@JoonasIlmavirta Grigori Perelman and Alexander Grothendieck are two mathematicians who come to mind that famously eschewed money.
I get the impression that Grothendieck was the most important mathematician of the 20th century.

I believe you've heard at least some of it, too, even if you don't know it by name.
@ktm5124 Oh yes, and I'd add Pál Erdös to that list. (No simple way to type the Hungarian ö, it seems.) But those people don't represent the community at large when it comes to money and recognition.
@ktm5124 Depends on who you ask. He was certainly very influential, and created new subfields. My work has little to do with his, so I see less value in it.
