Q: Did Neal Armstrong really tell unfunny jokes about the moon?

james hawsI read posts all over saying that "apparently" he did, and would then reply "ah I guess you had to be there". Did he really do this, or is it something the internet made up?

@MolbOrg or, i could use a rad design i did a year ago for this....
it probably isn't clear there, but the radiator panels are the black things, and the other flat parts are sheets of aluminum that shade them from the sun and the ground all day
because the equatorial site only has to deal with a 3 degree variation in the angle of the sun over the year, it's enough to keep the panels hidden
actually, that hat design is funny, kinda smart
however, if it saves time, why not, because we understand that radiators job is emitting and there are different possible designs and etc based on needs in cooling
and it is engineering thing to come up with best one, and what is best is defined by multiple factors and depends on them.
i have to split it into a bunch of small units to make it fit nicely, and you know, i was looking at that old design, and thinking it would also work
the hat ones i mean.
let me try it... i don't know if i'm too lazy to do the right thing and optimize the hat rads, or too obsessed with detail and refuse to just use an adequate design i made a long time ago.
the one up there doesn't have to turn. that's what makes it better in some situations.

idk, I would slow odwn a pipes porn a notch - espceially if it is hard to do.
Because is is common understanding that there inside should be some system of pipes etc, but it does not have to be visible so much
pipes porn... heheheheh
well, it says something that you realize that the really annoying thing is i have to rearrange a lot of pipes
if i may be grouchy for a minute, how is it that you get that immediately, and other things i'm trying to explain don't get across?
17:17
I get it because you say so and because anything to do in blender is a nightmare for me.
Other things I "resist" some I just may not understand for some reason, some I perceive as wrong, sometimes I'm wrong. However, those aren't things I will argue too much about if not being asked to do so.
Really important things are 2 - which increase your chances for success and which decrease those chances.
And your ability to offer unique perspective could increase those, IMHO.
You have a very solid understanding of value for a virtual colony and can talk about it.
yeah, everything you say i mostly agree with, which it is why it is important for me to understand why some communication is very easy, while others is very hard.
the bridge question does have to wait for now. but partly i am putting it off until after the conference because though you disagree, my opinion on that topic is pretty well developed. enough to get across an interesting idea, then we see how people react.
by the way, i wonder how much your questions about the bridge would be answered if you read the website. i know it's long. i'll start making videos in a while and that may be easier for you (and other people)

18:34
alright, this may now be done
oh wait, no. let me think a little about the tank size.
19:18
ah, the tank is more than large enough. no worries.
19:30
there is a buffer zone around the stone heat store of 3 m, that volume is filled with powder regolith. Around the outside of all that is a radiant barrier. I really don't know how to calculate the heat loss across that barrier, but i'm happy enough just estimating the whole thing, with these properties, generates a nice, round 500 kW day and night

@MolbOrg when you have some time, i'd appreciate being able to talk some about how this power system has ended up

half way trough.
I have no questions, I have answers for 42 ))
I'm the 42 :D
@kimholder is there some reason why mirrors are tilted so much?
@MolbOrg heheheh
@MolbOrg it's near dawn
actually, after that i rotated the radiators to also point the way they should when the sun is in that spot, but that isn't in that picture.
it's an orthographic view - no perspective. that may make it confusing.
there's one with perspective. but there is no ground :P
i'll upload it to the repo. and i'm going to take some time to make versions for the blend4web player
explaining the thing is really not easy
23:33
mirror stands has to be oriented parallel to gravity vector, mirrors normal to sun view vector, and both those are parallel (kinda) at equator

Q: Extra Terrestrials

RussianScientistDo you think there could be extra terrestrials on the Moon? The few meteorites that fell on earth in the last ten years they found tiny life on the meteor. They took a small portion of the meteor called "Nakhla" and viewed under a microscope, they found fractures and tunnels identical to those in...

clockwise from top left - top view, view from southeast, view from east, and view from south
^ that question isn't going to last long...
the pipes that collect the heat run north south between the support towers. The mirrors turn around the pipes. They are balanced with a counterweight.
note a gap has been left on the south end of each mirror, before the stand, so that the way the angle of the sun causes the light to be farther south on the pipe in 'winter' than it is in 'summer' doesn't cause the light to hit anything other than the pipe
(that gap should be longer, and the mirror should have a mechanism that moves it closer and farther from the pipe, slightly, according to the season - but it has been taken into consideration. i'll add that later.)
ok, I guess it is just aesthetics
aesthetics?
i tried to set it up so the work needed to turn the mirrors would be as little as possible
if i'm even understanding you
23:49
I just expected to see that second red line in the green position, if the installation is bonded to equatorial location
*parallel to green line
and the mirrors are pointed up? that would be the way to do it if the mirrors ran east to west
but they run north to south
their axis of rotation is perpendicular to the equator
ok
makes sense
i thought about doing it east to west, but the issue of how the sun moves is much bigger that way
yes, that's better
then it looks ok
