huh, two psych questions in a row, both closing candidates. Weird coincidence. Does this nevertheless indicate that parenting.SE is beginning to appear as a place to go for good answers, for new users? That would be nice.
Thinking of these things suddenly makes me feel very old... I knew by the sound of the dialup noise how far through the handshake it was, and whether it was going to succeed or fail. I've seen interlaced GIFs take minutes to load. I have used a rotary phone. And 33rpm records. At Microsoft, I worked to keep default.htm+images under 170kB. That's so ... analog. So yesterday.
I can't even begin to tell my son about this; he's got no reference. I imagine that seeing a Chaplin clip, he'd turn around and ask me if I hand-cranked my car too. (Today's cars don't even have a place to stick the ignition key.)
@Beofett My dad had a 300 baud duplex modem that you could switch to simplex and get 1200 baud. It was a big red metal box with a foam top that had two circular cut-outs for the handset of your regular rotary phone ... how else could a modem be connected to the phone line?
@HedgeMage I love your "oooh, freedom!" answer - link - that's exactly what we're facing right now. I was going to post a new question, but this actually covers it. I noticed that I had run out of votes and prompty voted on this one!
We want to switch to a bed this weekend (starting Friday evening). His cot has removable spokes and we tried removing them earlier so he could crawl out, but he never stayed inside so we put the spokes back in place. He learned to remove them himself so we've turned the cot around so that the opening faces the wall. Since our son is very likely to NOT stay in his bed, we're considering to put up a gate in his room's door.
I wonder if we're too early with the bed thing, but he often tries to climb out, and during daytime playing he manages to climb in by way of a pillow leaned against the outside of the cot - but he cannot climb out again because the mattress is very low. Given that he's already climbing over the edge, we're taking that as a sign that it IS time to upgrade to a bed. I'm not sure what to decide.
... maybe I should open a new question after all, since I might be able to ask a more specific question than the one that already exists (and few users see this chat room but many see the site). OTOH some eager mod might close it as duplicate? :-)
