@Leullame no, every single one of $\sum_{n=2}\log(1+(-1)^n/n)$'s partial sums is nonnegative, so the sum can't be $-\infty$

1:30 AM
Hey all peeps

@Dodsy hi

hi nate

1:56 AM
oh hey guys
sorry my mouse stopped working :D

@Dodsy You hired a mouse? What's it do, scare away annoying guests?

yeah he runs on a treadmill to power my goat
it powers a goat which runs on a moat to power a laptop

@Dodsy wait... you mean that when they said goats eat anything, that included raw electricity?

and emotion, duck.

you must be a robot

2:01 AM
yes.
:)
How have you been
glad to see you around.

@Dodsy just lurking. Still not really supposed to be chatting.
XD

A: Loan Repayment Question From Pre Calculus Test (4 questions witihn)

DodsyRecall that the formula for compound interest is $A = P(1+i)^n$, where: $A$ is the final amount $P$ is the initial amount $i$ is the interest rate (in decimals) $n$ is the time that has elapsed. For question (I): Since the initial amount is $80 000$, $A = 80000(1+0.02)^1$ $A = 81,600...

i mean answer
you'll have to scroll up
literally the most complicated way of doing it that I've ever seen.
still a good answer though

oook

oooooooook

if you won't report me for sneaking back on here I can stay for a while i suppose. I just don't want to get banned for breaking the rules.

2:12 AM
I don't get that whole thing, and I don't want any part of ruining somebodies online presence due to a little bit of chatroom politics.
So, please stay and enjoy yourself.

alrighty
@Dodsy apparently I got in trouble for spamming the word "integral" several times in a row.
I was goofing around
mods said to stay out for a month
anyways

lmfao

what's new?

oh nothing much, I'll hear back next week to see if I got into school.

you better
otherwise say goodbye to your mouse and goat
@Dodsy honestly people at the time were telling me to stop. It went on for about an hour or so. Surprised you didn't notice.
anyways
you said you do programming stuff, right?

2:22 AM
nah I'm terrible at programming

fair enough
I'm just looking for help with this

Q: Is there any way in game maker to pass argument parameters to strings executed via the execute_string() function of version 8.0 (pre-studio)?

TheGreatDuckLast I checked, the game I'm modding was compiled* using Game Maker 8.0 So for a little set up, here is my situation. There's a game out there which has a box in which you can enter a string and it executes it. I decided to try and mod the game through use of this cheat box along with some other...

see, this reads like another language for me. I can't for the life of me focus on it for long enough to learn anything.

2:44 AM
nvmd then
and i wasn't asking for your help at that point
i was just saying why i was asking you

Oh i see

there was no need to take an attitude
:p

lmfao

if I was "taking an attitude" you'd know :)

2:44 AM
fair enough
I can remember a long time ago a guy thought i was intentionally trying to cause trouble on a different site (I was much more introverted when I was younger and so my posts read like the ravings of a wild spambot)
my response was "If I was trying to damage this website you wouldn't be able to use it."
people (humorously) took it to the extremem
I was merely meaning "if I wanted to cause trouble I'd just post 1000 messages in every chat. It's not that hard to annoy people."

Yeah, that makes sense.
I can be insuferable and don't know when to stop to save face.

no like every time I'd go into a thread I'd end up derailing it
cause i didn't know how to stay on topic
(like how nobody in here can stay on topic)

Hmm
Wait nvm

?
Eh, I don't even know why I come here. I don't know as much math as anyone here, and am not benefiting from the exchange of information as much as I would like to. I mostly share anecdotal information about my life and have a few laughs killing the hours I should be doing homework..

frankly, we should never discuss anything but math

2:53 AM
why is that?

i know the mods really got on someone a while back for not staying on point
this chat is JUST for math

You could argue that the sidebar dictates that we are able to speak candidly about whatever we choose. Hence the usage of the term "general discussion"

well someone was actually reported and banned temporarily for discussing chess
and not math

Ah, well, I suppose that is the moderator's prerogative.

4 mods all agreed

2:57 AM
I used to go to chats when I was younger, around 8th grade.

That's way too young to be on the internet
I didn't go on the internet at all until i was 18

I used to animate. And my friends (that I met online) gave me moderator privileges, so naturally I would silence, kick, ban, whatever- people I didn't like.
absolute power corrupts absolutely.

this is why children shouldn't be on the internet... ever ^

It gives people meaning in their lives.
Well, that was 10 years ago now.

you were way too young

3:02 AM
nah

children shouldn't even be allowed to use google
that's my opinion

I've been using the internet since I was 9, maybe even 8
playing diablo 2 and runescape online.

...
those games should be illegal

why?

they waste people's time
they are too popular

3:03 AM
Oh, well that doesn't really make sense does it?
Hey @BalarkaSen

Hi.

@Dodsy people need to devote themselves fully to math and avoid all other things for they are but distractions.
@BalarkaSen sup?

hi @BalarkaSen

People will find meaning in their lives, whether they end up a school teacher, a nascar driver, or a night manager at a casino.
Money rules most peoples lives. They have no interest in higher learning, only higher earnings.

@Dodsy true, but video games are nothing more than a distraction.

3:05 AM
Or, they won't.

One could argue that video games could bring somebody a great deal of monetary value, whether they be a developer of video games (yourself) or a player of video games. One can always find a way to turn a hobby into a job.

@Dodsy but they do not serve to further humanity's progression

What's the point of progressing humanity if you won't live beyond 80 some odd years before croaking?
You want a legacy?

I find it harder believe sincerely in the progress of humanity these days.

not what i am saying

3:09 AM
You have a better chance of becoming president of the united states than ever submitting math important enough to immortalize you.

I am saying that the only thing important is furthering the knowledge of the world
period
everything else is just a distraction
one must become obsessed with work.
otherwise nothing has purpose

Eh, I tend to disagree.

meh i don't believe in knowledge

Nothing has purpose to begin with.

@TheGreatDuck I dislike that attitude, if only because it's so easily abused.

3:10 AM
@Semiclassical mine?

I believe that if you set forth to do anything, then you must let it consume you to the point that you do it absolutely perfectly
or fail trying

Okay, but how about comfort?
How about enjoying warm summer days

laziness is evil

I love math, but I do it for maths sake. Not to progress the knowledge of the world.

don't tempt me

3:11 AM
also, what a crap discussion

Yeah

Though I think I can give a good quote for the attitude you're proposing

@Dodsy I do it for math's sake as well. That's what I mean. But only math is truly important so everything else must be abandoned.

Hai

Hey amin.

3:12 AM
Francois Sagon — "I have loved to the point of madness; that which is called madness, that which to me, is the only sensible way to love."

@TheGreatDuck Math is not the most important thing in the world.

"If you are to do it, do it to the glory of the Lord" <= technically not applicable to everyone but in general I consider that to mean overwhelming and obsessive devotion to the task.

I appreciate your dedication, but it comes across as being overly desperate for some persona you saw in the movie "The Imitation Game".

not trying to at all spawn a religious debate. It's just a quote.

3:13 AM
@Duck To say it perhaps bluntly, I don't believe that people live their lives for others, they do it for themselves

I think the more defensible stance is not "everyone should be obsessed with math" but "everyone should be obsessed with -something- which contributes to knowledge"

@Daminark i don't do math for the purpose of others. I do math for the sake of math and because when i see a problem I simply cannot rest until I in some way either resolve it, or in some way show that it is literally unsolvable.

@Semiclassical I was nodding until you said "which contributes to knowledge"

@Semiclassical that is what i meant. Or at least something truly productive.

If my son wanted to be an electrician, he can go for it
if he wants to do ballet, good on him

3:15 AM
of course

Eh, I was trying to capture what Duck was saying :)

errr

Well, someone will find a video game and simply cannot rest until he in some way either beats it, or in some way finds that it is literally unwinnable

he doesn't have to progress knowledge.

Not so much what I believe in either.

3:15 AM
@Daminark and that is why by design they exist only to deter and distract. :-)

Passion is important, i think we can all agree on that.

What I find troubling with 'work on what you love/are obsessed with' is that it's so readily exploited.

passion is just liking something. Obsession is when you cannot live without it.

Yeah.
?
uhhhh
okay duck.

Terminology.

3:16 AM
I exaggerated.

Distract from what? And whatever your answer to that is, why ought they be required to take preference over other endeavors?

XD
I don't know anymore.

I did say this was a garbage discussion.

Diablo is rock solid.

I'm fine with people falling in love with some topic. I'm just troubled by the economic subtext of it as 'work.'

3:17 AM
@Dodsy until you melt it, in which case it ceases to be rock solid

and somehow I ended up letting a part of myself I try to keep buried. Let's just forget this happened.
I can get somewhat... negative about things.

Yeah, probably a good idea

I say this as a grad student who is quite cynical now about grad school and academia, it should be said.

@Dodsy I don't like those kinds of games. As in, I just don't like that gameplay. Not my cup of tea.
@Semiclassical i wasn't thinking of the economic subtext. I was basically trying to make up a ridiculous argument for everyone basically being enslaved to science and never doing anything else.

3:19 AM
i went a tad bit overboard.

I am not mature enough to not giggle at the second-to-last sentence

and now I appreciate the times when I draw a face.
haha I knew i'd getcha!

I like to try and solve things that haven't been solved but honestly I'd probably write a proof and then shove it into a directory on my pc. I'm not concerned about other people's benefit or monetary gain. I only wish to solve certain problems for the sake of solving them.

Yeah, that's my attitude as well.

honestly I assume the Riemann Hypothesis is false for starters.

3:22 AM
Which is part of why I don't want to stay in academia.
I like the problems I work on, usually, and getting out a good paper is neat

I have to admit I'm pretty selfish, if I figure something out I'll make sure everyone knows how smart I am while I'm accepting a prize.

but I'm not motivated by publication or by having a neat title
tbh the problems I do on MSE can be pretty durn satisfying themselves

That's why I'm going primarily into Computer Science. Math is also another thing I'm studying but I think of it as a useful tool and not useful completely by itself for its own sake and most of the unresolved things are so obscure that they are largely useless for practical things.

as can figuring out a good way to explain a concept / problem

@Semiclassical I don't really enjoy answering questions on here. I just enjoy sitting and thinking about things and how I might do them in the general sense.
:p

3:25 AM
To be sure, it depends on the problem.

There's a reason I've only answered roughly 30 questions.
I really hate answering questions. XD

Why?
the irony! it burns!!!

to be fair though, that's more of a recent feeling.
@Daminark cause I've already been answering questions here. I don't feel like doing it anymore.

@Dodsy make up your mind

3:27 AM
@Duck I was mostly doing asking for the irony

There's a few different kinds of answers, of course.

i'm probably just bored of the site is what it is.

It's a bit silly, but some of my favorite answers are short one-line hints.

I cannot stand to write answers that are not full and complete. So... answers for me tend to take a while.
and are probably longer than the asker wanted. XD

Mainly because of the challenge in making a hint which is as economical as possible.
I like hints that give the person just the right little push.

3:29 AM
I don't like trivial questions though.

In my case, I do like hints a good deal, part of the trick is overcoming the very deeply-rooted instinct to just answer outright

I want to actually try and answer a question I don't already know how to solve.
the challenge is in solving it anyways.

The other thing is that I'm sometimes too lazy to want to fill in all the details :P

I feel like not proving every answer rigorously is just going to get banned.
so I tend to avoid things that trivial

I doubt it.

3:31 AM
besides, they'll get deleted anyways
so why bother?

...yeah, the deletion thing is really bloody annoying.

I know
half of my questions got deleted almost overnight

At least when it's a question you thought was interesting.

and the other half were almost all marked as duplicates of each other
or irrelevant posts

I mean, if it's a question which is obviously trash, then spending the time to put together a good answer does seem like a sucker's game.

3:32 AM
so at that point I lost interest in asking questions as well
@Semiclassical I had very unique questions. They are no longer around, which is probably a good thing.

I don't tend to ask a lot of questions, and not all of the ones I've asked have been answered. That's always frustrating.

well mine almost always get deleted

I'm not sure all of my questions actually had good answers, though :P

shrugs

I've not run into that myself. Dunno what the difference is.

3:34 AM
It's called one needs to avoid the temptation to press the close button
"what goes around comes around"

lol
I tend to hammer on the close button when I see something with absolutely nothing in the way of an attempt

I don't even have enough rep to cast close votes on posts that aren't mine. :p

"Here's my question can you help me kthx bai"

I said half my posts got deleted. I didn't say they were worth keeping around.
unanswered queue needs to stay unclogged.

well, I tend to leave mine up even if they don't get answered. mostly that's laziness, though.
I haven't looked at my older questions in ages.

3:37 AM
A lot of people have asked the question of why around 50 questions were in the review queues almost daily during last december.
It's called i got a trigger finger.
XD

@TheGreatDuck Well, it's a supply issue as well.

O_O

Though what really annoys me, speaking as a 10k user, is the overuse of the spam flag in chat
7

almost all of the flags I see are for things that really are not worth any attention at all.
not that it wasn't happening before I reached 10k, but now I get a little ping from it
so now the overuse of it is quite visible to me

3:41 AM
that sucks
dont do that

it's not bad, really, just annoying

@TheGreatDuck ok.
There are things of reality that we can not yet express as mathematical equations.

well, we can describe them with math, but not necessarily get all the information we want out of them
that said, its absurd that something as commonplace as dumping a bucket of water down the sink generates an unsolved problem

I find 'color' a good instance of a phenomena which, on one hand, we understand very well mathematically and physically, including how our brains experience it

@Araske Depends on the shape of the sink.

3:50 AM
and on the other, that math doesn't capture the actual experience of seeing a rainbow.
it can't, because that's not what it's intended to do.

cough AI cough

let's not go into Turing test / Chinese room stuff

im not

good :)

I'm saying a sophisticated AI can experience a rainbow.
da heck are you talking about?

3:53 AM
@ArtEze I suppose I have you to thank for that ban?

@TheGreatDuck or perhaps you?

The Chinese room argument holds that a program cannot give a computer a "mind", "understanding" or "consciousness", regardless of how intelligently or human-like the program may make the computer behave. The argument was first presented by philosopher John Searle in his paper, "Minds, Brains, and Programs", published in Behavioral and Brain Sciences in 1980. It has been widely discussed in the years since. The centerpiece of the argument is a thought experiment known as the Chinese room. The argument is directed against the philosophical positions of functionalism and computationalism, which hold...

I had a wonderful half an hour alone, regardless

@Dodsy no. What for?

3:54 AM
Oh is that why you kept bouncing on and off the room?

I don't appreciate being lied to.
Yes.

dude

for the thing I giggled at, I'm guessing. (For the record, I saw the flag and marked it as invalid.)

im not lying

@Dodsy Which?

3:55 AM
Ah no worries ArtEze.

As I have the last few ones that just came up because seriously people

Yes.

@Dodsy They have been other moderators.

@Duck is there a difference between "oh look colors arranged in a way" and the experiencing a rainbow
Or, I think more accurately, is there anything to "contemplating this art" that isn't just pattern matching on the literal concrete data that is the art

That's quite alright.

3:57 AM
One thing that's worth keeping in mind is that the spam/offensive flag isn't just shown to users in this room
It pings 10k users who are in any of the SE chatrooms
(I think?)

@Semiclassical yes

I don't mind being banned if what I said was actually offensive or inappropriate
but I was talking about art.

Yeah. So if a message gets flagged here then it's likely that a mod from somewhere else will stop by to see the context

Obviously I offended somebody in this room. So I'll give them this message- grow up. I'm off for tonight.

@Dodsy You typed an inappropriate word. t i....

4:02 AM
Should I have said breast?

I'm tired of this conversation in any case. I'm out.

@Dodsy Maybe.

How about the video you posted which referenced drugs and used the word "shit" in the title

@Dodsy Surely already erased it.
I was wrong.

Have you ever been on this chat before? I don't think I've ever seen you here before.

4:18 AM
Apparently he's a guy from the Spanish programming chat

@ArtEze fight me irl bro.
@AkivaWeinberger Sí, soy del sitio en español, pero estoy usando Google Traductor.

Ah, okei
¿Cómo estás?

@AkivaWeinberger Bien, mirando videos de Youtube.

@AkivaWeinberger De cumbia.

Google dice que es un tipo de baile

¿Quieres escuchar una canción en hebreo?

@AkivaWeinberger Thanks, I'll look at it later.

«Hijo de papá» en español, pienso

@AkivaWeinberger Sí.

4:47 AM
I think I get why simple groups are called simple

Any homomorphism from it is either trivial or an embedding

Huh, true

Huh, cool
