namely, whether or not the closed question should've been closed, or whether the answers answer it.

that's something that might warrant a solid canonical question/answer written up; mostly just a question making it better than whatever's already out there.

the existing answers on the closed question are both somewhat useful, but also both incomplete. there's a lot of room for improvement there.
