Q: Regularization tag

AnixxIt seems, the word regularization has two major meanings: one in statistical analysis, and the other in the context of divergent series. Can we somehow solve this issue?

Q: Determine the generating function for the sequence $a_n = 2^n n^2$

NoviceThis is an exercise in my course notes. Exercise 3.1 : Find the generating function for the sequence $a_{n}=2^{n}n^{2}$. Hint: Look at the solutions to the generating functions $\displaystyle\frac{1}{(1 - 2x)^{k}}$ and the fact that $n^{2}$ can be written in terms of $\displaystyle\binom{n}{2}$,...

The disambiguation page on WP has several links: Regularization. They include Regularization (physics), Regularization (mathematics) and Regularization (solid modeling)
The last one seems to be related to regularization in the sense: Taking the closure of the interior of the given set.
In mathematics, statistics, finance, computer science, particularly in machine learning and inverse problems, regularization is the process of adding information in order to solve an ill-posed problem or to prevent overfitting.Regularization applies to objective functions in ill-posed optimization problems. The regularization term, or penalty, imposes a cost on the optimization function for overfitting the function or to find an optimal solution. == Classification == Empirical learning of classifiers (from a finite data set) is always an underdetermined problem, because it attempts to inf...
@RodrigodeAzevedo Since you have added this tag on several occasions, perhaps you might have some input into the recent post on meta concerning the . It was posted by Anixx: Regularization tag.
Although I suppose that you would see the post even without my notification.

I guess regularization in stats means smoothing out the data points somehow eg moving average? — Calvin Khor 6 hours ago
Currently there are 274 questions tagged regularization, 51 of them are also tagged optimization, 37 of them are also tagged divergent-series. There is also a tag called (summation-method) - which seem like a reasonable tag for regularization of divergent series. — Martin Sleziak 5 hours ago
Tikhonov regularization, named for Andrey Tikhonov, is a method of regularization of ill-posed problems. A special case of Tikhonov regularization, known as ridge regression, is particularly useful to mitigate the problem of multicollinearity in linear regression, which commonly occurs in models with large numbers of parameters. In general, the method provides improved efficiency in parameter estimation problems in exchange for a tolerable amount of bias (see bias–variance tradeoff). In the simplest case, the problem of a near-singular moment matrix (...
