Q: Why is there no letter S in the English word "republic" while the original Latin phrase had an S?

Are anyone here familiar with Nick R. R. Oulton: Common Entrance 13+ Latin Revision Guide, ISBN 978-1398-3519-8-1. I find that buying every one of the different books that the different schools use here in the UK would ruin me, so I was just wondering if there is an overview of which topics are covered by that book somewhere.
