

@TheLethalCarrot I think that happened every other minute while watching the last season.

Oh of course but most of them can be explained by money/time
This looks like a swap which makes no sense

Or the lack of concern for maintaining high standards established in earlier seasons

2:55 PM
@Aegon :/

I just get back from vacation, and my boss is like, "you know that project you have been working on since september? Yeah, it urgent priority now, we need it to get done asap."
On the bright side, I might get to have someone helping out now

I'm glad my boss didn't say that to me, I haven't done anything today

Welcome back amf, have a good one?
I've seen various answers on the site that seem to suggest Will escaped the White Walker's because he ran. However, when you watch the prologue back Will falls to his knees and accepts his fate when the WW is right next to him and has just chucked Gareds head to him.
It seems like the WW actually did spare Will, anyone else think he was spared or do you think he ran away?
(show obviously)

3:11 PM
in show it seems he was spared, yes
which plays nicely into the War for the dawn ended in some kind of truce that has now been broken

Though does it? Cos they killed the other 2

cause dead men tell no tales
need 1 alive to pass the story
its a warning

mmmhm suppose

@Skooba what's the point of warning though? Did the wws have anything to gain from that, versus a surprise attack. Sure, they might have ended up with a dragon eventually, but I doubt they foreseen that

@JarkoDubbeldam Oh don't mind me.I just love complaining

3:16 PM
@Aegon nah, I was sharing your disappointment
I've been rereading and rewatching, and the earlier seasons are pretty close to the book.

In the main details yes
They changed a lot of small details
Like Gared and Will and added the archery scene in etc and that's all the first 10 mins
The whole finding direwolf thing is different too

@TheLethalCarrot was it?
don't remember tbh

Sort of yes
Different people doing/saying different things
e.g. Books Jon finds Ghost and says he's his, show Theon finds him and mocks Jon
Or the other way around can't remember exactly

Me on books

3:19 PM
Me on show

shouldn't that be "I want GoT"?

Oh gods no
I don't GoT as it is now anymore than I want the grey plague

maybe I misunderstand, but isn't deeper, better and superior referring to the books
and sansa being whiny and such still preferring the show?

Yup, that's for when someone suggests that X book is better than ASOIAF

seems to me that otherwise the I don't want doesnt make sense

3:21 PM
They're taking longer with season 8 so that either means it'll be better for book readers OR they're going to go all in on the special effects and ignore plot completely
I think I know where they are going to go

well, there is no way to know until the next book(s) are released

@JarkoDubbeldam well the dragon by that point is just escalation because the warning was not headed.

maybe we'll have jon snow flying in with a jet fighter and it turns out it actually is like that in the books
mayhaps

@TheLethalCarrot Jon takes one dragon, Dany takes the other, they fry NK to the crisp and make beautiful inbred babies, Cersei die, Jaime and Brienne get together
Can't predict Sansa's future.
THE END

@Skooba You're not of the White Walkers are greenseers group are you?

3:23 PM
@Aegon No, Tormund deserves Brienne!!!

@Skooba then jaime gets sansa

TQaT are Team Tormund all the way!
:P

@Skooba He can have Jorah Mormont. Closest thing to a bear

Is he though? haha

@TheLethalCarrot Well, showverse does imply it... at least NK is... head interacted with Bran in a green-dream

3:24 PM
Tyrion gets Sansa
Sansa suddenly realizes she just wuvz Tyrion.

@JarkoDubbeldam Jaime kills Cersei but is also killed in the attempt

And they make meh okay children

I'm shipping Arya and Gendry too

@Skooba I was gonna say Arya and Big Walder, but are the walders even in the show?

@Skooba mmhm suppose I hope not though
@Skooba As long as you don't ship Jonsa we're all good

3:27 PM
@Skooba You are a cruel man Jack Sparrow

@JarkoDubbeldam I highly doubt it

@TheLethalCarrot Are there people who actually do that?

@TheLethalCarrot Jon and Sansa? thatd be terrible

I'm not sure if there are any that take it seriously but it's definitely a theory

I am putting it right next to Aurane Waters is a Aerys II's bastard

3:28 PM
@Aegon I don't see any lasting use for Jaime once he fulfills the Valonqar theory

@Skooba I stand corrected, you are a very cruel man Jack Sparrow, to dash my hopes like this

Also will there be an urgent dispatch from Mereen that Dany has to weigh options against. cause o have her spend all hat time there and just drop it like a hot potato.... although this is the show.....

Remember the days where unanswered tab had a number of questions? Before TLC arrived? Now there are only two. And one is his

It's show and Essos isn't important anymore

@Aegon well he does have give himself a nice whitebook entry first

3:30 PM
@Aegon Lol, like I said I do my best :)

@Aegon i only ever remember like 2
maybe not the same two

@Skooba Really? Idk I seem to remember there used to be 6+

@JarkoDubbeldam NO! NONONONONO

This question is still unanswered but I have an unscored answer on it
(Shameless answer plug)
Though it's not the best answer it's all I could find

@Edlothiad Are you Team Tyrion then?

3:32 PM
I'm Team I Hope Sansa Dies

@TheLethalCarrot Well that's cause there really isn't any answer other than We do not know
@TheLethalCarrot Harsh, why tho?

Oh I know
@Aegon Don't like the whiny character (from show perspective, haven't got far enough in the books yet)

@Aegon i’m team Ed!

Lol, who would have guessed that

@TheLethalCarrot She no longer whines in the show tho, does she?

3:34 PM
@TheLethalCarrot that line that jumps out at me is "The weight of him tore the strange pale sword from the Other's grip."

@Edlothiad Edd Tollett, what a guy!

i dont know wy tho

@Aegon Sort of, still mopey and moans a lot. And is extremely naive
I just don't like her

@TheLethalCarrot oh boy.... so many NSFW directions i could take that

Lol
If LF had his way, which Sansa fell for, we'd have had that
The whole Sansa S7 arc makes no sense either. She trusts LF completely and goes against Arya and then Bran says "You're an idiot Arya is right and LF is not"

3:36 PM
@TheLethalCarrot she is responsible for a lot of bad stuff happening. If she doesn't go to Cersei maybe Ned and the girls get out of the city....

@Aegon If not Ed of House Lothiad then the Dolorous will have to do...

@TheLethalCarrot and that like 1 episode after she says "only a fool would trust little finger"

Exactly she's Naive and trusts everyone she shouldn't and has no trust in those she should do

the show makes it seem like she was to realize it on her by playing the motives game.... but they admitted they had a cut scene with her going to bran

She played LF and the audience. She’s a mastermind, and the greatest character ever written.

3:38 PM
Lol that's a lie and you know it
Bran told her otherwise she would have trusted LF above Arya

Well in ASOIAF, because Rohanne Webber is the greatest character ever written

And that as well only in Planetos because Frodo is Bae!

He ain't a red head though is he? :P
Also Frodo in the films is such a mopey git too

Nah Frodo’s got gorgeous brown locks #FrodoWoreThemBetter

3:39 PM
Lol

I don’t know if there are redheads in TL
There was Mahtan but i’m Pretty sure he was one of a kind

Is Gimli?

Pfft dunno
Maybe, I don’t know how often hair is described when not for Hobbits or Elves

Boromir is or is just a light brown
Though I'm going via films here

Brown

Side note: The 2018 dev survey is open if anyone wants to have a look

3:54 PM
Survey question If you could change anything about Stack Overflow, what would it be?
My answer Better moderation i.e. better tools to rule out the flood of shite coming in

3 hours later…
7:09 PM
hmmm
do we actually know that dragonglass doesn't affect wights? I see (and have used) the Mellisandre quote about "fie and steel will serve" but this is after Sam says the dragonglass didn't work.... however, did Sam actually ever touch dragonglass to a wight?
When he encounters Small Paul the blade hits the mail armor... not the skin... "Shards of dragonglass flew everywhere as the blade shattered on the iron mail beneath the wool."

2 hours later…
9:37 PM
Dragonglass does affect wights showverse
Really -2 here? I really don't think the distinction between annulment and divorce is that important to the question...
-2
A: Is divorce allowed in Westeros?

TheLethalCarrotYes Spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7.
