crontab is deprecated in MacOS X but still exists.

jrg
@daviesgeek it works, but its so hackish its only for the die hards.
And the die hards are on the site all the time, so they don't need it. :P
@DanielL Really? Sadface.

Oh.
launchd is the alternate thingy for crontab
(sorry, couldn't come up with a better word)

jrg
I'll post the crontab version now, and try to figure out a launchd alternative tomorrow or something.
(its ok, i think we've all been there before)

launchd is the alternate "unified, open-source service management framework for starting, stopping and managing daemons, applications, processes, and scripts." to crontab
that better?
Finally!! I can vote and clear up the 12 tabs I have open!
@DanielL @NathanGreenstein Is it just me and the time that I check, or do we rarely get suggested edits?

jrg
@daviesgeek not just you guys if you rarely get suggested edits
there are very few SE communities out there that have a vibrant suggested edit community. :P

12:08 AM
Really? Odd.

jrg
Although everyone will gladly flag for a moderator to edit! :P

Haha!
I'd rather suggest an edit and get the rep ;-)

jrg
<----- was guilty of that heinous crime. Now he's stuck at the beck and call of the users

There are, on average, 12-13 suggested edits per day. Not a ton, you're right.

@jrg It's been superseded by launchd

Gotcha.
OK, i'll look into it tomorrow and edit.

Q: What's the OS X equivalent of a BSOD?

JavaAndCSharpAs a Windows user, I've seen my share of BSODs. I've also seen some errors from Macs, but as I haven't used them as long, I don't really know what the Mac OS X error screens are like. I've seen some kernel panics and some other error screens, but what I want to know is which one is the basic equ...

All it takes is one Google Images search.

5:31 AM
Yes!! Made level 2! :D

Congrats.
@TimothyMuellerHarder Answering your Q on EL&U as we speak.
Actually, scratch that.
My premise is a little flawed.
Well, we'll see.
Nope, I give up.

5:52 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder Congrats!

I changed my mind again and did post an answer.
It must be one of those days.

@Mahnax There definitely is a difference in definition. I think of "especial" to mean the same thing as special mostly, but also carrying a "more so" connotation, such as "That is my especial favorite." To me, "special" could be used there, but it leaves other meanings open.

@TimothyMuellerHarder I just spent ten minutes poring through the OED definitions (probably the most authoritative resource out there) and the definitions said nothing about emphasis.
However, I have to agree that I would use especial to place more emphasis.

David FauxWhen I start up my MacBook Air, it makes a loud startup sound unless I muted the computer prior to shutting down last time. However, I cannot guarantee that I had muted the computer last time before shut down because I share this Air with others. How do I start up my Mac silently?

I'm confused....

6:07 AM
@gentmatt Me too.

Yeah, but I'm too exhausted to discuss this now. I just got up :) Maybe laters.

Ah, you're in Europe, then.
Well, most likely.

Yes, I'm from Germany.
8:09 AM over here

Cool. I'm half Finnish, which is like being European.

haha!

6:09 AM
The other half of me is a pleasant mixture of Dutch and Swedish.

Do you have two passports? Dual-citizenship?

No, but I plan to get dual citizenship when I turn 18.

Cool.
Do you know if that will require some finnish duties by you?

Yeah, only problem is I'm not too keen on the whole idea of conscription.

Military service?

6:11 AM
@gentmatt Yes, I believe it's 6 months of military service.
Or community service, but most people do military.

We got the same in Germany.

Have you done yours?

Some find it fun. Other's don't. I've done civil service instead.

If you don't mind my asking, that is.
Apparently Finnish citizens get free university, so I'll have to look into that.
I plan on getting a Ph.D.

It's probably not totally free, but I guess it's similar to what we have over here in Germany.

6:14 AM
Yeah, nothing is totally free, but it's probably cheaper than it is here.

Here's my case:
Fees were 500€ per semester. That has been dropped now.

Dropped to what?
Or just removed entirely, perhaps?

Besides this, there were other costs of ~300€ for other requirements of the university.
(also per semester)
Living etc. costs me 500-600€ per month.

Okay.

@Mahnax 0€.

6:16 AM
@gentmatt Oh, nice.

Scholarships are rare in Germany. I got close, but failed in the second last round :(

Aww.
What were you taking?

I'm still enrolled in the university. I'm studying physics.

Cool!

What's your plan?

6:18 AM
I've been trying to decide between maths and physics.

That's an easy one :) - go for the phyics.
You'll still do plenty of math then.

I haven't had much experience with physics yet (first year high school has almost no physics).
I will probably wait until a year from now to decide.

Physics at the university is really nuts....

Why?
Nuts as in hard?
Or just silly?

It not at all like what I had at school. Much more difficult and much more abstract.
There were weeks where I was studying 50h+

6:20 AM
I'll be taking IB physics, so hopefully it'll be closer to university level than the average physics class.

What's IB?
Oh, i see.

It's an advanced program that aims to prepare high school students for university.

International Baccalaureate.

Not quite ;)
Baccalaureate.

Yeah ;) strange word.

6:22 AM
I agree.

Is that the same as a bachelor? I just read that this is a collage bachelor.
I have never heard of this title before.

Anyways, the program requires the students to take an extra class called "Theory of Knowledge" and write a 4000 word essay using original research on a topic of the student's choice, but within a certain scope.
@gentmatt Nor have I, actually.

"Theory of Knowledge"???

Yes.
"What is knowledge?"

A theory on a theory :)

6:25 AM
Yeah, it's a highly subjective class. I'd vote to close right away.

But the idea is nice. I'd like to do research on something that only I want.

IB students have to take higher level classes that go beyond the regular 30 level in high school, as well.
The higher level classes available depend on your school.
At my school, I will take higher level English, Biology, and World History.

I studied a year abroad in Kansas City when I was in High School. There I took AP classes. Is that similar?

AP is IB's less-intense competitor :P
The two programs have different focuses.

Interesting! How do they differ?

6:29 AM
IB aims to build a group of students that is active in the community, prepared for university, and can interpret and apply vast amounts of knowledge.
Whereas AP sounds like it's just extra content.

That sounds more fun :) I wish I had had the chance to take IB classes. But I don't recall that something like this was offered. I could only take AP physics and AP calculus

IB can be a full program, or individual classes. I'm doing the full program.
You get a special internationally recognized diploma.

Is this a public high school?

Yeah.

Ooh, IB!
I did IB.

6:32 AM
Ah, I've heard of those before.

@jtbandes And how was it?

@Mahnax Sometimes a lot of work, but I enjoyed the courses and it's prepared me well for my college.
i.e. I'm used to the workload

:) That does count a lot in high education.
Sometimes, I feel like I'm a slave of the university. But I enjoy working hard. It makes you happy.
How long does high school with IB last?

4 years, as usual. The IB Diploma Programme is actually a 2-year program.

In Germany school lasts 13 years (but they are lowering it to 12 now). I went to German school for 11 years. Then I did a US high school diploma. After that I had to take 2 more years at the German "Gymnasium" to get the "Abitur".

6:37 AM
So at my school I just did regular stuff for 2 years and then started more IB classes and other IB requirements.

How many years do you go to school in total?

@jtbandes I agree with the lot-of-work thing. I'm currently on spring break and my IB homework was to do two full lab reports.

12 years in the US (grades 1–5 elementary school, 6–8 middle school, 9–12 high school)

@gentmatt In AB, Canada, 12.
1-6, 7-9, 10-12 here.

Nice. It makes sense that the time get's shortened now.
In Russia school is even shorter still.

6:39 AM
I'm in grade 10, but in order to fit all the IB stuff into my schedule, I have to take two classes early.

I think they have only 10 years before they can start studying at the university.

So I'm doing Bio 20IB and Physics 25IB (a physics 20IB prep course).

What do the numbers mean?

@gentmatt Number system works like this: 10 = grade 10, 20 = grade 11, 30 = grade 12.

(by the way, I just noticed a mistake from earlier. I first took 10 years at the German school...)

6:41 AM
25 is a silly number for this, since it's supposed to go between 10 and 20.
No, the numbers do not determine the semester.
Just the year.

Ok.

I still think that his should be closed.

I am going to learn this sport.

The Macbook Air is no different in this behavior than other Macs, right?
@Mahnax That just looks.... :)

@gentmatt It's awesome!

I can't perform such a sport. I'm too muscular....

6:51 AM
Haha.

You need to be light an skinny to jump like that.

I'm a little burly to be jumping around like that myself, actually.
I pride myself on staying fit, but doing that sport would be ridiculous.

I like to cycle my MTB instead. I also play underwater rugby.

I ride BMX and enjoy skiing and running.

Cool! Another cyclists!
That's always a good sign.

6:54 AM
Yep, bikes is funz!
I ride mine to school every day when it is not rainy or cold.

To me, sports need to take place in nature. That's why i usually go to the Alps during my breaks.
And do this:

Actually, sometimes when it is rainy and cold.

@Mahnax Me too!

@gentmatt I love riding my bike anywhere, but mountain biking in the mountains is so fun.
Unfortunately, mountains are a good four hours away from me and I have no friends or family with a shared passion for such things.
@gentmatt Is that your video?

Riding above the clouds in the valley is one of the best feelings you can have :)
@Mahnax No, but it would be very similar.

7:00 AM
@gentmatt Ah, okay.

Except, I usually ride in a group of no more than three people.

Same here.
Usually I ride alone or with one other person.

Seems like riding on such terrain would be pretty jarring if you're doing it for a long period of time.

Sometimes two.

@jtbandes Bike maintenance is an important part of this. It's takes a lot of time (and money)
You need an optimum suspension setup.

7:02 AM
Nice thing about BMX bikes is they require few complicated things.
I can do all my repairs easily, myself.
Then again, most serious mountain bikers can too.

Yeah :)
I just wish that there were more women who cycle MTBs...

Hahaha.

It sucks, right?

Okay, yes, it does.
There is a skatepark here, but it is filled with obnoxious people.

uuuuh.

7:05 AM
Hm?

Pot is nice and bad.
(But let's not talk about it here)

Yeah, not the place. I would just like to point out that it is illegal here, and as such, I do not partake.
I'm not sure about its status in Germany.

It's illegal at the moment.

Ah, okay.

The only place I can think of where this is legal is the Netherlands - where I've been once to do such naughty thing.

7:07 AM
And Portugal.
@gentmatt tsks

And probably some south american and asian countries...

Use an em-dash: —

@Mahnax I did not know that, but that's interesting.

@gentmatt Lots of drugs are legal there, actually.

Oh là là!
Let's change the topic back to this one question...

Q: How do I silently start up my MacBook Air?

David FauxWhen I start up my MacBook Air, it makes a loud startup sound unless I muted the computer prior to shutting down last time. However, I cannot guarantee that I had muted the computer last time before shut down because I share this Air with others. How do I start up my Mac silently?

Sure.

First, one of the answers is wrong.

Actually, I should probably go.

Second. Just because it taks about the startup sound of a Macbook Air does not make it not a ducplicate

Well, maybe in a few minutes. Which answer?

The one by bmike.
It does not work for Intel Macs, which all recent Macs are.

jtbandesI have some custom text substitutions set up in the Language & Text pane of System Preferences. But in order to activate a substitution, I have to type the shortcut and then press the spacebar. This results in the replacement text followed by a space character. So if I want the text to be at ...

Help! My question was closed as a duplicate, but it wasn't a duplicate: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/46169/…
The answers were the same - that's why.
that's like closing question a:Why won't my Mac start and b:Where's a good piece of recovery software {these are both fake questions} because they both have the same answer.

@MathiasBynens Thanks!
@JavaAndCSharp Dupes are a hard one. Not everyone is in agreement - heck - even the moderators can, do and will continue to have differences of opinion on what is and what isn't a duplicate.
@gentmatt is of the opinion that the when someone asks about a specific piece of hardware and another person asks about a general case the question should still be treated as "exact duplicates"
I have a differing opinion in general on that - but the real question is to look more at the answers.

5:01 PM
@bmike: Hmm. What do you mean by "look at the answers"?

This site optimizes for good answers and keeping things optimal for people that want to provide answers. So when closing something without there being dozens of duplicates is something I as a moderator am generally disinclined to do.

@bmike Yes. Because "this question covers exactly the same ground as earlier questions on this topic".

Yes - once we've had question X asked 5, 10 or more times, the later ones do tend to get closed as dupes without much regard for whether a good answer might be provided if that question stays alive
@gentmatt That is one of many factors that I take into consideration when I as a moderator take action on a question.
As far as general user voting - I say vote your conscience each and every time, but there will be times when moderators get together - chat something over and decide to override.

@bmike I've not been sure about this question, though. I think that you can argue here that this is not an exact duplicate because the 'duplicate' demanded a specific shortcut - which original did not. Therefore, I think it's best to let the democratic voting decide.

Have you read the "canonical" blog post on how strict interpretation of the "covered previous ground" is less of a strict rule and more of a first guideline now that the sites are evolving? @gentmatt

5:06 PM
@bmike I will follow your decisions. :) That's why I did not vote to close for the same question again.
@bmike I'll look into that now.

Here - lemme get the link

@gentmatt: What if there are two questions - completely different. One asks for a way to run XYZ Tiger software and the other asks how to prevent certain processes from starting. It turns out that both of these questions have the same answer: add a text file awesome.txt to your Lion directory.

Jeff Atwood on November 15, 2010

As Stack Overflow grows — or any other Q&A site in the Stack Exchange network, really — there’s a natural pressure to discover and link duplicate questions. The more questions you have, the higher the possibility a given new question isn’t in fact a new question, but a duplicate of an older existing question. Because of this, we’ve continually enhanced the tools for finding, linking, and merging duplicate questions:

Handling Duplicate Questions Linking Duplicate Questions Improved Question Merging …

they both have the same answer, but the questions are different.

@JavaAndCSharp Hang tight a second - we are not even starting to dicsuss yours.
Lemme get @gentmatt issue closed - I will have a look at yours in a sec....

5:09 PM
@bmike: Oh, ok.

@gentmatt I really embrace that article - I also really, really love the democratic process. You all close the heck out of things - we can vote to re-open too as a community. But Adam had a really high scoring answer and migrating answers to an old question is really the worst in my opinion.

@bmike I'm totally fine with the decision you made. We can settle this issue now :)
"What we want is on the order of 4 or 5 similar-but-not-quite-the-same duplicates to cover all possible search terms and common permutations of the question."

If you or someone wants me to delete my answer so I don't get any points - my decision is still the same - I want that question open and have asked the other mods to double check my decision on that. It can take a day or two for everyone to check in on an issue, so do be patient with us when we need a little time to hash out a specific question.
I just wanted to get us (all the closers) and the mods on the same page to discuss whether and how that "strange dupe" article can and should be implemented here.
What made my decision to re-open the question was that the two highly scored answers in the closed question broke new ground.
My answer wasn't on the old question at all (and YES I WAS TOTALLY WRONG about most recent intel macs not heeding the plug) but that's been corrected.

The blogpost suggests that such variations of the same question will appear again and again - especially if we delete them. That's why we should not delete (or close) it. I did not think of this when I voted to close, but I understand now.

@gentmatt Awesome - i really appreciate the dialog here.
@JavaAndCSharp OK - you're up :-)

@bmike Yeah, it's best to talk about these things.

@JavaAndCSharp I had a look at the question of yours - how again is it different than the other one? Which answers to one question don't fit the other?
(Yours was worded much better than the older one - so it needed an edit) I'll look deeper to see if we want to reopen it since even if they are asking the same thing - having different wording within reason can still be good for the site - but that's a higher bar to cross than when it was erroneously closed as a duplicate.

5:49 PM
@bmike: My question has already two not-duplicate votes, BTW. It's different from the other one in that:
- mine asks for a keyboard shortcut
- mine asks for a way to turn off the monitor, not just put it to sleep
- mine asks for a shortcut for any Mac; his has specifically the iMac tag

@bmike been fantastic this last week. Looking dicy for the weekend tho
