The first half of the connections are done -- at least for a first-draft layout, but really once a first draft is finished and working, why would anyone go back and rebuild it all? It requires an improbable streak of masochism to try this kind of thing even once:

It's not entirely clear yet that there will be room for the other half of the circuitry and any decent metapixel area. But there's still some space left, and even a small metapixel area will be pretty visible at moderate zoom levels.
