Coming back to the blog thing, are you willing to switch to monthly rather than weekly?
10:00
It seems like that would be less pressure.
10:11
(actually, never mind, I see it's one of those "post them when they're ready" style things rather than a periodical)
10:27
I'm trying to find the name of a UI component, but I just can't get the right keyword
Here's an image of it
it's the thing on the right
the best name I could come up with is "scrolling gauge"
anybody seen something like that before?
@Adnan iPhones have a specific control for that, hang on I'll see if I can find out what they call it.
They just call it a UIPicker, but it's primarily for text
that would be great, thanks :)
The thing is, I'm trying to create an element like that with Javascript and CSS
I just want to see if someone did something like that before
it's basically to visualize Ajax-fed values
I'm having extremely bad luck finding its name
Yeah, I guess it'll have to be a custom control - I can't find any specific details for this used outside of iOS
10:43
I'm sure there's something like that in the physical world
Jay
Jay
@Adnan I've just seen it as a UIPicker or Picker. However your control has the added color element to the right. Added line detail in the values etc.
like on a gas tank or something
no need for the color stuff
just like a ruler the scrolls up and down
and there's a needle that points to something
I'm fairly sure it's called a spinner.
I think we even have a tag for it as a control.
I feel so helpless :D , this is the first time I just can't find something on Google because i don't know what to search for
Of course there may be no popular name for it. :S
Jay
Jay
10:46
@Adnan That might be a Linear Gauge
@Jay yaaaaaaaaaay :D
Oh, my mistake, a spinner would be a control that allows you to pick a value rather than displaying one.
Jay
Jay
however 'retro' doesn't quite cut it as a description ;)
that's the EXACT physical world application I was looking for
Jay
Jay
@Adnan Yeah, I remembered an old tuner / amp my father had that used those gauges. Also older medical equipment.
10:56
Thank you all for your help!
By the way, this is what I have so far
if someone is interested
maybe it will be useful to someone
@dhmholley A spinner could be confused with a 'page loading' type spinner though.
@JonW You're absolutely right. I think we may need a better name.
I'm thinking of a slot-machine spinner, maybe searching for stuff around that will locate a term?
Something like a spinning reel?
@JonW, oh my lord!
of course slot-machine spinner
ah! we have them everywhere in Finland
hehehe
Anyway, I've already found it using the magic keyword.. Linear Gauge
@Adnan That's probably fine for a flat one, but probably not if you want it more 3D, but yes, it's not bad.
11:09
@JonW, you're right, but in my case the targeted users are in the industrial biz
so maybe a ship captain who's looking for any kind of indication
actually the main problem I currently have is that I'm generating the ticks on page load
which caused a huge problem with big ranges (ended up with 10000 new dom elements)
anyway, I'll keep working on it. Thank you all big time.. awesome guys!

1 hour later…
12:18
@Adnan Do they have to be dom elements? Couldn't they be a repeating background image?
12:58
@SamHasler, they don't have to, but it's preferable for scaling
actually the first "version" had repeating images
I'm currently working on generating only the displayable ticks
13:12
@dhmholley yeah, but we do want to have a reasonably stable release window. Monthly + when ready would be just fine
@dhmholley oddly iOS calls their spinning UI a picker, and Android calls their picking UI a spinner
Though I think spinner came first; I just think it's funny the most common spinner implementation that actually spins isn't called a spinner
I think we should just start calling it a spicker.
Actually no
:D
That is a terrible idea
13:16
it is
I'll stick to calling them Scrolling Gagues
so TIL that a decal is not the same thing as a sticker
which I sort of already knew, but I didn't think about the fact that the two are different when I wrote my answer
However I suspect no-one actually cares outside of the printing industry
13:35
burn >:D
13:51
> Should I include my farmville achievements on my CV?
Someone asked that on workplace
guess I should have posted it before I deleted it
...wow
Sure hope that was trolling.
> They keep asking me what I have been doing in the past 8 months.
At least they're being honest
managed to be our lowest voted question in just 12 hours, RIP
> I have played a lot of FarmVille while between job searches. I am thinking it would be good to explain the 8 month gap in my current unemployment. Should I put this in my portfolio or my work experience section? Thanks. Also add me on facebook for neighbors!
Top voted answer: "You don't deserve to get a job. DIAF"
(in my head)
There are some comments to that effect
I didn't feel the need to trim them due to the content of the question
14:53
nice touch; in the new review layout the action buttons are disabled for a moment as the content loads, so you can't just spam clicking delete/looks good
I wonder if it yells at you if you click it while it's disabled like that
neat
Yeah, kuler is pretty cool. Hard to find a good real life application unless you're a graphic designer, though.
15:09
I might use it to pick a color scheme for my parent's site...no existing color associations for the brand
@SamHasler yeah, had that one bookmarked for a while

Some start-ups really do need marketing and UI help: humandemand.com
It wouldn't take too much there to rid it of the amateur feel.
a quote at the end of the page: "which company name and which design are you going to remember? Exactly."
But it's a slick design!

Being a 'Rockstar' is one thing 'Elvis cover band' is another.
it doesn't matter that none of it fits together
@BenBrocka What are your profile pics from?
15:41
do you draw them?
ooh, new prinny
It's like they paid 5 designers to make 5 different designs and taped them together
Jay
Jay
@BenBrocka And then said "It needs more POP".
@MattRockwell Nah, they're official art from Nippon Ichi Software. They're Prinnies. I wish I could draw that well
:For "Prinny" as a historical nickname, see George IV of the United Kingdom. are a fictional race of creatures in Nippon Ichi's video games. First appearing in ', they have appeared in all later titles by the company, as well as on various merchandise such as hats and plush toys. With a few notable exceptions, they are voiced by Junji Majima in Japanese releases and Grant George in the English releases from Disgaea: Hour of Darkness to Disgaea Infinite, and by Dave Wittenberg in Trinity Universe, but it is unknown if either Grant George or Dave Wittenberg will reprise the role in the upco...
@Jay they're an Elvis cover band, a corporate marketing department, a web 2.0 social media site and something I can't quite identify, all rolled into one
Demonic penguins which love sardines and housework, and explode when you throw them.
15:45
For some things I'd love a touch screen on my car's display, but for anything I need to do while driving I damn well better have a physical control
You'd be better off having the car drive for you most of the time to be honest.
Roll on the self-driving cars, I say.
then you can sit back and play Angry Birds or whatever and everything will be fine

I'm looking for a place to see well designed, advanced user interfaces. The ones beyond what you would typically see on the web. E.g. F1 telematics, military applications, market trading apps etc. These seem hard to come by. Many of the places I go for inspiration are great for common UI elements.
Any tips?
@dhmholley Well hell yes, but that's not an option quite yet. Though I do enjoy driving the Mercedes
@Jay Hmmm, not sure about that. IT's true that most places tend to be made to show off either individual UI elements or boring landing pages that look pretty but don't show the meat of the interaction
Jay
Jay
@BenBrocka True. They often have the luxury of simplicity. I want to see someone dealing with complexity and winning :)
A problem is the more complex a UI is, the less reusable it's "patterns" become; the whole design works because of everything and all interactions, not just because your radio button is the best damn radio button in the world
Jay
Jay
@BenBrocka And I suspect the more protected by confidentiality.
yeah, many aren't public/consumer facing apps
16:36
speaking of car UIs, is it common now to have controls on the steering wheels? Mine has next track/switch app/volume buttons on the wheel you can hit with your thumb. Awesome feature, I don't recall seeing another car with that though
Yeah, that's fairly common in new cars apparently
right, off home I think
@dhmholley Makes sense. Haven't been in all too many new cars, and mercedes tends to be a few years ahead in the fancy stuff (mine's 2006)

Q: why we need multi-column page layout? Why we do need sidebars?

lovespringSome websites only have one column. Some websites have multi-columns. So why we need sidebar, or why we need multi-column page layout in web /print media ? Is there any UX principles?

Not a real Question?
19:07
Anyone here good with Jira and Confluence?
@dnbrv not familiar with either
