@JoonasIlmavirta I don't know who reads this, but fwiw, I do not believe that anyone became hostile. I think it's perfectly fine to say someone got something wrong. I may have disagreed with fdb, but that doesn't mean he wasn't in his right to disagree with me, too.
I think having some sort of "welcome: start here" page would be incredibly helpful, especially in enumerating sources people should consult before asking questions (stuff easily discoverable in Lewish & Short or other free, online resources).
Of course, if they still don't understand, then further elucidation can be given, but it would definitely be useful, and should be a click-magnet in Google searches.
@C.M.Weimer No, not really. Maybe we could create a wiki thing somewhere, but that would be technically separate from the SE system.
@C.M.Weimer I would like some kind of a welcome page as well. The automatic tour is the best we have, and I feel it could be better.
Such a welcome page could be realized as a meta thread. It'd have to have the Q&A form. We'd just have to figure out what the question is and what kinds of answers we want. Or maybe just one answer to tell one coherent story?
We have the resource request questions and a separate meta question for proposing them. We have some nice resource lists, especially the one for dictionaries.
@C.M.Weimer My responses can be delayed whether I'm tagged or not. I sometimes concentrate on life outside this site.
